This year during Three Weeks for Dreamwidth, I'm writing about reading as a way of becoming an expert in a given subject. Read Part 1: Introduction to Becoming an Expert, Part 2: Architecture, Part 3: Dance, Part 4: Music, Part 5: Painting, Part 6: Poetry, Part 7: Sculpture, Part 8: Conflict Resolution, Part 9: Cooking, Part 10: Coping Skills, Part 11: Gardening, Part 12: Relationship Skills, Part 13: Repairing, Part 14: Survival Skills, Part 15: Archaeology, Part 16: Biology.

Three Weeks for Dreamwidth Part 17: Chemistry

Chemistry is the science of studying matter, particularly how different substances interact with each other. Its subfields include astrochemistry, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, and geochemistry among others. At home, kitchen chemistry is both amusing and useful. Aspects of chemistry include history, famous people, and famous discoveries. Here on Dreamwidth, check out [community profile] common_nature, [community profile] environment, [community profile] naturaldyes, [community profile] science, and [community profile] scienceworld.

They say you never die in dreams, but I came close to it last night.

Gangsters were murdering members of the clergy. A female priest had already been killed. A male priest demonstrated how to thwart a knifeman by dropping to the ground and curling into a ball. We were told not to be to worried because the gangsters had little enthusiasm for the work and if you dodged them they wouldn't pursue you because they were eager to get away to the golf course.

I was in the back garden (of the house I grew up in) with my mother. The dog started to bark and we realised someone had entered the house from the front. I went to the back door and the hitman met me there. He stood a little above me, lowered his shotgun and gave me both barrels in the stomach at point blank range. "Goodbye" I said to my mother and the world in general.

The hitman, looking distraught, said something that amounted to "So

Right Ordering

They have some comparatively modern chairs at the Lewes Meeting House, but they also still have benches. Highly traditional and all that but damn uncomfortable. O, but our ancestors were hardy!

Many of those ancestors are buried in the garden at the front of the building. I was looking at the headstones yesterday with Margaret. The burials date from the late 18th to the early 20th century but all the headstones are exactly the same- same shape and size, same very plain lettering. In the larger world styles in funerary monuments were constantly changing- and a 20th century headstone is wholly unlike an 18th century one- but the Quaker headstone is so lacking in style it's a style classic, beautiful in its simplicity. You couldn't improve on it so why try? Besides Equality is, hand in hand with Simplicity, a Quaker virtue- and it would be reprehensible to attempt to go one up on one's forebears.

IMG_9089.jpeg

We were in Lewes for an Area General Meeting. The Quaker way of doing things- "right ordering"- is slow and laborious and I could wish we'd streamline it. We took a decision- appointed a couple of people to perform a particular job- and then, because someone pointed out that it hadn't been done by the book, we had to do it all over again- with the same result. As always at these  gatherings I look round and note how old everyone is. Was there anyone there under 60? Possibly one, possibly two.  Younger Quakers do exist but they don't have much enthusiasm for sitting on benches ordering things rightly......

"The Worst Thing in Life" opened and closed within a few days. Quain tries calling his friends to talk about recent accomplishments, but the only person willing to talk with him is someone he hasn't contacted in a couple of years.

"No Faster or Firmer Friendships" has 50 new verses. It belongs to Polychrome Heroics and needs $35 to be complete. Josué reads a funny poem to Maria-Vera.

The weather has been variable here. We got some rain the other day. Seen at the birdfeeders this week: a large mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, a pair of cardinals, a male and a female rose-breasted grosbeak separately, a male Baltimore oriole, a brown thrasher, a blue jay, a gray catbird, and a fox squirrel. Currently blooming: pansies, violas, sweet alyssum, alliums, marigolds, honeysuckle, snapdragons, lantana, million bells, blue lobelia, petunias, portulaca, nemesia, wild chives, wood hyacinths, columbine, peonies, irises, mock orange. Green fruit: mulberries, raspberries.

Firstly, we won our game on Sunday, a 1-0 win. Which was nice. Full game again, although we had a woman from the next grade up who could sub us when necessary, but about half of us just stayed on for the full game in the end.

I am thinking I may need to start working at being a centre half - attacking-AND-defending midfielder. There's only one woman who can presently play CH and Team 1 is using her too (out of 4 players who were solid centre halves for our two teams, we've lost two of them this year, and we had 5 the year before).

I prefer striker, tbh. I'm a pretty good forward, especially on a team where we have a solid defensive half line, and at least one person who's a good "finisher" (ie. scores goals). But there's nobody else who could learn the position, and I may not be particularly stand-out, but I can run back and forth and offer options.

A couple of years ago, Mothers' Day stung. I'm still not sure why; I didn't want children and all that. I still don't. But this year, I felt...almost jaunty about the day.

+ Went out for breakfast with the family this morning. That was all right.

+ Finally set up my new computer. Haven't transferred over my documents and whatnot yet, but at least the important stuff is done. It's smaller than my previous laptop and lacks some of the features, but I guess I can work with this. I had to go into the terminal while setting it up in order to force it to create a local account, but hey, I did it! :V Also I found my original disc for Paint Shop Pro 7, and it seems to have installed okay.

+ I'm still going to try to install a new hard drive on the old computer. And maybe also see if I can upgrade the RAM; not sure if it's soldered in or not. I'm going to have to do some research into how exactly to do it; I mean, you can't just buy a thing and plunk it in there. Will have to poke around later.

+ I've scheduled this upcoming Friday off. It'll be nice to have a four-day weekend, I think. (Already planning all the things that I want to do...)

My concerts!

My first concert was: If we're going with "stuff that was not a Christmas concert", I think it was Simon and Garfunkel when I was sixteen? The Bookends/Old Friends reunion tour thing; my dad wanted to go so of course we all went. The Everly Brothers opened for them, was fun.

My first music festival was: MusicFestNW in 2015. Went with Maximo for the headliners (Beirut the first night, Modest Mouse the second).

My last concert was: Jose Gonzales at the Wonder Ballroom last weekend.

My next concert will be: The Last Dinner Party on May 20th!

The artist/band I've seen the most times is: The Decemberists — I think I've seen them like...six times? They're local to Portland, so they play here just about every summer, and, well, yeah.

A concert I wish I could have gone to: I have had tickets to the Shins three times now! I have never actually made it to one of their shows. This feels deeply unfair.

A concert that meant a lot to me: Blind Pilot in Bend in 2019 ♥

A concert that healed me somehow: CHVRCHES in the Crystal Ballroom, April 2014.

If I could re-live only one concert I'd choose: Probably the first time I saw the National (2013, their Trouble Will Find Me tour), because it was such a good night and I loved everything they played.

A concert that I'm glad has been preserved by the internet: I don't rewatch shows online :)

An artist I would have loved to see in concert: Hmm. Probably Brown Bird?

An artist whose concerts I just don't miss: The Decemberists and/or Colin Meloy when he does a solo show! Blind Pilot, too. The National, honestly. Jose Gonzales. Ha. :)

paragon

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 11, 2026 is:

paragon • \PAIR-uh-gahn\  • noun

Paragon is a formal word that refers to a person or thing that is perfect or excellent in some way and should be considered a model or example to be copied.

// In Arthurian legend, Sir Galahad is depicted as a paragon of virtue.

See the entry >

Examples:

"With a bar staff locally renowned for its cocktails, curated French cuisine, an extensive champagne menu and immaculately stylish atmosphere ... Claude is the local paragon of elegance." — Elijah Decious, The Gazette (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), 18 Feb. 2026

Did you know?

Paragon comes from the Old Italian word paragone, which literally means "touchstone." A touchstone is a black stone that was formerly used to judge the purity of gold or silver. The metal was rubbed on the stone and the color of the streak it left indicated its quality. In modern English, both touchstone and paragon have come to signify a standard against which something should be judged. Ultimately, paragon comes from the Greek verb parakonan, meaning "to sharpen," from the prefix para- ("alongside of") and akonē, meaning "whetstone."

Last Day

So no writerly ways today.

I went to see the blood sirens at the pool today but some of them were late and I had to bug off before they came (and I forgot cameras/phones) I had to run back upstairs to dress for my second talk.

I presented my research into the first ladies doctors. A lot less people today but that's expected on the last day. A lot of people would have been checking out at this time but I had about a half dozen people and it went really well. They were engaged (and a little outraged as you should be listening to this talk) I had a French Canadian helping me with the French last names which I appreciated it really

There weren't many talks today being the last day but I did sneak ELD into the dealer's room for a while and I was hijacked into the nerf dueling. It was fun. I was shot in the chest on the third shot. Alas. I did sneak out soon after because it was already after 1 and I needed lunch and I wanted one last round in the dealers room to buy a few last gifts for me and others. Did I need hand made over priced marshmallow? No but yes I bought them (I swear I'm going to learn to make these. It looks easy) And a witchy wooden tea light luminiere.

Spent some time talking to Leanna before going to the tea cup races. I went upstairs for a bit to drop off the junk and went back down for closing ceremonies and to pick up something from the auction (to help a LGBT/Diversity group) that I had won (well ELD wanted it. I'll drop it off to her in a few weeks when I use her as a waystop to KC) As far as I could tell...there were no closing ceremonies that anyone formally did and my friend PQ was wheeling his stuff out so I just went upstairs, tossed the garb upon which the clothes rack fell apart in the room. Whee.

I sat down and did the remains of my grading for the next three hours. I had to have it down by tomorrow (Turned out thanks to that Hack of Canvas a few days ago I had until Tuesday) Anyhow it's done and I'm free until August. I need the break such as it will be.

I was too tired to go out so I overpaid to Doordash Chinese (one of the highly recced ones but honestly it wasn't that fantastic). I picked the wrong dim sum but the ones I really wanted were basically snack size at entree prices. I found a dish I haven't had in ages. I was just telling ELD I have only seen Hong sue gai in two places well they had it. I can't fault the portion size and it was tasty so I'm happy enough.

Afterwards I wanted a swim myself. I get in. Let me tell you I have polar bear plunged in Wisconsin lakes warmer than this pool. No wonder the mermaids were sitting outside it. It was fucking freezing and I LOVE a cool pool. I turn and see a sign. No more than 5 people in the pool and NO swimming alone or you get 100$ fine. Well then. I splash back out and give up (not going to miss much I suppose)

Tomorrow I have a few things lined up and something for Tuesday morning (I drive home Tuesday)

It was a good con but small. Too small. I overheard the con runners talking about how unexpectedly small it was. Well they moved it from March to Mother's Day which in a survey they found people didn't like that timing But the real reason listed was the fucking gas prices. Shocker. I do hope they move the date again because I cannot be a repeat con goer on this weekend.

This was Miami Vice Sunday. There was a new fic and a new song vid. Which almost never happens. It was like Christmas.

I've been watching a lot of episodes and doing my recap posts, but I haven't been writing a lot because the dictation on the computer sucks. I keep having to fix things, and it's hard typing one handed. Plus, I haven’t got the hang of dictating my stories into the computer. It takes me longer than if I was able to type it. However, since I'm bored anyway, I should take this opportunity to dictate my Quantum Leap novel Dreamchaser into the computer so I can post it online. I wrote it before I had a computer and never transferred it over.

I've been doing a few [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth  stuff off and on, mostly memes.

Just as I was closing my house manager shift last night, an important door lost an integral part. So, I was late getting home.

Today, get in, door not fixed. I get to make sure it is used judiciously.

During the early part of the evening shift, someone on campus, concerned that there was someone on campus pretending to be a cop, decided that the best course of action was to dress entirely in black, including mask, then approach random people to warn them there was a fake cop on campus. This did not instill calm but the campus cops dealt with it.

As I was waiting to go home, I thought I could smell skunk. Asked my HM about it. It seems someone managed to anger the local skunk enough to get sprayed. Not me!

It's fairly amusing to get scam calls to hang up on me - I'll ask for a website or an email, and they cut their losses then and there.

"Do you have a website?"

"No."

"Why?"

It was one of the brighter points of the day. There was a decided lack of stimulation, and it's making the evening drag on somewhat. I'm hoping a light weights routine will help some, once I decide what movie to do it to.

[community profile] highadrenalineexchange has revealed authors, and I can reveal what I wrote! I had a lot of fun with a Vedero-focused Goblin Emperor fic.

Title: The Obloquy of Newness
Author: Beatrice_otter
Fandom: Goblin Emperor
Characters: Vedero Drazhin
Written for: DontStopHerNow in High Adrenaline 2026
Summary: Vedero would like nothing more than to study the stars. If only court politics and gossip did not get in her way ...

Author's Note: Betaed by Irina. Title from The Old Astronomer by Sarah Williams.

On AO3. On Squidgeworld. On Dreamwidth. On tumblr. On Pillowfort.

Vedero could barely see her hands as they worked.

That was alright; they knew their business. They did not need to see more than the ghostly outlines of the white tubs in the sink to fish around in the sodium sulfite solution with rubber-coated tongs and grab the edge of the paper and hold it up so that some of the fluid would drip off, before settling it gently in the tub of acetic acid that would stop the silver halide crystals from continuing to develop. She counted the seconds, and then moved the paper to the sodium thiosulfate that would wash away the excess silver from the paper, so that when she took the images out into the light, they would not be re-exposed.

On the whole, it was a very meditative process. )
