silveradept: A cartoon-stylized picture of Gamera, the giant turtle, in a fighting pose, with Japanese characters. (Gamera!)
Good morning, and welcome to another edition. We begin today by reminding you that your historical heroes are almost always hagiographically constructed when you first learn about them. The phrase "Bully!" takes on a completely new meaning when you find that Theodore Roosevelt was an ardent supporter of eugenics.

We also have The writing of one Mr. Scott Adams, creator of the Dilbert comic strip, claiming that women asking for equal pay and treatment is on the same level as children asking to eat candy for dinner, and that both are unimportant issues that aren't worth seriously engaging with if you're a man. Men, apparently, don't care about all that much, and save their energy for those things which they do care about and actually feel like they have a chance at winning. Plus, all men want men on their team isntinctively, because they know that dudes will have their back, where women, well, you never know whether those bitches are on your side. Worst of all, he says tha tmen have their problems, and are just expected to suck it up, so men, suck it up and don't try to change anything. Stop caring, whatever injustice it might be, because most of the time, if you try to change things, you're just wasting your energy. As the postscript, a person posting under his name basically said "Hey, bitches, that post was meant for men because we dudes understand what I'm talking about. If you took offense to it, it's because you're too emotional and whiny to get the message."

25 March is also an anniversary that should be remembered by all. One Hundred Years Ago, today, the Triangle Shirtwaist factory caught fire, killing 146 people, men and women, often by jumping out of the windows to the concrete below to try avoid death by incineration from the fire. New York is holding a memorial, which hopefully will include a reading of the names of all those killed in the fire, those who were locked into the factory with no means of escaping, because their employers thought they would ditch work if they weren't.

Today, Wisconsin's Republicans claim that their "budget-repair bill" that strips collective barganing rights take full effect because the text of the bill was published in the Legislative Reference Bureau's website, despite the judge's order against the bill and the fact that it has not been published in the Wisconsin State Journal, the official newpaper of record for the state. Apparently, not even the almost guaranteed threat of recall for Republican state Senators in Wisconsin is going to stop them from their tasks. They have suggested false flag operations to be taken against workers so as to turn opinion against them and make it easier, among many other conspiracies between Corporations and their Elected Lackeys, even as they accuse workers and those who represent them of doing the same thing. And then, when people expose the workings behind the Corporate Lackeys, and point out how much this damages the process and their own party's history and tradition, they don't hesitate to use FOIA requests and an open records log to request the personal e-mail of the writer, because he happens to work for a public university, looking for anything they can use to discredit or otherwise impugn the character of the writer.

There are still adjustments being made. For example, some groups are providing child care so that mothers can participate more fully in social justice and activism.

Finally, the Dead Pool continues to require veterans of the screen, the theater, and some writers for their next production. Ms. Diana Wynne Jones, well-known and well-loved fantasy author, went to the Dead Pool Literary Society at 76 years of age. As was r. Lanford Wilson, playwright, at 73 years.

The Pool also claimed Garaldine Ferraro, the first female to be chosen for a vice presidential nomination by one of the Democrats or Republicans, at 75 years of age.

Ms. Taylor, recently deceased, is reported to have left much of her fortune to various charities doing work with AIDS.

Out in the world today, migrant workers are not faring well in the war zones in Bahrain and Libya. In Libya, the rebels re-took an oil town after sieging it for more than a week.

Elsewhere in the world, have part one of women in leadership positions doing good in their countries and part two of women in leadership positions doing good things in their countries.

The levels of radioactive material released from the Fukushima reactors is nearing the levels released from the Chernobyl accident. Although, with the Fukushima plant, it's not been released all at once, so the danger may not be quite as bad.

Yemen's leader suggests that he'll step down if he feels the government will go to "safe hands", as protesters demand he step down anyway. In Syria, members of the military opened fire on protesters as they clashed with pro-government demonstrators after raiding the rallies that happened before dawn and arresting many people.

Amnesty International is asking for investigations that women protesters were demeaned and required to take "virginity tests" from the army that was suppsoed to be enforcing the peace.

A vote of no confidence in the Harper government triggers elections in Canada, after the Parliament votes that the government has held them in contempt.

An anti cuts-in-spending protest also produced violent demonstrations against police and tax-dodging corporations, which is headlined as "ANRACHISTS ATTACK!" because The Mail wants to make sure nobody actually beleives those people might have a point.

Finally, in the wake of the shooting of Air Force personnel at a German airport, United States troops are told not to wear their uniforms when off the military base, so as to deny the possibility of another attack.

Domestically, a mistaken alert sent out to thousands of phones indicated there was a shooter at a University of Illinois campus. The system is undergoing revision to make sure that the mistake doesn't happen again.

After a long time in the courts, the Catholic Church is paying quite a bit to Alaskan families in a settlement over priest abuse scandals. The complaint originally alleged pedophile priests were being sent to remote villages in Alaska as a way of getting them out of the limelight, and that those villages suffered greatly as a result.

When asked about an operation that let guns come in from Mexico to be tracked instead of arresting the smugglers, the President of the United States said the President of Mexico wasn't informed because he didn't know it had been authorized.

New federal government regulations expand the definition of a disability that requires workplace accomodations, bringing things like diabetes and epilepsy into the fold of disabilities.

The Census Bureau reports more than 50 million persons of Hispanic origin in the United States, according to the Census conducted in 2010. How long before the columnists start fluttering their wings and squawking about how the White People are bing overrun by the Darkies and will destroy the country in doing so?

The Department of Veterans' Affairs is overworked, understaffed, and is not getting good communication from the Pentagon so that they can serve their people well. Plenty of money to drop bombs, not enough to take care of those people who have been in combat. Priorities seem a bit off, don't you think?

The current administration continues to emulate the previous one, now appointing someone who has worked in the worst of the previous administration's abuses to a unit on the well-being of the military family.

The person behind the Creation Museum has been banned from a homeschooler's convention after remarks he made against one of the other speakers' beliefs that Adam and Eve might have been a metaphorical story instead of a literal one.

Finally, Vermont's state House passed a single-payer health care bill. It now heads to the Senate, where it may be modified before moving onward.

In technology and the sciences, before you pass your phone off to anyone else, make sure that you wipe it clean and delete all your personal data from the phone.

If you want to buy into Amazon's App Store for your Android phone, recognize that doing so lowers your security because it requires you to accept content from unknown sources.

Rome Labs created a supercomputer by putting together more than 1,700 PlayStation 3 consoles and getting them to work in concert.

Finally, a cache of artifacts discovered in Texas indicates that there were humans in North American before he earliest known humans in North America. Archaeology strikes again!

In opinions, Mr. Shankman complains that Rebecca Black became popular without having talent, and that our culture of rewarding mediocrity, instead of turning up our noses at it, is to blame. Cane shaking and "Git off mah lawn" optional, apparently. We've been bitching about no-talent hacks for longer than there's been some way of preserving our bitching about no-talent hacks. Because there's money to be made from turning no-talent hacks into brightly burning stars that flare out quickly.

The continued ignorance of the American people about their own political situations not only means they're unable to come up with rational solutions to problems, but they keep electing politicians that pander to their ignorance. The potential bright spot is that if you give them the right useful information, they can make rational decisions about things. And then, maybe, they can try planning audacious projects for the future.

Let's have an example. Mr. Horowitz claims Mr. Sullivan is slandering him because Everyone Knows that the rebellions in the Middle East are going to institute Islamic theorcracies that will flock to al-Qaeda. He then goes on to insinuate that Mr. Sullivan is okat with justifications tha Hitler would use to invade others. Actual information? Close to zero.

Actually, we have a much clearer example of a column that does a lot to provide smoke and misinformation and not be helpful. Mr. Solway returns to the "empty suit" argument and portrays Mr. Obama as a creation of media reality, an idol, who has now proven himself inept and unable to decide anything of importance, following the poltiical wind, and never being present in person when things demand personal attention. He accuses the President of being a construction of George Soros, Bill Ayers, and all sorts of other people who has no identity of his own. I'm guessing that lets him feel smug and secure that he's seen through the facade...and thus, the Fighting Keyboarder rests on his laurels, assuming everyone else will see the same and do something about it. Making an argument that was made when Barack Obama was a candidate. No new information, no solutions, no nothing.

In a much better manner, Ms. Noonan lays out a case as to why Mr. Obama needs to make a formal address about why there are United States troops in Libya and what he sees as the way forward from here. She's much clearer in asking the right questions and laying out her case.

Last out of opinions, Ms, Lopez pins the blame of increased STIs and teen promiscuity solely on parents who aren't opposing the way that fashion likes shorter skirts and deeper necklines. Oh, and feminism, which she confuses with sex-positivity. It's a familiar refrain, like we've heard this throughout time.

Last for tonight, another of those odd things where someone posts an entry and people nominate people they like and say good things about them, what might be the next cursed theater production - the Anthroarachnid musical claims another victim, and a comic about creativity and the need to say "Fuck it! I'm going to draw/paint/write/whatever, whether it's good or bad, because I enjoy doing it, and I'll piss on the ashes of anyone who says I shouldn't after I burn their house down with them inside!" So the next time I lament about being a no-talent hack, remind me of this?
