/dev/random: Grump, grump

Because it is apparently keeping me awake at the moment, here's a thing that's made me grumpy:

For the previous two mornings, as I have been driving early, two different cars have overtaken and passed me while I was approaching the speed limit. They chose to do so by crossing over a double yellow line to do so, which is very illegal in the States.

I would not normally be grumpy about the overtaking. But this double yellow lines are usually in place because it is unsafe to overtake someone at that spot, often because visibility is limited enough that someone would not be able to react to the presence of a vehicle in the oncoming lane that wasn't there when they started the maneuver.

So I'm grumpy about it, because if either of those cars had caused a near miss, I would be angry, if they had caused a collision, I would be furious, and I would be incandescent with rage if that collision involved my vehicle in any way at all.

Two different cars in the same spot on successive days. I get that people are in a hurry, but they're usually more sensible than that.

I have a 2015 Subaru Crosstrek, which had their EyeSight system with optically-tracked adaptive cruise control. I CAN'T WAIT until that's a standard feature on every car, but even then there will be idiots who think they drive better without it. Once you're outside of town, the first passing zone isn't until you're about 3 miles down the mountain. That one is fairly long, off and on for about half a mile. There are three more passing zones until you get to the tunnel that's about half way down the mountain. Then nothing for five miles.

Yeah, I know your story well. The entire mountain is a safety corridor, so double fines all the way. I've only gotten one speeding ticket in the 13 years that I've been up here, I set my cruise control to no more than 5 over the limit and my ticket was pure negligence. It's amazing how fast people will blast past me, and then get caught in the meanders past the tunnel and end up no further past me once we're out of the mountains.

I learned a long time ago that going faster doesn't get you there much quicker. If you're running late, then you need to leave earlier, not drive faster. Rates right up there with 'adding programmers to a late project makes it later.'

Yeah. If I'm in a hurry, I will always it all the red lights and the drivers who are doing deliberately slower driving. When I get to the part where I'm just rar! about it, that's my own stress talking rather than anything else.
