I considered volunteering, but decided against it. It's not that I couldn't spare the time, the expense or the energy but what I could accomplish moving sandbags in New Orleans was less for the greater good than what I can accomplish moving chemicals in a lab and volunteering as I currently do now.
I'm not saying that the people that drop everything aren't doing a great thing, they are. At the same time, there are still the victims of domestic violence that need counseling, the homeless that need meals, the children born with AIDS that need support. In fact these causes, though they may be overshadowed by Katrina (and possibly rightfully so) are probably feeling a pinch as rising gas prices and competing causes (both the tsunami and now this) have thinned the disposable income allowance of many households.
I think my point is this. It is always possible to make a positive difference in the world, politicians, disasters and college schedules nonwithstanding. While helping the thousands dead and millions of refugees in Louisiana may be out of your reach, there are many thousands of homeless, veterans, and marginalized groups of society out there that need your help. It may not be as desperate a need as Katrina is right now but it's a need nonetheless.
You may not be superhuman, but you can do good things, one baby racoon at a time.
