Ah, finally.
Oct. 7th, 2005 10:59 pmSorry, had a hiccup in my internet service. It's good that there's a computing site a few blocks up, or I'd be really cheesed. Or really behind, one of the two.
Art is not dead yet - however, it appears that some people still can't take a joke. ("That's not a joke." "It is if you see what happened to her because of it.") Truth be told, those, these are the peons. Most of the people who think they have clout are too busy drawing Armageddon from the evening news. Although every now and then, they stop and rant about how they're an "oppressed majority" that has to fight the will of the liberal elitists in power or pulling the strings. Thus, we create situations like The 23rd Qualm of Bush. It also creates statements like "Every black baby should be aborted", spoken by a former Secretary of Education.
Reality has not only become subjective, it is being actively displayed in primetime format. Now, I'll admit, there are days where I talk to the "studio audience" in jest, usually when nobody's around, and think of myself as potentially existing in someone's sadistic idea of a reality television show. Or sitcom. I don't get enough really strange things to think I'm on a sci-fi show. Which is a bit of a shame, sometimes. But I don't like the idea, true as it appears to be, that television and the mass media are defining reality. If the whole of "reality" can be reduced to sound bites, newscasts, and the material that passes for entertainment, then we're becoming a very unreal society. Some of my readings for course talked about control as being greatly assisted by technology. Although they were mostly focusing on management systems and the rise of the national (and eventually multinational) corporation, it can easily find contemporaries in the mass media and the ways that politicians also use those technologies and controls to effect their ends. I am a product of the system, yes, but does my awareness of the system mean I am somewhat free of it, or am I merely a person who understands Newspeak rather than just saying it? I don't know.
Gendered robots. Is that what we're becoming? If that's true, though, then why doesn't someone return a "DOES_NOT_COMPUTE" error on Ten plots, two of which are said, and one an arrest?
Although they might have as much trouble with these gems - Chess-boxing, Pythons taking on too much, and King George. Wait, scratch that last one. (Thanks,
2dlife. He's also linked up the Spam Stock Tracker, to see just how much you really would win if you invested in them.)
