silveradeptSo I did a kernel upgrade today, and wouldn’t you know it - it borked my X configuration. Because, as best I can tell, it didn’t actually download the restricted-modules part of the kernel upgrade. Bit of a problem, that, since the nVidia graphics drivers apparently depend on that. So. After a quick reconfigure that got me in, I got the right bits and was back to the correct and glorious resolution. I really hope this doesn’t happen every single time I do a kernel upgrade. It’ll just be annoying. Luckily, things are okay. I tested, then submitted, my Rails app, worked a bit on the searching lab, then went to class, where I turned in the big paper. All in all, a good day to get work done. I’m still not sure my searching lab will be anywhere near correct, but really, since “correct” is somewhat nebulous, and we’re not expected to be perfect, I suppose I can live with not knowing whether I’m doing anything right until after the fact.
The mid-semester break is in two weeks. That’s weird. I suspect a lot of it will be spent in the bowels of Rails coding to try and get a leg or five up on project code releases. While juggling group work, individual assignments, and the stuff that comes with graduate work. Oh, and there’s supposed to be a job hunt in there, too, isn’t there? Well, maybe over the break, I’ll do some of that, too. I dunno. I’ll figure it out. I still have three months after I graduate to go full-bore job hunting anyway, if I can’t find something while still here.
As things are... (looks at a schedule), I think I’m down for Anime Central, at the very least. It’s close enough to graduation to make a fudge on and ask if I can start late for. May be the last one I attend, too, depending on where I find work.

The Biggest Lego Set (Currently) does point-five past lightspeed. And tends to drop cargo when Imperial cruisers are around.
Before they were presidents, the presidents often looked remarkably different. Probably because our presidents tend to be elected in the older parts of their lives. Anyway, here’s a young Eishenower, Jerry Ford in his football wear, Eisenhower playing some football himself, and what has recently been determined to be a daguerreotype of President Lincoln. I think the point I’m trying to make here is that if you judge people by what they look like, at any point in their lives, the best you’re going to be doing is grasping at straws or making big mistakes. Which is why politics should not be a popularity contest.
Some of the anecdotes that come out of judgment, though, often rendered after “removing all doubt” are fun to read. Witness a suggestion by a University of Michigan student that wishes the girls in his psychology courses would be less concerned with their whirlwind lives and fashion choices while in class. I’m not much of a fan of the fashionable things some sorority girls do, like putting their letters on the butt of their pants, or Ugg boots. If the conversation really is that vapid, I can understand why the poster would want to tear his hair.
Going from possibly being full of too much air to none at all, Salon recounts a mission to hand out soccer balls that was a bust - because the balls weren't inflated, nor was there the equipment with the balls to inflate them. But the soccer balls got passed out anyway, apparently, and so the appreciation shown from the Army was given back to them in equal spirit.
Displaying a bit more humor, the Pentagon chief responded to Putin's accusations that U.S. policy is only aggravating rather than solving by sayind "One Cold War was quite enough", and scheduling a visit to Russia to defuse the tensions.
The U.S. military in Afghanistan admits to shooting artillery rounds into Pakistan in self-defense. Which could be a problem, because, officially, Pakistan handles Pakistani problems, and coalition forces are not allowed to shoot across the line. I suspect this is a lot of grey area stuff, and that it’s not entirely clear who or what is going on. And since borders only really exist on a political map, it’s quite possible the firing across wasn’t known or told when it happened. (A side note: On par, it sounds like Afghanistan is doing better than Iraq is. I wonder why.)
Working on something that could be a lot stranger, the U.S. says that Iranian munitions are killing coalition soliders. Have a look at the picture, though. The date is in Gregorian time. Iran doesn’t do Gregorian time. So that’s rather weird. It might be something else, with the military helpfully overlaying in large letters what they’ve deduced about the weapon, if the object itself is clean of markings. The link I got it from wanted to use the wrong calendar to suggest that the U.S. was running propaganda on the matter. Me? I wonder what’s going on here.
Ah, bedtime. Maybe I’ll read a little of V before bed. I met my match in the Earth Defense Force’s Cyborg specialist. That he’s about fourteen levels above me is probably a good indication that I need to do some training.

I can't help but think that if it were real, or the evidence more credible, then they'd just hold a press conference and do it up brown. If one were of a paranoid mind though, one might notice an upswing lately of suggestions that Iran is trying to get us. I’ve already read that the reason so many helicopters went down is that the Iranians have been giving new weapons to the insurgents. Likewise, I’ve also seen someone claim that the US forces shot them down themselves to make it look like the Iranians. I must add, for the sake of completion, the person who claimed the later also claimed his dog was giving him the Pope’s Vegetarian chili recipes via radio transmissions.

(Personally, I was more amused by President Bush's speech where, with no apparent sense of irony, he declared that the citizens of Iran were honourable, but their leader was a power-mad and belligerent. No, I can't think of anyone else who that applies to...)

Are Ugg boots the suede boots with the fur on top? They do look sort of ugly, but they also look pretty warm.
