Going quickly - watched opening ceremonies, quite the production. Hoping the games have a similar sort of high quality.

Internationally, Russia has invaded Georgia, taking the tense relations between the two countries to the military level. The United States is officially doing nothing about the matter at the moment (as if they could send troops in or take some other military action...)

A retired four-star general suggests that Senator McCain's hundred years comment may be more appropriate to Afghanistan.

Phelps followers enter Canada to protest a funeral, despite rules barring people from entering who only intend on causing social disruption. It sounds good, considering it's a group I'm not fond of, but I'm not sure about the precedent, if things get worse.

A quick Olympics thing, of a sort of interest - for Olympic baseball, inning 11 will resemble softball, with two runners on and the ability to start anywhere in the order.

Domestically, all sorts of strange stuff - a satirical piece about the top 9 best new "drugs" introduced recently.

More seriously, significant suspicions about the government's case against Bruce Ivins, including several alternate theories that would exonerate Mr. Ivins.

Police break into a person's house, shoot the dogs, and threaten the man inside on drug charges, because he brought a package inside addressed to him. Oh, did we mention he's the mayor?. For a while, the police didn't rule him out, but eventually, they cleared the mayor. No apologies for the way the raid was conducted, though.

The secretary of state of Ohio is suing Diebold/Premier Election Solutions for damages because the machines don't work, and haven't worked for a while now. The SoS also ensures that there are safeguards in place to make sure that if the machines should malfunction again, there won't be disputed results.

I think I got away from Michigan just in time, considering the mayor of Detroit is being charged with felonies, after spending some time in jail on other charges.

John Edwards admits to having an affair, denies that he fathered a child through it. As [livejournal.com profile] bradhicks points out, though, it only seems to be news when a Democrat admits to something like this.

The Slacktivist has two posts about the McCain campaign's attempt to make Barack Obama into the Antichrist, the first, about the person who made the ad, did his best to make sure that the message got through, and now has to deny that he intended exactly what he intended, and the second, pointing out that even the guys who did Left Behind picked up on the signals, so that worked... but there's no other message for the people who don't believe in the Left Behind end of days.

Last for this sequence, the ten best battle cries, including Klingons, Prince Adam, and testicular shooting. Best when paired with giant wooden sci-fi sculptures. And possibly data about Britney Spears getting a role in a Quentin Tarantino film.
