At the top again, the Republican Party continues to bet bigger on a strategy that basically says more wealthy conservative white men will vote in an election than any other demographic. Where possible, of course, they also use the power of the state legislatures to try and make the law say only wealthy conservative white men can vote.

The president of the Barilla pasta company said he would never feature a same-sex couple in his company's advertisements, because his product is intended to cater to traditional families. After being called out on the homophobia, the president of Barilla offered a non-pology that added sexism to the list of offenses committed.

Sinead O'Connor wrote a letter to Miley Cyrus, telling her to make anyone who wants to exploit her take a long walk off a short pier, because they don't care about her as a person. In response, Amanda Palmer says that Miley needs to have enough space to try on her own costumes and be in charge of herself in her own way.

Boys watch shoes with girls as protagonists, so long as the shows have elements that appeal to boys - from the action-packed Avatar: the Legend of Korra through Clarissa Explains It All and Doc McStuffins and Sofia the First. Yet, despite this plethora of girls with boy appeal, the industry still believes boys don't watch girl things, and we still have people in society that will proclaim their belief that boys watching or doing girl things will make them unmanly. Even though boys have imaginative lives and will take stuffed animals to the doctor.

Wendy Davis, whose 11-hour filibuster in the Texas Senate over an abortion bill captured national attention, even if it captured no national media coverage, has announced she will seek the Democratic nomination for governor of Texas in the 2014 election. We hope her victory is swift and decisive, not just for the nomination, but for the governorship. And that she brings a tide of liberals with her into the legislature to undo the work that has gone on so far.

Because it's live as of October 1, now is a good time to start calculating what your Affordable Care Act costs might be. Even though conservatives in many states are doing their damndest to obstruct the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, insisting that it is better for people to go uninsured rather than to buy private insurance in a marketplace. If they had a thought about it that wasn't posturing or believing they're John Galt, they would realize what happens if government behaved the way they profess to want it to run, and work feverishly to get everyone covered.

They don't. Instead, the House of Representatives Republican faction refused to pass a bill funding the government that didn't insist on destroying the Affordable Care Act, which means the easily avoidable government shutdown is a reality. So, have a sampling of what happens now that the government is on shutdown, or rather, the full list of impacts and damages done by the shutdown. Including the stoppage of WIC, housing assistance, regulation, cancer research and clinical trials, and disaster relief, all of which follow the Republican agenda to hurt as many women, children, and poor people until the Democrats agree to hurt women, children, and poor people by not implementing the Affordable Cre Act. Unsurprisingly, the American people is having none of this bullshit.

Teenagers know how to use their social media services better than most, and will say all kinds of things about their lives that would help them in school. If only their teachers could follow and interact with them in meaningful ways. That said, kids and adults alike don't know how to use the computers that saturate their lives, which makes for the interesting dichotomy of people who are savvy about apps and that privacy, but potentially ignorant about how to avoid malware, subvert restrictions, and protect their machines from intrusion, surveillance, and advertisements.

France's national police force is switching over to Linux, saying that the savings themselves would be 40 percent, but also probably securing their systems much more against intrusions and the NSA. Speaking thereof, did you know the NSA uses a case precedent involving tapping a phone line to find a purse snatcher as its justification for the indiscriminate surveillance of United States citizens?

Despite being vilified as a place that's completely all about QUILTBAG people and issues, Hollywood is not as friendly as the stereotype suggests.

Baseball is an incredibly profitable sport. But it's not the sport that everyone is talking about, compared to football and basketball. Which makes sense, as baseball has changed from being a quick sport to a cerebral one, much like soccer. We may not be watching much of it these days, but I think it's shifted into a different niche - baseball is good for certain things, football and basketball for others.

Alton Brown tours Beyond Meat, a soy processing plant that adds fibrous texture to their fake meat, so that it feels, shreds, and otherwise works like meat. Mr. Brown is impressed. We'll match this with science that says the shape of chocolate affects how it tastes.

Edward Snowden's e-mail provider had to comply with a law enforcement request, so they printed off the SSL keys needed to access his mail and sent them over. The federal government was not amused, and then forced them to send digital copies of those keys. Lavabit shut down soon afterward.

Last for tonight, since the previous post talked about how hard it is to find freely-licensed material to use...how about some nice resources on where to find freely-usable images?

As a postscript, machines are starting to take the place of friends and family as our external memories. We're not getting dumber, we're just shifting what pointers we remember. The problem is, of course, we don't really know what they're good at and what things are better left to other external memory devices.
