Your post-election rundown, from my perch.
Nov. 3rd, 2010 01:27 amOkay, here's the aftermath rundown. All statements about winning or losing are according to projections unless the opponent has conceded or all the ballots are actually in and counted.
That's the basic storyline so far - as unresolved issues get resolved, the picture will be that much clearer. But for now, I suggest everyone re-read the Promise to America and re-visit those spots in the campaigns of the winners when they said or did things that set them apart from the mainstream, because those spots are where the scorekeeping begins in January. As well as the campaigns of those politicians who will be fighting for election or re-election in 2012. Buckle in, kids, the Tea Party is here for another two years, and the Republicans will fly their kites right along side them.
- A Legislative House Divided. According to projections, the Republicans will take a solid majority in the House of Representatives, and will stand a knife's-edge away from having the Senate as well. This gives the Republicans carte blanche to enact the agenda they have been promising, and that they spelled out (as much as they wanted to) in the Promise to America - roll back as much of the previous two years as possible, and subpoenaing and investigating as much as they can on any charge they can find against the administration. Expect gridlock of the sort you would find in a Doctor Who episode. The gains also gives Michelle Bachmann and her Tea Party caucus free reign to do as they please with their Congressional power. Tempering that, though...
- The Tea Party flops.... Rather than being the powerful force that sweeps away everyone in their path, several Tea Party darlings don't make it past the post in their Senate bids. For example:
- Junior Anti-Sex League Candidate, Satanic Panic Candidate, and First Amendment Literalist Christine O'Donnell is defeated in Delaware. So it's not some sort of Tea Party Sweep, and one can be reassured that there is still some sanity left in the country somewhere and/or there is such a thing as being too far out there for the electorate.
- Anti-Latino race-and-immigrant-baiter and Southern Strategy enthusiast Sharron Angle is narrowly defeated in Nevada. In a race that was much closer than it should have been, based on Sharron Angle's bid on the White strength of her hand, Harry Reid holds on to his seat - although his Majority leader status will be precarious, assuming projections hold true.
- The Write-Ins Win in Alaska. Although that doesn't mean necessarily that Lisa Murkowski wins, according to the percentages, the total write-in vote exceeds the vote of either the Tea Partier or the Democrat. We'll have to see how that one shakes out.
- Meg Whitman, Tom Tancredo, and Carl Paladino all fall short in their governor bids, so no worries about a literacy test coming back to haunt you, nor do you have to worry about your governor filling your inbox with bestiality, porn, and racist jokes.
- ...except where it doesn't. There are enough Tea Partiers that do win, however, to ensure that they will still be able to continually pull the Republican party further over to their side and to continue the blockade strategy. For example...
- Marco Rubio wins in Florida. Expect bills coming through to be challenged on their constitutional authority, and count one more into the "stop the gay people from marrying forever!" and "no abortions, ever!" camps.
- Rand Paul wins in Kentucky. Having spoken a lot about his libertarian leanings, we expect him to be a most interesting proposer of legislation - will he actually go for repealing the 14th Amendment provisions that apply to private businesses? What else can we expect from the Son of Paul?
- Jan Brewer is re-elected handily. So you can still expect to be stopped and asked for your citizenship papers in Arizona if you happen to look brown and a police officer can manufacture a sufficient cover excuse.
- Proposition 19 in California goes up in smoke. So no legal weed in that state - not that it would have impacted the federal government one whit - they'd still keep raiding and conducting the War On [Some] Drugs whether it was legal in the state or not
