The additional moving help is arriving tomorrow morning. By midday, or at the very least, the end of the day, I should be moved out of my room and back to home base. From there, there’s going to be a lot of sorting, evaluating, and deciding just what has to go with me in limited space available. Wednesday morning, I believe, is the day that I will set out on my journey to the west. So there is likely to be an interruption of link services until a dwelling has been established, items are moved in, and some sort of Internet access is available for my use. I’m sure you will all be able to amuse yourselves and find interesting things to pass around. Anything that’s actually important and that I should respond to should be delivered to my e-mail box. It may take a long time before I get any sort of caught up on Livejournal, and I may decide to declare that particular time a dead zone until I have a day or three to catch up on it. Or I may just declare it a bankruptcy and not care. (Riiight. I’m obsessed, I know it. I just won’t have any sort of computer to access things with while on the trip.)

Anyway, tonight is the last night I sleep here. Another era comes to a close, or something like that. We’ll start tonight’s links from the Odd Things department, which has a wikihow of transforming a hot-air popcorn popper into a coffee roaster.

The difficulty of having no insurance is pretty well exemplified by the South African man who was shot, went to get treatment, received painkillers, and was told to walk it off. If he could have afforded the bills, of course, the bullet would likely have been removed. Note that this happened in South Africa, but I can see where someone might try to walk it off here in the United States because, while the doctors will probably treat someone, the bills will kill them more surely than the bullet. In the war zone, the armed forces are exhausted, physically and mentally. Long tours, repeat tours, almost no downtime, the constant fear and the undefined opponent are taking their toll on the military. Army suicides are growing higher. And draft rumors continue to circulate, as a possible solution to the fatigue and shortfalls that the armed forces are experiencing. American Samidzat collects some opinions on the matter of the armed forces and their war zones.

Fox's attempt at satirical humor fails after one season. As I can see from everyone’s stunned faces, this was a totally unexpected outcome. *yawn*. Something that’s definitely more worth looking at is pro-life persons answering the question "How much time should a woman serve for an abortion" with "Punish the doctor" The woman doesn’t figure into it, other than as an addled, not-in-her-right-mind victim of a bad decision. Only the medical professional doing the procedure gets punished. I suppose this fits into a worldview where women are always subservient and not actually thought of as people, but I don’t think the majority of the pro-life movement would think like that. Either that, or I’ve really misjudged the pro-life movement. Americablog takes similar whacks at this mental disconnect. The General also makes mention that even "moderates" and females these days may be willing to give up their choice in his usual manner.

A lot of mental detritus passes around the Internet in the way of forwards, passing from one e-mail box to another, perhaps read, and occasionally forwarded on, depending on the subject matter. A Blogspot user has decided to collect much of this jetsam and see things from beneath the trenches and in the sewers. My Right-Wing Dad chronicles forwards with a conservative agenda in mind. I’m pretty sure there’s plenty of material floating about in the ether that’s not conservative-minded. Had this been during the Clinton presidency, there might very well have been/be a site devoted to those kinds of forwards. So put on your gas masks and air filtration systems, and open up the grate to peer in on these things.

Last for tonight is something really, really, cool. A star is zipping through the universe at such a rate that it has bowshock, dropping off material along the way. The tail is 13 light-years long. And it makes for a sweet image, too.

So, to bed, then.

Good luck tomorrow. Odd to think that the next time I visit you, not only will I have to fly out, but I'll be hopping a few time zones.

Wow.

I think *I'm* going to miss visiting you in Ann Arbor :)

I'll post your wherabouts next week to my LJ after I hear from you, so people know you aren't dead and all.

Sorry about the lack of a laptop. I tried to give you the POS, I think. (Ha, I could probably mail it...)

This is gonna be weird to me as well. However, I have confirmed with Saint Beth a party for you @ their place 5pm on 8/18. Here's to seeing you there and more than three people showing up.
