Another day in my life
Nov. 13th, 2006 10:44 pmI got sent into a timewarp today, linked to a Rescue Rangers fancomic "Of Mice And Mayhem", which was fantastic. It deals with more mature themes, but it probably wouldn’t warrant a rating above teen. It’s always interesting to see and speculate on what might have happened if our kids shows were permitted to move beyond their G-rated boundaries. I almost wonder whether those shows might have had a longer life simply by growing up with their generation.
Another reason to not be fond of Wal-Mart. It drives out competitors, and because it’s such a giant, and uncompromising on its practices, Wal-Mart drives its own suppliers out of business.
The morgues in Baghdad are full. The deaths are happening so fast that that morgues can’t hold them. That’s not the figure of Americans we’re talking about - that’s the Iraqis. It’d be an interesting statistic to keep track of. Maybe that would help the populace realize what a mistake was made by going in without proper support. Mr. V went about the District of Columbia serving Redress of Grievances papers, so perhaps we’ll get some responses? We’ll see. We are reminded that Democrats can be conservatives, too, and they may continue things on their present course, all the while proclaiming how different things are. Hold them to their actions. On that note, the Democrats are set to start with the subpoenas. So maybe we can finally learn the truth? (Or will they say we can’t handle it?)
Global warming might make ancient cities other than Atlantis disappear beneath the waves. Which will make Dr. Jones very unhappy. Along with all the archaeologists who did get their tenures.
Something for
yarha to look after: Waltzing may help with avoiding a second heart attack and recover from the first one. There’s something you don’t see every day.
Protein folding mapped at atomic level. Perhaps this will help the World Community Grid project?
Last pairing for tonight tickles my musical self - a shirt that lets you wail air guitar... and actually sends the output through your speakers. This might have the unintended effect of getting people to stop with the air guitar. OR it might make them worse. Who knows? On that note (har, har), it’s true: You don't need to be able to play the drums, or the piano, to make music. (media file) Just good at splicing.

Date: 2006-11-14 01:31 pm (UTC)Thanks! I'm hoping it will help avoid a *first* heart attack. :) Oh, I knew dance was healthy. For one thing, it doesn't stress the body as much as, say, jogging. As the article says, it's fun. Unlike working out, which is just a pain, as 'twere.
Also, as anyone who's ever been on a crowded dance floor knows, dancing keeps you mentally agile as you avoid close encounters with other couples. It's sort of a cross between aerobics and a video game.

Date: 2006-11-14 04:10 pm (UTC)I sort of feel that wal-mart has no sense of business, it's more of a "YOU DO WHAT WE WANT OR YOUR TOAST"
And Levi designing a whole new line JUST to sell at Wal-Mart? Isn't that going to "cheapen" Levi's image? I mean, I recall having German exchange kids (in 1995) dropping USD$50 per pair of Levi's for every member of their family and all their friends back home because they didn't HAVE Levi's. Making Levi's half that just to sell them at WM? Seems a bit dumb, to me, Especially if they had to come up with a new line to market at WM.
Reading the bit about foreign suppliers for clothing..I thought WM's whole thing was "American Made"? i thought the Faded Glory brand (and all their brands) were made in the US? i thought that was wal-mart's great gimmick...that thier stuff was all made in the US?
That article needs to get out to everyone who thinks wal-mart is the greatest thing since sliced bread. sure, they have cheap prices, but at what cost to other businesses?

Date: 2006-11-25 08:21 pm (UTC)If Wal-Mart is harmful to a supplier, then that supplier can simply stop using Wal-Mart as a retailer. If they don't stop because can't survive without Wal-Mart, then they're probably doomed anyway. Unless Wal-Mart is actually--
Hmm. Actually, the 'do this or we pull even existing profitable products of yours', which hurts Wal-Mart as well, could be frowned upon. Increases political power while decreasing economic efficiency. Even so, if the supplier can't survive economically without Wal-Mart, it's living on borrowed time in any case.
I am curious, though, about what happened to 'The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co.': the article throws out the name and the situation, but never follows through; it never explains the significance, or rather fails to explain what happened, and what this means for the present situation. In fact, the reference seems to be just a random fact that a researcher came up with and stuck into the article without any further thought about the implications at all. Disappointing. What happened to them, and could this foreshadow what will happen to Wal-Mart?
