Greetings! This is the Write Every Day Check-In Post for 4 November 02019.

A lot got done today, which is why I'm feeling somewhat run-down physically. Thank you to all of you that answered yesterday's question about exchange letters. As with many things, it turns out we all do it our own way, and that's the best way that works for us. I'm looking forward to receiving the assignment and going to work on it.

I got a couple of nice comments on old fic and new fic all the same, which is heartening. As December approaches, I'm going to start looking at my counts of various things and come to the conclusion that the Miraculous Ladybug fandom is singlehandedly responsible for a significant amount of my kudos count. Which is good, in that it's a big fandom, and big fandoms have lots of kudos to give. It also helps me put in perspective some things that start to creep in around writing - some things will have low hits and kudos counts, but they'll have great comments and people really enjoyed them. And exchange writing, it seems, tends toward smaller counts of everything, perhaps because there's not a lot of people who find it after the anonymity period is done.

Or maybe I'm just weird and multifannish and taking a little bit from everywhere instead of concentrating in a big fandom until it dies out or the stories all get told, and then moving on to a new space. (It might also be that I don't have a Tumblr, since that still seems to be where a lot of fannish energy is, even after the crackdown.)

Today, in writing, I put a few more words down on an assignment, getting it to a position right before the fun really begins. And by "fun," I mean "a person is going to have something happen to them that they're going to continually dismiss as coincidence or other factors, because their belief that the thing could do what it's doing is nil."

Day 5: 2,415 words on time travel fic #5. I was going to push on through and get a complete draft today, but it's nearly 5pm and at least two more scenes to go. And I need to rest my arms, get some exercise and do the dishes before 7.30pm. Pretty sure I can get the draft done tomorrow, though. (I'm finding all the Nano energy really invigorating, even though I'm not technically doing Nano. :-)

540 words, and wow, that was intense but also enjoyable. Writing this particular character is not an easy thing, as he's intelligent and observant but *not* one to outright admit his observance or awareness of something in words, even to himself. Makes for a tricky balancing act.

It's funny how size of fandom influences one's response to relative levels of feedback. There are Yuletide years I've been perfectly happy to get like ten kudos on my fic during Yuletide itself, because the fandom was very small indeed, and then there are other Yuletide fics of mine that have continued to get a steady trickle of kudos over year(s). And I'm basically equally as happy with all of those fics and response levels, so long as my recip liked the fic too!

Day 4: one section of the draft edited, and 190 words on the WIP. And now I am retreating to bed with a fistful of ibuprofen and a heating pad, because cramps.

Welp, finally managed to beat back November (I miss the days when I could take a week off mid-November to work on Nano. November in this job eats my soul and makes Nano laughable) enough to force myself into 30-45 minutes of minor edits and notes about a couple of places that might be candidates for the next big fixes. Ended up feeling more positive about things. November might not be a great time for the creative juices but there will be words!

I'm also multifannish and am currently enjoying the euphoria of not only finding a new fandom but of being one of the very first authors IN the fandom.

On the other side of euphoria is me and the first half week of nano where I am just flopping. I managed 944 words today but in a busy month that just isn't cutting it (but yeah better than nothing)

Day 4 — a little over 200 words, most of it working out what the principle antagonist in Lamps/hostages thinks he’s doing/what he wants. A useful exercise.

It's amazing how different fandoms have their own ways of interaction, isn't it? I was reflecting on my surprise that one of my Yuletide asks is actually IN Yuletide. It was a big fandom back when it came out, but that was pre-AO3.

I was surprised about another one, but that seems to be a case of the fandom being happy to hang out on Tumblr with gifsets instead of writing fic, which is just not something I enjoy as much.

I... er. I seem to have the longest fic for this fandom on AO3, and the next chapter is going to boost me well past the "two hundred words past the last person" mark I occupy now.

In my experience, the niche fic gets the most ardent love, because the people who wanted that exact fic count themselves very fortunate to have gotten it, and want to make sure you know your efforts are appreciated. I'd keep on writing niche fic anyway, because I write them as much for me as for anyone, but those heartfelt comments mean a lot.

The heartfelt comments and the giant squee really do help make it a good exercise. I love a good comment, but I'm surprised in the amounts of kudos some of my work is collecting over time. I think it's a function of the size of the fandom, sometimes.

Busy busy day today for me, so just a quick check-in to report 2,9k for yesterday, 2163 of which are for NaNo.

I remember entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom and being completely bowled over by the hits and kudos counts; I'd never experienced that size fandom and what it means before. It definitely provides a perspective on relativity. ;-)

On Day 4, I added 678 words to the fanfic I'm working on at the moment.
