Presidential Debates: Round Two: Fight?
Oct. 17th, 2012 09:32 pmThe second presidential debate, a Q-and-A session. Once again, going from the transcript of the second presidential debate without inflection or delivery influencing, just what was said.
The questions and answers format returns, after having been used in the Republican candidates debate. Let's see how well-chosen the questions are...
Mr. Romney, right out of the gate, doesn't actually say what he's going to do, past Pell grants and possibly merit scholarships, about education and about ensuring turns a job for the next group of graduates. Not an auspicious start. Even when pressed, Mr. Romney is not providing specifics, which leaves him vulnerable to Mr. Obama's attack.
Mr. Romney avoids saying "Drill, Baby, Drill.", but it's pretty apparent that is his energy policy. He has a much better recovery in tying energy policy to the price of gasoline at the pump, because that resonates with more people. It's simplistic (and veers into inaccuracy territory frequently), but it resonates.
That's a very clever flimflam on taxes, Governor. How convenient that your lowering of rates and eliminating the taxes on interest and capital gains will benefit the very wealthy disproportionally to the middle class people you claim to be doing it for. Also, when you say that the to five percent wool party sixty percent of the tax burden, you are neatly dodging the fact that the percentage of burden won't change if the total revenues collected drop in the right proportions. It's not what he wants you to think it is.
Good on Mr. Obama for bringing out the maths and explaining that this is just the changes without taking care of the underlying and still current deficits.
Another dodge from Mr. Romney - flexible scheduling is good for women in teens of advancing career, but there's still the issue of the party disparity. Does he believe that the disparity is totally due to inflexibility of schedule? Mr. Obama has a stronger position here - not just in what he did, but in recognizing women's health and the costs of being female as issues as well.
Flip-flopper Romney on contraceptives - now he spirits them, when he, his running mate, and his party have been consistently against women, in policy and positions, on the record, for years now.
I would think the open-ended questions about "Why should I vote for you?"are better suited to the end. Here in the middle disrupts the flow. But Romney just lied on the deficit's direction under this administration, so an unforced error there, I guess.
The continual focus on jobs and the economy is Mr. Romney's single saving grace, I guess. He's certainly not deviating from it until forced to by a question.
...and we see why. Romney claims to be for things that the DREAM act would have done, but he also supports forcing the undocumented to have to rely on public transport to get to and from anywhere. Good for Mr. Obama to call out Romney supporting and not supporting the DREAM Act.
The Libya thing is a cf. Both sides, complete cf. That said, if the moderator is telling you you're wrong, Mr. Romney, you're wrong. Move along.
Mr. Romney, putting in a dig for traditional marriage on a question about assault weapons is...dubious. You have a better ground on the Fast And Furious item, but only because people don't understand what happened there and will believe soundbites.
...and saying that government dies not create jobs is a fundamental misunderstanding of the economy, Mr. Romney. Stick to demonizing China and trying to manipulate the economy solely through tax policy.
This was better, but a lot of important questions were left unanswered. Like the abortion/contraception one, and the virtues and values of Obamacare. And the details of the plans Mr. Romney claims to have...maybe in debate three?
