Partied until the farmer came home - 18 August 2007

Spent the morning/afternoon picking out which boxes are mine here at home. Tomorrow, after my landlord arrives and does his walkaraound, and I snag the mattress/box spring combination, my box fan, and the remaining power strip still in my room, I’ll be home, most likely sorting through what I packed from Ann Arbor and making decisions regarding essentialness of what’s there. Hopefully, by Tuesday night, it will all be taken care of, I’ll have a security deposit, I’ll turn in my change of address (part 1), and then Wednesday morning, the road trip begins. That should be interesting to see, that’s for sure. Routes are being planned and compared.

Beyond that, someone is claiming that the mysterious Poe grave visitor was a publicity stunt the tour guides for the cemetery and grave thought up. Although, even if it started as a stunt, that doesn’t mean necessarily that someone else isn’t also taking the idea and running with it.

The Daily Mail has a small piece on how love can conquer all, even the knowledge that the man you fell in love with was a POW of "the enemy". Seventy years of marriage later, the couple is still doing well. Things haven’t fared so well for a Canadian widow unable to access her United States-held finances because she lives in Cuba.

On other fronts, a Common Dreams writer, Olga Bonfglio, claims that the Lions are running roughshod over the Christians. And that the Lions think they have God on their side. Which always makes for entertaining dinner conversation, I’m sure. Have a look at the Family Research Council's "Recess Homework" of issues for people to call their elected officials over. Although, if bradhicks is right, then homosexuals should have a right to marry within our lifetime, once the PR campaign about the people, and especially the children, being hurt by not permitting the parent figures to be partnered. The sodomy laws have fallen, so now they can have sex with each other. It should be only a matter of time before they’re allowed to marry and raise a family together.

Not all the sodomy laws have fallen, unless someone didn't send me the memo. There are lots of sodomy laws on the books in many states, including mine.

Well, they're not being enforced, thanks to Lawrence v. Texas, I believe. They're still there, sure, and there are rumblings that if that decision gets overturned, then they're going to go back and start enforcing them, but I don't think that's going to happen any time soon. Unless Roe gets overturned. Then I'm going to start worrying about the rest of them.

I thought some of them were still being enforced? Not in a peeping through windows kind of thing, but I thought that if you somehow get the police called on you and you're engaging in something that was technically on the books as being illegal, you still got in trouble?

You still could, but anyone who wanted to prosecute it before a judge would have to explain why they were flouting the precedent set by the Supreme Court regarding those laws, if they weren't specifically trying to prosecute under a law that had been declared unconstitutional or voided. In a sense, just the arrest, if publicized enough, could be damaging to someone's reputation (viz, arrests/convictions that put you on a registered sex offender list) even if it were under a law that had been struck down.

I just recall something about a couple in VA getting arrested because someone could see into their hotel room window and they were doing something "illegal".

Well, in that particular case, it would be like looking through a bank window from a street and seeing someone holding up the bank. While things that are illegal are illegal wherever done, "illegal" things that someone might prosecute out of spite or intimidation, despite Court precedent, would have a much better chance of being thrown out, so long as one could demonstrate that things were done in a private area and that there were no means by which a citizen or law enforcement officer could observe the "illegal" action taking place, like an open window.

I can walk naked through my house, so long as there's no open windows, curtains, or other means by which a member on public ground can view my nakedness. If they can, there's a good chance a cite for indecent exposure will be following, especially if I like to walk naked in my house with the curtains open often. If I keep the curtains closed so that my nosy neighbor can't see me strutting around without physically being present in my private domain, no citation. Same thing for things like sodomy laws.

I still think it's a rotten thing to get in trouble for something that's being done in your own home, but then again, that also would mean ANYTHING illegal would be legal if you do it in your own home by those standards.

do you want me to research out another possible route? I mean, I honestly sat and compared them, and I prefer the route I gave you, but If you personally need another one to look at...I can do that.

*nods* by large packet, I meant the emailed file. All I sent was that small box with the DVDs, anything else I have for you is housewarming stuff and I plan on just waiting until you have a real address to mail it to...mostly so you didn't have to schlep it on your own.
