I was a bit leery about the piece with how it opened, but it settled down into something with good perspective soon after, so it made the cut.
I hate to say that Trump is really just a catalyst and is making visible things that will were there, but were at least being suppressed or obliquely hinted at, but, well, provincial upbringing points out pretty fast to me that there's nothing new that Trump is saying, just that he, and many others, feel like the climate is right for them to be able to be open about those things and not suffer social consequences. It appears they're right.
What I find interesting about the matter of inessential weirdness is that it is pretty exclusively defined by the recipients of the overture - to succeed, you have to understand pretty well who you're talking to. For some groups, I suspect that may be too much like admitting "those people" are right.
