Up top, Dead Pool get Les Paul. Guitars will never be the same.

Okee-dokee. Here’s the domestic thing. It’s health care again. There’s lots of stunning examples of really strange, stupid, and duplicitous behavior here - a few months ago, Newt Gingrich was in favor of Advance Directives. Now, he's spreading the lie that government care is a plot to kill old people. And Newt knows it’s working People are buying the lie, despite having government-run health care. Hopefully, now that Hawking himself has cleared up the lie about the NHS, that particular specter can be laid to rest permanently. And if you’re going to turn and point to Canada, have an account of someone who had an unexpected encounter with the Canadian NHS while at WorldCon. He left having had good treatment and a single bill.

Truth be told, Musings and Migraine’s Professor has it right - if the answer to the question of "Can anyone see a medical professional or get treatment when they need to, near wherever they are, and not have worries about the cost of the matter?" is no, then real health care reform has not happened. That there has to be lots of slogging through the truly irrelevant and false just to get somewhere near asking whether or not the proposed bill will be effective is a black mark on what passes for debate in this country.

This doesn’t mean we can take our eyes off other things, including keeping an eye on allegations that the current administration is still torturing, but not doing so at secret black-ops sites in other countries.

Also deserving a very baleful eye is the hotel company claiming that they are not responsible for a rape that happened in their parking garage because the victim failed to do all she could to prevent it from happening. I think the Unabashed Feminism Department has words, cluebats, and brass knuckles to have with the hotel management making the claim. Rape is something that assailants do. To blame the victim or say they invited it is continuing the idea that rape is something that happens to people, and that they can control it by always being societally approved. Elsewhere and around, failing to give up encryption keys has resulted in jail sentences for two residents of the UK - ipe.

The host of a Brazillian anti-crime show has been charged with murder, after police were curious how his cameras could beat them to the scene of the crime.

Back in the United States, a judge has handed out sentences involving public humiliation in lieu of jail time. It’s not the stocks, but it is holding a sign saying you ran from the police while dressed in a track outfit somewhere where people will see you. No idea if that counts under the “unusual” part or not. The General has some additional suggestions for those choosing humiliation.

Richard Cheney has some sharper words for his boss than he did while the two were still in office. Apparently, the last administrator disappointed Mr. Cheney by not sticking to his idealism through the polls. Well, Cheney is certainly trying to stick to his all the way through.

In tech, NASA warns us they can't necessarily see the asteroid that might potentially wipe us out, Microsoft loses a suit from a company that claims to have patented the technology underlying some of the latest Office versions, the kind that take your complex documents and make them into databases for simplicity and ease, and some results back for a new telescope array.

Last for tonight, even in old science fiction, women were the justification for war, because the aliens always came to steal the women.

And on a more personal note, the fact that it takes the entirety of Act III, which is more than an hour, for Siegfried to finally kiss [REDACTED] is irritating. We’re sincerely hoping there are no other scenes like this in Gotterdammerung.
