Got wrapped up in Final Fantasy XII - and basically just inched a little bit along the story, chasing down the occasional mark and trying to grind a bit - it’s actually pretty tough to grind levels in that game. It requires a lot of work and coordination, in addition to the enemy count staying small at all times. It’s tough stuff. And I doubt that I’ve even gotten a fraction of the way through. I suspect this is going to be a game that entices with the sidequests and the like. Which might mean at some point I decide to finish the game to see what the end is like and then go back and do sidequests at my leisure. Or something.
Anyway, forward to link-type things. After a short commentary about mosquitoes, that is. Late-night posts such as these may soon be brought to you by caffeinated donuts. As I don’t drink coffee, however, double-dosing is not something on my horizon.
jokermage has the transcript of Loving, Mildred, about loving. (The original is in PDF form at http://www.freedomtomarry.org/images/pdfs/mildred_loving-statement.pdf) It’s an account of a man and wife arrested in Virginia for having married “the wrong kind of person” in Washington D.C., where inter-racial marriage was permitted. I find it an interesting thought - perhaps this could be used as precedent in getting the federal government to ensure that all states recognize a civil union/marriage relationship for all persons, regardless of orientation? (Not a lawyer, obviously, but the language quoted there does seem like it could be put to that purpose.) Going about this route would not likely produce much for good will from the people and the legislators, but it could at least get the ball rolling.
The Senator from Tennessee, Mr. Fred Thompson, believes that Roe v. Wade is the most harmful decision in the history of the Supreme Court. If I recall correctly, this person also is trying to run for the Presidential office. With positions like these, I’d like to believe he’d be laughed right out of the primaries, but with the way things are now, I can’t be sure. Still, statements like these can’t hope to get him enough approval, can they? The Southern Baptist Convention is still caliming that adding sexual orientation to the hate-crime list creates a "special protected class" that shouldn't be, though, and Pat Robertson continues to rail at Islam as a conquering movement disguised as a religion, while blithely ignoring his own faith's stated domination goals, so maybe this is par for the course these days.
Peggy Noonan believes that the solution to "immigration" is to work on the people who are already here, getting them patriated and acclimated, rather than continuously letting in new waves of people who will work for less than the last wave. I’m not sure I agree with the idea that closing the borders, even fora short time, it the right idea, but I do think she hits it squarely on the head when she says “we don’t trust our bureaucrats to let in the people America needs. We don’t trust our bureaucrats and leaders to care a lot about America.” And she’s also right that threatening to do nothing unless things go just so is also bad behavior (although that’s been the general tone of this Administration, it looks like, and even in cases where people hold fast and say no, they go and do it anyway). There’s got to be some way to work this out that does keep the people America needs. Which very well could be all of them.
Austin Cline at Jesus’ General wants you to think for a moment before advocating revolution. An important question to ask when considering revoultion is "What kind do you want?" Figuring out the end result helps in deciding on the means to that end.If you’re the Democrats, this apparently means making many promises to try much harder, honest. With their approval ratings tanking, this time they will have to do something to convince people they’re serious. Something I find unlikely, really.
The New York Times has found more evidence that men are going through body issues in their teenage years as well with an article about what young men are trying to do to get rid of "man-boobs", including cosmetic surgeries. The article makes mention that most of the causes of man-boobs go away naturally or don’t need something like cosmetic surgery to fix. I know how it can be profoundly shameful, though, for those who have to live up to Ah-nold kinds of body-image saturation.
More signs that the human race is causing ripples in the ecological systems - 20 species of United States birds are in decline, thanks to invasive species and humans taking over the preferred habitats.
