silveradept: An 8-bit explosion, using the word BOMB in a red-orange gradient on a white background. (Bomb!)
It's been a rather... hot day here at Sanadri Enterprises, with opinions and their more flammable counterparts being slung about e-mail and discussion forums such as LJ for most of today. (Doesn't help that certain Texas legislators are justifying violence against the judiciary, either)

The major heat has been around an editorial cartoon published in today's student newspaper, the Michigan Daily. (Image Here) The initial reaction was one of outrage - several of the members of the e-mail list fired off volleys about how the paper was kicking Catholics while they were down and insulting the memory of the Pope. At some point, irritation gave rise to response (from me) about how journalists are permitted to do as they did. With that hashed out, the second opinion has risen that the timing on it, being so shortly after the Pope's death, is disrespectful to the good that John Paul did. My opinion, and response generated from that, is that it is better that we have conflicting images now rather than having one image cemented in the minds of the people and the dissent coming only after the "good Pope" mentality has been entrenched.

The last opinion ventured forth is one that the editorial is attacking media perception of the Pope, with the underlying problems that image has spelled out in the books below him. It's an interesting take, but it requires giving the cartoonist more intelligence than the usual staff member. Although I've just learned s/he's a freshman, so it might be that the Daily hasn't gotten to him/her yet.

The very latest news is that there's possibility of canonization in the Pope's future. Anyone who can confirm or deny this?

Take a time-out from that and check out this fascinating tale of temporal progression. If you're still having after-effects, cleanse your palate with the rather cracker-like Holyland Tour. If you still have a taste, then see which of the Flame Warriors I fit as.

Then, we can begin again. It's a well-established fact in the Boardieverse that FLEET rules the roost. Their numbers and talent are impressive, and the station they built and then leased to the rest of us peons has become a symbol of the Board itself, in many ways. This has occasionally bred resentment amongst non-allied groups, who think that FLEET's role of insidiousness and quality art and fiction translates into arrogance by the people behind the avatar, and thinking themselves superior to the rest of us. There are certain projects underway that are trying to undercut this mentality and produce something of quality through an alliance of the non-aligned. Its success is yet to be determined.

Either way, that station that is the symbol of Board Power and Pride in space has apparently been sieged with requests here and there, occasionally from the project, to allow its destruction or sinking. To which FLEET has given a rather emphatic no. Admittedly, as a symbol of Board power, sinking it would be an easy way to produce a powerful enemy out of one's back pocket. However, the FH does better orbiting than crashed. To introduce a power to rival the Board, merely sinking the FH would not be enough. Not to mention that doing so would probably require some sort of deus ex machina, and the only Goddess of that world sits on Deck Zero.

What I don't understand is, if people want to write about a sunken FH, they can write about it in the timeline, which sets it very, very far into the future from the B/Verse and likely makes it a candidate as an alternate future if and when the continuity catches up to it. Or they can write an Alternate Universe where the FH was sunk, or never even built. But that doesn't appeal to many, I suspect, because then they aren't part of the official canon, which FLEET may be wrongly presented as the custodians and dictators of. Either way, I think the proper way of doing things is to present yourself as a writer who can handle the complexities of the universe before trying to make major alterations to the canon. If you do things well, you might one day, write the lines that sink the FH. But don't expect FLEET to go down without a fight. Especially when they have the advantage of physics at their beck and call.

I did stay awake at work today - this is an improvement, because I've found a trigger - reading my school assignments, for some odd reason, puts me in a tired phase. I got through about two chapters, and then felt it coming on, so I stopped and did other things. I didn't fall asleep. As best as I know, anyway. Will continue to experiment for Thursday - it may become a more moot point soon, as I may be changing over jobs at the end of the semester to something else. Interviews tomorrow. I also need to talk to the Registrar about getting my Rackham appointment approved. May be that I have to wait until I actually graduate before they'll let me register. Which would suck royally. Plus, I need to get them to take off the class I registered for under LSA undergraduate to see if I could. If that turns out that's how I'm supposed to do it for now, well, that'll be okay. So tomorrow is a fairly packed day. Hopefully I'll get through it okay... problem is - I don't have any breakfast cereal, and I forgot to buy some today. So tomorrow may be a matter of taking some quarters and buying a bagel or two to get through class. And then I'll buy the cereal. I think. I hope. Maybe I'll buy bagels and use them for breakfast instead. Been a while since I had bagels for breakfast. We'll see.

By the way, have I mentioned that this room is rather on the humid side when the windows are shut? I know that I had a box fan in here at one point. whether that has been moved or moved home, I have no idea, but I'm going to need to bring it back if the weather stays like this. The forecast says it won't. Oh, well.
