Greetings, all. We’re now well into the next Presidency, and it looks like comedians have still found plenty of political material to use in their routines. But if you want a throwback to earlier times, the creators of Goodnight Bush presented their idea of the George W. Bush Presidential Librarium back in January.
At the world desk, more on the Pope’s latest encyclical, including Benedict's distate for the zealous enforcement of intellectual property, especially in medicine, and the way that corporatism and some cultural things exploit humans instead of lifting them all into better lives - the Pope says you should care about saving lives first, and then making profits later.
Elsewhere in the world, analysis of the Uighur unrest as breaking the myth that China is all Han Chinese with a few minorities, and may be the precursor to all Chinese minorities starting to reassert their differences.
South Korea faces a fresh wave of cyber-attacks, as investigators continue to try and find the culprits.
Mr. Ahmadinejad declares that world powers must interact with his government, “despite their efforts and propaganda, a government will be in power with the support of 40 million votes”, according to him. That would be, apparently, also with the need to fire tear gas into crowds protesting his 40 million vote support, as well as using the un-uniformed militia to try and disperse them.
Domestically, because there are nuke talks going on, and there’s that pesky reminder in the news every so often that certain countries have nuclear weapons that we think shouldn’t, is your city prepared in case someone does something nuclear and stupid?
The Director of the CIA has admitted to, by not briefing the Congress as fully as he should, hiding things, but not to actually misleading the Congress, and he stands by the assertion that he did not mislead them, as Democrats and Speaker Pelosi have alleged. Even if it is the Vulcan way (Why lie when you can just omit?), I think the Director should face some sort of investifation to see what he withheld and what consequences that withholding had. The White House does not favor giving briefings to the entire Intelligence Committees, instead of the small group that is briefed currently, by indicating it will veto a bill containing language to that effect, if that version should pass both houses.
Thinking it will influence the decision of the Senators, the Republicans are planning on having one of the New Haven firefighters testify at the confirmation hearing of Sonia Sotomayor, among other witness. They hope, of course, to paint the judge as reckless, irresponsible and more concerned about the racial and ethnic background of the palyers in a case than the law.
Last out before opinions, the memorial service to Michael Jackson drew 31.1 million viewers across several networks. Less than the inauguration of Barack Obama, on par with American Idol finales. And let the "outrage" start anew as another carefully groomed Disney star decides she's had enough of being the innocent, with the photo shoot to prove it. We like the commentary on this one, talking about how Miley is likely to run head-on into the world that's decided she's become a slut, and will discard her as quickly as they come to that conclusion.
In opinions, Mr. Kamiya thinks we should let Sarah Palin's celebrity die already, because it’s increasingly dangerous to keep that on life support and devote media cycles to it.
The Slacktivist introduces us to Texas State Rep. Cynthia Dunbar, who is under consideration for chairperson of the State Board fo Education in Texas. This is a problem, because Cynthia Dunbar is dedicated to the prospect of destroying public education, believes in unconstitutional tests of religion as a requirement for public office, and so forth. This is a potential case of out of the frying pan, into the fire, as Texas just got done ousting a religious zealot from the position. Not only that, Dunbar is willing to believe creationist publications that misrepresent the positions of Nobel Prize winners. If Governor Perry, he of secession infamy, were to appoint her to the position, Texas’s schools would be set back immensely as the Board would have to fight itself to get real standards passed and to avoid instituting religious demands in a secular school. Surely he wouldn’t be that stupid?
In technology, a successful stage one plasma rocket test, three millimeters and a good rear-projection system creates a digital booth person, algorithms using broadcasts of subtitles and sign language to pick up some of the sign language, which they had not been exposed to before, modified silicon that can pick up wider light wavelengths and be manufactured easily, the first successful test of a drug that expanded mice lifespans by three times, and the price cut of a Kindle - sign of success or of pressure?
Last for tonight, pictures of Chillout, the Dubai bar constructed of ice. And , once again, pictures of master artists using junk to play shadow puppets with.
