Tomorrow's Friday, isn't it?
Feb. 3rd, 2005 11:42 pmSo that means more classwork. (More work? Right-o) Maybe I should have a refreshing beverage with that work - but I wouldn't know where to put it either.
Or maybe we'll do as McDonalds wants us to - have sex with our food. Wait a minute, something's not right there... much like babies contracting herpes during their circumcisions.
The better kind of wrongness is the one pervading Redmond - an invasion of iPods in Microsoft's inner sanctum? That's wrong, and yet at the same time, so very, very right... so right that I'll make the wrong into a funny thing and laugh in Gates's face (even though he's laughing because I'm running his virus-prone and security-strange OS). Speaking of viruses, someone gave running five viruses in Windows Emulation under Linux, all with apparently dismal results. Of course, if Microsoft were to actually tighten security to the point where the viruses would be blocked out, I imagine the result would be some sort of draconian iron box that didn't let you run anything but completely trusted Microsoft content that you had to verify yourself for eleventy-billion times just to get the first part of.
Yeah, watched the last English-dub release of Last Exile today, too. Commendable voice acting job for the English cast, who acted themselves well and gave life to the characters. I'm still a bit irked about the general lack of spoken nautical terms that are clearly present in the subtitle track, although it did get better as the series progressed. Still, I doubt that any XO would call for full speed when they really wanted flank speed. Too much training in officer school to make mistakes in calling, or to leave out those terms entirely. I'm annoyed by the fact that the English cast is also listed in a lump of names, instead of matching name to role. I can use other places to garner that information, but I'd really rather have that in the credits. There are other companies that do this, and I like them much more for it.
And as I've been watching the series, I notice that I'd really like to have seen more exposition on Alister and her relationship with Tatiana. The Rude Mechanic(al)s of the Silvana get more air time, so we get to know them a little better, even without much of their backstory being revealed to us. Alis is almost wholly dependent on revelations in Tatiana's story to get to know a little bit about her own. Tatiana's story is not very well-developed beyond what it needs to be to understand her tough exterior/softer interior personality in relation to the main character. It's a shame, too, because Alis is a genuinely interesting person to me. I notice that I tend to want to see more exposition out of the secondary characters that I find more interesting, whatever I may be watching or reading. I suppose this is where fanfiction comes in handy, because some of it tries to fill in gaps that the main story leaves out (deliberately or otherwise). There's probably some fic written about the time Alis and Tatiana spent before Claus came into the picture. Whether it's any good, I don't know. But it's probably there.
Maybe it's because I think Alis is the one member of the supporting cast that's really underdeveloped. Everyone else gets a lot more air time and exposition than she does, and so it may be some part of the mystery about her that's appealing. But for the limited air that she got, Alis came across as a genuinely kind person, as well as a good friend of Tatiana's. It brings about a lot of questions about her, not just in relation to Tatiana, but in general. (Edit: Through a chance meeting in the Wikipedia, I find that Alister is an aternate spelling of the Gaelic version of the same root-name as my own. Kindred spirits, perhaps?)
This may be a general theme of mine, that I want to fill in the gaps left by a story, especially out in the secondary character realm. Is this a trend with other people who watch and read as well, or am I just strange like that?
Ah, well. Back to the thesis revision - it won't get done unless I do it, much as I want to put it off.
