Boosting the signal before we begin - a yard sale of books, comic issues, and some spiffy CCG materials, too. Everybody needs a little help, and in this case, you can get some nice swag.

There's a lot of tragedy going around at this point, apparently. The weather is wreaking havoc in the world, whether being too wet, windy, and stormy, or wildfire-y or far too little moisture for the crops. If you were unfortunate enough to be in Aurora, CO during a midnight showing of The Dark Night Rises, a gas-mask clad man threw gas grenades and then opened fire on theatergoers, killing 12 and wounding 58 more. (The concurrent tragedy is that the Onion is once again unable to satire reality - after seeing how little support even discussing sensible regulations on weapons ownership has, the paper points out we already know how the discussions and consequences will turn out.

By the way, has anyone noticed how nobody seems to be commenting on how badly broken white men must be with so many of them committing horrible atrocities, even though any other groups would be having that conversation all across the national media?

Staring such a tragedy in the face, the President made remarks, Mr. Romney made a statement, the Republican Speaker of the House made remarks...but perhaps as a gesture of the seriousness of things, Messrs. Obama and Romney pulled their political ads from the state of Colorado.

Elsewhere, Syria continues to engage in civil strife, and the current regime is losing.

In response to a tragedy, Pennsylvania State University (temporarily?) removed the statue of Joe Paterno in front of their football stadium. There will be further sanctions and penalties coming to the school later.

And remembering a tragedy, it's been a year since someone gunned down children in a misguided attempt to make commentary on Europe's economic unity.

Last for the top lines, a non-tragedy thing. There's also Slacktiverse's directory of freely available cultural and literature resources. Contribute what you know, too.

Out in the world today, there's a lot of money parked in offshore havens to avoid paying necessary tax revenues to the various governments in the country the companies are incorporated in.

Domestically, the president of Chick-fil-A, an organization that makes no secret of its explicitly Christian orientation, has unsuprisingly taken a position against equal legal rights for gay men and lesbians.

The Boy Scouts of America reaffirmed that they will not allow openly lesbian or gay people to serve in leadership capacities in their troops and organization. This puts them in direct conflict with most other Scouting or Guiding organizations around the world. The BSA may be the last refuge for people who don't want to believe that QUILTBAG people exist. And we wonder how many young men get harmed by this latest decision.

The courts, however, have ruled that Muslims are, in fact, part of a real religion, and thus allowed to occupy a mosque they have built, capping off a two-year fight against a suit filed against them and then a technicality fight that prevented a certificate of occupancy from being issued for the mosque.

Romney surrogate John Sununu said that he wished the President would learn to be an Aerican...for which we are reminded that Scott Adams mentioned an impression involving something looking like a rabid dog in a Dilbert strip. I have a better idea why that image was conjured now.

Unfortunately, the crazy tends to...continue. Rush Limbaugh, for example, beleived that the Batman villain Bane (a brilliant villain) was filmmakers making a jab at Mitt Romney and Bain Capital. And then tried to walk it back by denying what he said.

Moving on: Michelle Bachmann has a list of Muslims in the United States government, including allies of the Muslim Brotherhood, which results in

And then there's Mitt Romney and his campaign. Romney claimed that the Obama administration has been participating in "crony capitalism", using something that's been disproven in an attack ad. Then there's the practice of taking Obama out of context and using it in attack ads, (that's repeatedly taking Obama out ofcontext for attack ads, by the way) and the part where Mitt Romney was making lots of business decisions at Bain long after he supposedly left the company for the Olympics.

All the while, by the way, Mr. Romney refuses to disclose the names of his donors and . When speculation appeared that he's not releasing because he might not have paid any taxes in a year, Mr. Romney denied the claim. But the proof would be in the tax returns he refuses to release.

Last for tonight, we point out that misandry, as well as misogyny, and stereotropeing deserves to be called out and stomped on as well. That post points out how much young men get hurt when people stereotrope comic book readers, as well as trying to excuse the stripperific poses for the women as the last real pleasure of young geeky comic book readers.
