I needed to get out of the house today, apparently, and when [livejournal.com profile] madkingludwig put together a shindig since he was in town, I tagged along and met some of his cohort. A fun bunch, all of them. The socializing did me good, and I feel a little more energized and level. Also, [livejournal.com profile] getsource and [livejournal.com profile] eleme stopped by the library today while I was working. It was nice to see them both.

This weekend's off, so nothing to do but kick back and relax.

Requires Flash, unfortunately, but there is a gentleman who "paints" pictures using the dust on his rear window. Good stuff, too, and in a properly impermanent medium so that he can continue to do work. He's also done the obligatory "dogs playing poker" bit. (Apparently, the piece is called "A Friend in Need".)

No idea what the officer's actually doing or having done, but it'll get him suspended just the same. Favors for reducing traffic tickets? Or perhaps for looking the other way on a different charge? Or did the guy's wife decide to surprise him on duty and they got caught... the world may never know.

Jerry Falwell is a warmaker. Jerry Falwell thinks that YHWH blesses the war in Iraq, and other wars fought. I just wish that I could believe that he believes what he says there - first to be a people of peace, then only to fight just wars when they are necessary. He says "Thou shalt not murder", yet believes that fighting a war started under pretenses that were likely false when started and have since been confirmed to be false is not murdering. He believes that killing people based on their belief system, because some of its members turn out to be homicidal, is justified. (At least, I think he still does. If that's changed, let me know). Coming from him, phrases about the need to be peaceful ring hollow, and it's sad.

Speaking of good Christian values, The Slacktivist pointed out the Prairie Muffin Manifesto. Draw forth your own opinions on the matter. I find it considerably rooted in things that never were, striving for ideals that may not be effective, and potentially victimizing (in the hands of the wrong husband). But if someone wishes to live a "quiet life, diligently pursuing our biblical role as women and protecting the innocence of our children", then they are welcome to do so. I hope they go in with open eyes about what it entails and they continue to self-evaluate as to whether it is the right path for them.

Anyway, what the Slacktivist was up to saying was that people who practice this and other fundamentalist forms (of anything, really) are not likely to be reasoned with at all. He points out the connections of terminology, like the one between "submitting to one's husband" and the role of the "submissive" in the BDSM stage. He points out, though, that there's a fundamental incompatibility between the people trying to do the convincing and the people resisting that convincing.

That's what has appeared so far. There will be more tomorrow. Although I think I'll enjoy being able to sleep in, even if it doesn't happen.
