Week's middle.
Aug. 3rd, 2006 12:24 amHappy birthday to the wielder of Cyril and the Inherently Superior Commodore. Hopefully you enjoyed the privileges you got for it being your date of life.
Today was a rather fun day. Once again, being in A/C is nice. Although much of today was spent outside being staff at an outdoor storytime. It wasn't too hot, though, and we got in before it got really hot. Somewhere soon the heat wave is supposed to break. It'd be nice if that were sooner rather than later, though.
Rat neuron clumps teaching people more about their brains. We don't have rat AI yet, or even necessarily something that would pass for rat intelligence, but progress continues.
"Internet is Tubes" Senator trying to get a bill passed while nobody's looking. Some of those sections, especially the "protection" ones, look downright insidious.
Beep Baseball - a way of playing the game that levels the playing field for everyone. And might teach us all a thing or two about how much we rely on sight to get around in the world.
The world is currently struggling with people preaching a radical religious message - Christian or Muslim, the problems are the same. The question is whether or not saner heads are able to prevail before irreversible options are used.
Another sterling example of the Zero Tolerance philosophy. Mixed with a strong unwillingness to actually find anything out, and you get kids being arrested and held in a cell because they were breaking a few loose branches to build a treehouse. Over-reaction upon over-reaction. Ludicrous.
Anyway, off to bed, where sleeping without a blanket is probably a good idea.

Date: 2006-08-03 12:38 pm (UTC)you know, I wouldn't put something like that past Sen. Steven's. i just hope the other folks are smart and relize what they are voting on.
Ok, and what the heck kind of point did it serve for arresting kids for being kids and playing? The kids are all traumatized about it. I can understand someone calling the police and complaining about the kids, but I see no reason to arrest them and stick them in a jail cell. If they really wanted to, they should have just taken the kids into the station and made them sit in the waiting room for their parents. If the police were aiming to use those kids as an example, well, I'm sure those three kids are NEVER going to want to play in a tree again. Quote from the article - Superintendent Stuart Johnson, operations manager at Halesowen police station, said: 'I support the actions of my officers who responded to complaints from the public about "kids destroying" an ornamental cherry tree by stripping every branch from it, in an area where there have been reports of anti-social behaviour.. The thing is, that's a lie. The kids didn't strip every branch, they removed the DEAD ONES, something that a township maintenance person ought to have done. I even could have seen arresting the kids if they had stolen something, or were beating someone up....but for climbing a tree? Sheesh, don't the police have better things to do?
