A passing thought for all of you.
Oct. 9th, 2007 08:29 amIn the form of a poll, since it is your opinion I’m soliciting. By self-aware, I mean something more akin to the Greek definition of "Know thyself", beyond simple awareness of the existence of self to a more complete understanding of the person that you are. You can take that as knowing your own mind inside and out to the point where nothing you do or feel surprises you, or knowing the conception of self as an artificial limitation on the inherent divinity/oneness of everyone, or the knowledge of self as an obstacle on the way to finding the Tao. More than just knowing about "I", this is aiming for a deeper understanding of what "I" is.

If one wishes, one can expound to the various degrees by which the statement fits all the criteria listed above, but at the very least, please leave your reasoning in the comments. (Didn’t want to put that as part of the poll, because there’s an arbitrary limit on characters, I believe)
Yes, that last segment is stealing majorly from
greyweirdo, but hopefully, there are lots of questions, most of which will be answered and one which may form the basis for the next poll. And there are no restrictions on what question you can ask.

Date: 2007-10-09 04:10 pm (UTC)It seems to me that by definition somebody who is self-aware knows him or herself, and thus must know that he or she is self aware. Therefore the statement must be false. But as you fail to define "self-aware" the statement is also meaningless. Self awareness can mean anything from the simple ability to recognize self as separate from others, something which many animals are capable of doing, to the complete understanding of exactly what makes you, as an individual, tick, which humanity just plain doesn't have because we don't know enough about how our own minds work.
