ood day. It's been a bit silent around here, as our free time has been severely curtailed. Life Intrudes, as it were. We exist, but updates may be sporadic. The good thing is, we apparently sailed through another LJ DDoS while we were having our free time consumed elsewhere.

The first report from UN Women says the state of women in the world is... not pretty at all.

The reason everyone should be following the News of the World scandal for as far as it goes is because the Murdoch media empire reaches everywhere and plays a significant role in your politics, wherever you are. As the roots are uncovered, subpoenas from the United States have been issued for possible News Corp hacking into United States phones. One of the potentially good and bad things about the Murdoch Empire is that they keep documentation of their actions...including the illegal ones, apparently. And then there's the political repercussions - MPs, including the Prime Minister, are now entangled in the scandal and may potentially be linked to the scandl through their selection of advisors that were previously with the Murdoch Empire. Finally, a hat tip to those staff at The Guardian that kept up with the investigation into the News of the World, even as all the (corrupted) officials around them weren&apos:t listening, and a timeline to keep everything straight.

After an attack in Norway by a right-wing extremist that killed at least 92 people, an attack consisting of a bombing in Oslo and a shooting at a youth camp, but before people knew it was a right-wing extremist, several papers immediately pointed to Muslims as the likely culprit, and worse, have equated terrorism with "stuff Muslims we don't like do", instead of "stuff intended to terrorize civilians and make them afraid". With that convenient definition, then the actions of a nation-state can never be terrorism, even if they fit the real definition. Not only is that carrying propaganda water for governments... the idea that All Terrorists Are Muslims is almost always false. And then we find out that the Pentagon is looking to counteract propaganda on social networks...so that the media networks propaganda goes through?

The media is also carrying propaganda for the rich and powerful, as now it is revealed that the accuser of Dominique Strauss-Kahn is not in fact a money-grubbing whore but an actual victim of a crime. You know, the original story that came out and was then aggressively quashed with complicity from the media.

A Catholic bishop in Ohio has forbidden his congregants from donating to the Susan G. Komen foundation, because he believes they will start stem cell research in the future in contravention of Catholic beliefs.

Finally, ware the chilly environment, the one that subtly discourages participation from women by making the men seem more valuable, and for which many of the fixes are of the same sort of "What to do when [X minority] points out you're acting like a privileged git." Which is pretty much what happens in those chilly environments.

Domestically, President Obama is still unwilling to call a spade a spade, or to set a hard line on his own requirements to make a deal on the debt ceiling. Nor are corporations actually doing anything to hire people - actually, they're still laying people off as to increase their own profits.

There'a another problem that could use some work, and that might be chipped away at using the ballot box here and there. The removal of the American police state, where the police are basically immunized from the consequences of their actions, train and act as an unofficial military, can hopefully be set on its way through electiong officials that are willing to dismantle those special police powers. Then, maybe, we'll stop having incidents where the cop tells someone to shut up, and then blames him for not telling the officer about his concealed weapon permit, saying that he should have killed the driver where he stood.

The Speaker of the House would desperately like a vote on the debt limit. Too bad the House rank-and-file don't and are quite willing to sink the whole thing to spite everyone.

Finally, the Walter Reed hospital is closing down its current building, to reopen as a multi-building complex.

In technology, the weight of a suit of armor, and the stamina required to fight in it, may have been responsible for the outcome of several battles, like the English winning Agincourt with less numbers. The biggest drain on effectiveness is in the leg armor, which might suggest why mounted fighters and plate armor goes together. Even better, a significant amount of data on soldiers and their work in the medieval period has gone on-line.

The media cabals continue to try to suppres and bury studies that indicate those who share files also tend to buy more of those items from a legitimate source. Strange that one might buy things one knows are good, rather than spinning a roulette wheel on many unknowns.

And with that disjointed remarks, off we go.
