Last Day

So no writerly ways today.

I went to see the blood sirens at the pool today but some of them were late and I had to bug off before they came (and I forgot cameras/phones) I had to run back upstairs to dress for my second talk.

I presented my research into the first ladies doctors. A lot less people today but that's expected on the last day. A lot of people would have been checking out at this time but I had about a half dozen people and it went really well. They were engaged (and a little outraged as you should be listening to this talk) I had a French Canadian helping me with the French last names which I appreciated it really

There weren't many talks today being the last day but I did sneak ELD into the dealer's room for a while and I was hijacked into the nerf dueling. It was fun. I was shot in the chest on the third shot. Alas. I did sneak out soon after because it was already after 1 and I needed lunch and I wanted one last round in the dealers room to buy a few last gifts for me and others. Did I need hand made over priced marshmallow? No but yes I bought them (I swear I'm going to learn to make these. It looks easy) And a witchy wooden tea light luminiere.

Spent some time talking to Leanna before going to the tea cup races. I went upstairs for a bit to drop off the junk and went back down for closing ceremonies and to pick up something from the auction (to help a LGBT/Diversity group) that I had won (well ELD wanted it. I'll drop it off to her in a few weeks when I use her as a waystop to KC) As far as I could tell...there were no closing ceremonies that anyone formally did and my friend PQ was wheeling his stuff out so I just went upstairs, tossed the garb upon which the clothes rack fell apart in the room. Whee.

I sat down and did the remains of my grading for the next three hours. I had to have it down by tomorrow (Turned out thanks to that Hack of Canvas a few days ago I had until Tuesday) Anyhow it's done and I'm free until August. I need the break such as it will be.

I was too tired to go out so I overpaid to Doordash Chinese (one of the highly recced ones but honestly it wasn't that fantastic). I picked the wrong dim sum but the ones I really wanted were basically snack size at entree prices. I found a dish I haven't had in ages. I was just telling ELD I have only seen Hong sue gai in two places well they had it. I can't fault the portion size and it was tasty so I'm happy enough.

Afterwards I wanted a swim myself. I get in. Let me tell you I have polar bear plunged in Wisconsin lakes warmer than this pool. No wonder the mermaids were sitting outside it. It was fucking freezing and I LOVE a cool pool. I turn and see a sign. No more than 5 people in the pool and NO swimming alone or you get 100$ fine. Well then. I splash back out and give up (not going to miss much I suppose)

Tomorrow I have a few things lined up and something for Tuesday morning (I drive home Tuesday)

It was a good con but small. Too small. I overheard the con runners talking about how unexpectedly small it was. Well they moved it from March to Mother's Day which in a survey they found people didn't like that timing But the real reason listed was the fucking gas prices. Shocker. I do hope they move the date again because I cannot be a repeat con goer on this weekend.

Daily Happiness

1. I was hoping we'd get the call to pick up the new bikes yesterday or today, but so far no news, so I'm guessing it will be tomorrow. I don't have anything tomorrow or Tuesday morning for work that I have to do at a specific time, though, so we could still easily go pick them up then and not have to wait for next weekend.

2. It was nice to have a weekend at home. We almost always go to Disneyland on the weekend, but since we went on Thursday, that meant both weekend days were just spent at home relaxing.

3. I've been playing Under the Island, a cute Zelda-like for the Switch. It's a lot of fun! I actually started playing the demo when we were in Japan, but I didn't play much there and then haven't played at all since we got home, but I picked it up again Friday and finished the demo, then downloaded the full game. Annoyingly the demo save does not port over to the game, so I had to replay the whole first dungeon, but I was much faster about it having just done it right before. I've played a ton yesterday and today and it seems like a fairly short game, so I think I'll probably finish it soon at this rate, but it's a lot of fun.

4. A couple months ago I built the lego Himeji Castle and put it on a shelf out in the garage, but it's not big enough to fill the whole shelf but also too big to share with another big set. I had a set of bonsai plants that I hadn't built yet, so I built those and put them around the castle to make a shelf of all Japanese themed sets. Then I also did the Japanese maple, and then when we got back from Japan I started working on this cherry blossom landscape, which is a new set that we'd gotten not long before we went on vacation. I wasn't originally planning to put it in the same display, but there was no good place in my room so I decided to see how it looks with the others and I love it.

I added some non-lego figures as well (all stuff we got in Japan and have yet to find a spot for and were sitting in the pile of souvenirs in the garage).

5. It's been a full week since Jasper had any pee incidents. He was fine when Alex was over this evening. Fingers crossed that we stay pee free, but if nothing else I'm glad to have had a whole week without frantic cleaning.

6. Since Carla's been having problems with this same toe for years, she had been doing regular foot soaks a while back and had at one point bought a bunch of bags of epsom salts that were on clearance for like $1.50, and then she stopped doing the soaks and the bags are just out in the shed not getting used. But soaking with epsom salts twice a day was specifically recommended as after care for the nail removal so it was great to have those ready to go and not need to go out and buy anything.

7. Haven't seen Ollie up in the laundry area recently but then this morning he was just up there chilling.

Fatally Frosted (Donut Shop Mystery, #2)Fatally Frosted by Jessica Beck

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

View all my reviews

I finished reading my “spare” book today: Fatally Frosted by Jessica Beck. It’s the second installment in the “Donut Shop” series of cozy mysteries. The main character is Suzanne Hart, who owns and runs Donut Hearts.

Suzanne is both excited and anxious about demonstrating donut-making at a local tour of kitchens fundraiser. Marge Rankin has asked Suzanne to showcase her kitchen for the demonstration. Suzanne is mildly surprised that Marge was chosen, considering her animosity with Peg Masterson, who is spearheading the tour. When Peg drops dead on the first morning of the tour, right outside Marge’s house, she’s found clutching one of Suzanne’s signature donuts. With her business reputation on the line, Suzanne starts applying herself to finding out who used one of her donuts to deliver a lethal dose of poison.

I enjoyed the story for the most part. I thought Suzanne was somewhat pushy when she was asking questions of those whom she suspected may have murdered Peg. Most of the story was taken up with Suzanne’s sleuthing. She was shown at work and socializing a little bit, but I would prefer more balance. Characters were fleshed out, and the plot proceeded in a sensible fashion.

Favorite lines:
♦ “I’m a cop; trust me, I know donuts.”
♦ I couldn’t have been more surprised if she’d handed me a hundred dollar bill or a live chicken.
♦ Peg could have left every dime to the Society to Outlaw Daylight Savings Time for all I knew.
♦ “Sometimes I think authors have their characters do foolish things just to advance the plot.”

Decent enough to earn four stars.

Just as I was closing my house manager shift last night, an important door lost an integral part. So, I was late getting home.

Today, get in, door not fixed. I get to make sure it is used judiciously.

During the early part of the evening shift, someone on campus, concerned that there was someone on campus pretending to be a cop, decided that the best course of action was to dress entirely in black, including mask, then approach random people to warn them there was a fake cop on campus. This did not instill calm but the campus cops dealt with it.

As I was waiting to go home, I thought I could smell skunk. Asked my HM about it. It seems someone managed to anger the local skunk enough to get sprayed. Not me!

It's fairly amusing to get scam calls to hang up on me - I'll ask for a website or an email, and they cut their losses then and there.

"Do you have a website?"

"No."

"Why?"

It was one of the brighter points of the day. There was a decided lack of stimulation, and it's making the evening drag on somewhat. I'm hoping a light weights routine will help some, once I decide what movie to do it to.

[community profile] highadrenalineexchange has revealed authors, and I can reveal what I wrote! I had a lot of fun with a Vedero-focused Goblin Emperor fic.

Title: The Obloquy of Newness
Author: Beatrice_otter
Fandom: Goblin Emperor
Characters: Vedero Drazhin
Written for: DontStopHerNow in High Adrenaline 2026
Summary: Vedero would like nothing more than to study the stars. If only court politics and gossip did not get in her way ...

Author's Note: Betaed by Irina. Title from The Old Astronomer by Sarah Williams.

On AO3. On Squidgeworld. On Dreamwidth. On tumblr. On Pillowfort.

Vedero could barely see her hands as they worked.

That was alright; they knew their business. They did not need to see more than the ghostly outlines of the white tubs in the sink to fish around in the sodium sulfite solution with rubber-coated tongs and grab the edge of the paper and hold it up so that some of the fluid would drip off, before settling it gently in the tub of acetic acid that would stop the silver halide crystals from continuing to develop. She counted the seconds, and then moved the paper to the sodium thiosulfate that would wash away the excess silver from the paper, so that when she took the images out into the light, they would not be re-exposed.

On the whole, it was a very meditative process. )

Out of the woods?

I have a small pen-knife that my father gave me many years ago (probably around 1989). It was when he was still able to do things like: paint landscapes, make furniture and toys, read, do caligraphy, drive a car, talk on the phone, go visiting and teach at the university. My mom was rather sick at the time and I remember how heavily her illness weighed on him. There were days when I felt pretty helpless in finding ways to offer him any substantial comfort. We would go to the hospital together - back and forth, back and forth, back and forth - and I especially remember the night when a really super vascular doctor was doing everything he could but told us ”Betty was not out of the woods”. It was nearly the Fourth of July and there were fireworks around the city and at some point my dad, fumbling a newspaper that he wasn’t really reading, said ”it doesn’t look good”. He was trying to keep it together but I knew it has hard. I turned around and looked out the window pretending to be interested in the fireworks. I didn’t want him to see me crying. Well anyhow, I was using this pen-knife a while ago and it got me thinking about mom and dad and how both are gone now - how my dad’s strokes left him frail and child-like within a few months after he had given me this little knife.

I am okay but it is always amazing to me how quickly things change. I am wondering though, why the expression: ’out of the woods’ - because really for me ”being IN the
woods” makes me feel safe and protected. Well, maybe mom and dad are in the woods now and I’m okay with that too.

The baby creatures
run in from the cold
Back to the nest
just like the days of old
There in the safety
of a mother’s arms
The warmth of ages,
far away from harm again.

One week after our epic drive to charge my car battery, it's flat again, even with the trickle charger installed. I got up early to take it down to the mechanic for its Warrant of Fitness, and nope. (So they came and collected it.)

Update: Apparently a new battery will hold its charge better, so. That. Plus they're going to replace the broken latch on the boot (AKA trunk), which will mean I'll actually be able to access it for things like groceries. Luxury! (Assuming I ever drive again, who even knows at this point.) Anyway.

At this stage it feels like my car is higher maintenance than anything else in my life except for my body. ;-p

The Best Laid Plans...

So, I figured out what I want to stream for my Memorial Day weekend charity streamathon.

I put a video together and posted it.

I also commented to some people that it was odd that I could not preorder Beastro, which had a launch date of May 21 - the day before the streamathon is to begin.

Notice the past tense.

I learned today that the release has been pushed to June 11.

Beastro was my plan for 2 of 4 days.

I am now poking around Steam and GoG for ideas...

And also dealing with the usual bit of depression I get when I settle on a plan and it falls apart outside my control.

If I had a significant regular audience, I would be tempted to offer the laughable entertainment of my utter lack of skill at FPSes.

Doors and Twins and River and Ruin

I will never have time to write this in the day. It has many different parts and I will probably fail to connect them. But.

In Buda Castle, there's this room:

Yes, it's just full of doors standing there. Each blue door represents one of the ten chapters of The Admonitions written by Saint King Stephen in 1015 to his son Emeric. These are a new installation; St Stephen's Hall, like much of the castle was destroyed in WWII.

Now say you are standing in front of those doors; and say you are at once yourself split into twins light and dark, somehow always together but each twin goes through a different door and sees a different...something. The light twin goes through a door and finds themself beside the Danube, a place of happy people dancing, lights on the water, shores twinkling pretty as the twilight rolls in and the music plays.

The dark twin goes through another door and finds themself facing 60 pairs of sculpted shoes on a silent far from twinkling shore. These are a memorial to some 23,000 people - around 20,000 of whom were Jewish - who were stood there and told to step out of their shoes by members of the fanatical fascist Arrow Cross Party, government of Hungary from 1944-45.

They shot all those people, whose bodies then tumbled into the Danube. The dark twin felt it, a struggling last breath, a clutching of the chest, the deep blue closing overhead. The light twin will not have this because she is determined to live in the real world. She pulls the dark twin out of the water, fighting upwards.

The light and dark twin together know the river is beautiful and entirely innocent. They can share a drink there, smile, dance to the music, hold both visions of the Danube, understand both are true. This sounds like a paradox and is; I don't think it is something achieved by trying, indeed I don't know how it is done, only that it is done.

Through another door, and suddenly the twins are at Zsimpla Kert, first and most famous ruin bar in Budapest.

After WWII, the Jewish Ghetto was unsurprisingly empty; the Soviets had come to Hungary with no intention of leaving. They crushed the Arrow Cross party, hunted down and hanged its leaders and, in a poetic echo of Hungarian collaborative deportations - something like 440,000 gone to places like Auschwitz - sent many of that party's members to gulag forced-labour camps. Sometimes even the light twin hear karma's cold laughter.

Understandably the Jewish folk who managed to get out were not inclined to return. The buildings became dilapidated because the Soviets were not interested or didn't have the money to look after them. Time passed, and in the late 1990s/early 2000s drinking rooms began to rise in the ruined buildings, graffitti scrawled, adorned with tat and random art. Now everybody loves them. This is a thing you can do as the twins; You can walk through at least two realities at exactly the same time, and it's fabulous albeit occasionally distressing/weird. Up at Buda Castle there's a room with many doors and no doorways. At Zsimpla Kert there are many doorways and no doors.

I don't know what it means, only that there is something there. The doors know, the twins know, the river doesn't know and the ruin doesn't care. I have no answer and know this to be an unsatisfactory incomplete telling. But it is true.
