Greetings, everyone...have an anecdote of Fox News anchors questioning whether the gymnastics uniform for the USA women is insufficiently patriotic by not being red, white, and blue. (In actual sport news, Alex Morgan puts a header past Erin McLeod in stoppage time of Extra Time to win their semi-final against Canada, 4-3, making a hat trick from the Canadian captain ultimately not enough. The extra time, though, only came after a controversial call led to another controversial call that allowed Abby Wambach to score equalizer number 3 from the penalty spot.)
There are things that just keep coming through. Related, again, to Chick-fil-A, recall that calling for the mean between Black and White often results in a lot of harm to everyone.
And speaking of Black and White, remember that book that claimed to be a story about White girls who have to live in a Black world? Yeah, it's worse than you thought. And that's just by telling you excerpts from the text.
And then there's taking apart a commentary stupid enough to say that when drawing a superheroine, one should always shoot for swimsuit model - the actual offense said "Sports Illustrated cover", but if one looks at such covers (or, for that matter, actual Olympians), one finds they match the drawing, not the outsize caricatures of women that are superheroines.
There's a Tumblr now available for images of super women drawn away from the large bust, tight butt model.
The behaviors and societal rules that we enforce on women and men are the same behavioral and societal rules we use against women when they are forced by men. This is a double standard with very real, very evil consequences, because it tells women that they should not be aggressive in defending themselves, and then insists that they should know when they have to be aggressive in defending themselves for That One Time.
At least one judge in the United Kingdom has ruled that even a text chat can be classed obscene and the participants prosecuted or jailed. Even if it was only between two people. In the name of protecting the childrens from predators.
A single gunman opened fire in a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, killing six and injuring three others, including a police officer dispatched to the scene. The gunman was also killed in the ensuing conflict with police. Federal authorities are still investigating the motive for the attack, but they did declare the shooting to be an act of domestic terrorism. Which, unfortunately, says a lot about how much the United States still doesn't trust anyone who looks Middle-Eastern.
Reddit hasa timeline of the attack on the Sikh temple.
Thanks to some serious FAIL in the security practices of Amazon and Apple, a tech columnist had his computer and iPhone wiped, his Twitter account hacked and used to troll, his e-mails locked out. The writer suggests that some of his own practices regarding similarities of e-mail account names, not utilizing multiple-factor security, and the indiscriminate use of cloud services contributed to the depth and severity of the compromising and hack, but with technology moving into cloud everywhere, there's a large chance that all of us will soon be potentially vulnerable to having our entire set of data wiped from our machines. Since the attack, Amazon changed their policies regarding adding credit cards to accounts and Apple temporarily suspended password resets over the phone and said that they will make very certain the protocols actually in place are followed from here on out.
A study finds volume increasing and musicality simplifying in pop songs over time, which can translate to saying "louder and dumber", but when talking about material conceived for radio play, one notes that the conglomerates that own said radio stations are usually looking for specific pigeonholes of sound to play for their target demographics. Additionally, music being spun for clubs is intended to evoke a certain mood and energy flow, and so will often look for beatmatching or pieces that have the same beat style to keep that energy going (for example, check out a DJ named Earwall who does this very well). If one were to say, look in on collegiate radio or some Internet stations, one might find a richer complexity of music, beat patterns, and melody - so always look at the study to see what it does look at, and what it doesn't.
SCIENCE! The Curiosity rover touches down on Mars and begins its exploratory mission. Here's hoping that this Mars mission has the same longevity as the last Mars mission. It's an excellent start to hopefully a fruitful mission.
Also, a scientist had doubts about global-warming data, so he did what science does - ran his own experiments that would give him more information, and the new data satisfied his objections - and so he changed his opinion to match the consensus, that anthropogenic climate change is real. Unfortunately, politicians do not follow the scientific method when it does not suit them.
Finally, artwork generated through the use of microbes in petri dishes, and a minifig, remarkably accurate model of Serenity, constructed entirely of various Lego bricks.
And then, politics. A Romney advisor says that the Mitt plan on economics (which is the Republican plan, the one without details) will do all sorts of cool jobs creation things and make the economy sing. That's the plan without details from the candidate that prefers not to tell you anything about himself, including his tax returns (past one year, that is). Of course it's going to sound fantastical.
Did I mention, in this, that a very small group of oligarchs are providing most of the funding for political ads, super-PACs, and the rest? And that we don't necessarily know who all of these people are, either.
And Willard "Mitt" Romney picks Paul Ryan, architect of several plans to kill the social safety net in the name of austerity, to be his vice presidential running mate for the Republican ticket. This is probably a reaction to the Palin pick from 2008, with more measured thought beforehand, and with a deliberate attempt to appeal to the base and get them out to vote.
The Republican Party is running away as fast as it can from George W. Bush, because reminding people of the Bush years might make them understandably against Mitt Romney.
The Michigan Supreme Court has ordered the recall petition against the Emergency Financial Manager law of Michigan to go forward, overturning a lower decision and over-ruling the Board of Canvassers that deadlocked on the challenge regarding font size on the petitions. The Supreme Court of Michigan analyzes the paper that the petitions are printed on...and finds that the font size is indeed fourteen-point, as required by law, through some very technical analysis of what point size and type size actually mean.
Running out of wars to fight right now, several Republicans are itching to start a new one in Syria.
After Senator Reid repeated an unsourced rumor that Mitt Romney had not paid taxes for ten years, the Republican Party set up attacks against him, calling him a "dirty liar", among other things. Politifact joined in with this idea, even though more properly, the claims are unsubstantiated and there is no evidence on the record to the contrary of those statements, either. The easy way to disprove that would be to release tax data. (Conveniently, this would allow for a more in-depth examination of Mr. Romney's time at Bain Capital, which could lead to different and varied attacks against Mr. Romney.) So on one side, we have repeating rumors without thinking about them. On the other side, out and out lying by the candidate, which can easily be fact-checked. And yet, this does not seem to dent his popularity or the likelihood that he will be elected. Despite lying repeatedly and often.
In Tennessee, ignorant voting has placed someone with views antithetical to the Democratic Party as its nominee to unseat a Republican representative. The Democratic Party there has said they will do nothing to support the candidate, who likely won because they were at the top of the ticket in terms of names.
An interesting thing - a mutual fund that trades entirely based on superstitions. Which, in this economy, may outperform all the other supposedly smart trades going on.
And then, happier stuff - a gender-neutral toy department at Harrod's, using highlighting to show how different fields use more or less words borrowed or rooted in other languages, bus stops designed as giant fruits, (and a Borg Cube wedding cake, and perhaps the first recorded usage of OMG.
And last for tonight, something that the kids may have to avert their eyes for. The various household uses for sexual aids purchased but not used in a while. (Presumably, also cleaned and sterilized before being put to that use.) Also, a study that uses pupil dilation to determine whether a study subject finds men or women sexually attractive. Said study also confirms that the Kinsey scale exists in the wild.
