- Learning To Live Again, Together (2342 words)
Fandom: Final Fantasy XIII Series
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Lightning/Oerba Dia Vanille/Oerba Yun Fang, Hope Estheim/Snow Villiers, Hope Estheim/Sazh Katzroy/Lightning/Oerba Dia Vanille/Oerba Yun Fang/Snow Villiers
Characters: Lightning (Final Fantasy XIII), Oerba Yun Fang, Oerba Dia Vanille, Hope Estheim, Sazh Katzroy, Snow Villiers
Additional Tags: Adult Hope, Domestic...and not, Hope's Got a Crush
Summary: There's still a lot more to do after the fall of Cocoon. And they've been together this long, so why not stay together a little longer? There's still kids to be raised, food to be had, people to be saved. It's the little things that keep them together. And infuriate them.Holly Poly for this year, and continuing in the vein of writing for a specific person repeatedly, although this time in a different fandom than the one they had requested the two previous times. I remember struggling with some of this, but I think that's because I hadn't really figured out how to include Sazh and Hope all that well. Lightning, Fang, and Vanille are a pretty boss OT3, and Lightning is antagonistic to Snow. But it worked all the way through, and the recipient was happy with it.
- Welcome to Oswin's (1729 words)
Fandom: Star Trek: Discovery, Doctor Who (2005)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Clara Oswin Oswald/Sylvia Tilly
Characters: Clara Oswin Oswald, Sylvia Tilly, Ashildr | Lady Me
Summary: Tilly finds the diner retro and Oswin pretty. And says so out loud before any filter engages, leaving Clara to decide how she wants to reciprocate, if at all. This one went over a lot better, and part of it is because I love the fact that Tilly (at least through Season One) is a walking narrator and does so out loud. It's the sort of thing that I would do if there weren't so many strange looks that you get when you're talking out loud about the things you're doing and feeling and there aren't the people around who would be interested in those things. Plus, I like Oswin-Clara and all the subtle mischief she can get up to with a TARDIS that looks like (and runs like) a diner.
- The Women's Weyr (1833 words)
Fandom: Dragonriders of Pern - Anne McCaffrey
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Brekke & Wirenth (Dragonriders of Pern), Brekke & Mirrim (Dragonriders of Pern)
Characters: Brekke (Dragonriders of Pern), Mirrim (Dragonriders of Pern), Wirenth (Dragonriders of Pern), F'lar | Fallarnon, Lessa (Dragonriders of Pern)
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Alternate Universe - Wirenth Lives
Summary: Running a Weyr is difficult. It's not that Brekke doesn't have plenty of competent help, it's that she has Benden breathing down her neck trying to get her to change what she's built into something more...traditional.The Dragonriders of Pern and I have a love-hate relationship with each other. It was one of my earliest fandoms, but it's exceedingly clear that the Suck Fairy can finance several other operations from the revenue they get from being the slumlord of Pern. The ongoing giving of grief is a way of trying to reconcile those two things, I suppose - to point out where everything went wrong as a way of trying to show the world that I desperately wanted to be there. It also makes me both entirely qualified and mostly unwilling to write fic of it, because I would have to adjust so much of it that someone who wanted an uncritical experience of it would probably find me crossing one or more of their DNWs.
In that regard, though, this particular prompt came up and was one that I felt I could write properly, because baked into it was "undo one of the greatest wrongs done a character in Pern," and that I am entirely able to do. It did reasonably well for the audience and collected a significant number of kudos, which suggests there's an audience out there for this kind of fic. (And it was really nice to be able to imagine what Southern Weyr might have become if the narrative hadn't insisted on a different path.)
- Marinette Special (400 words)
Fandom: Miraculous Ladybug
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Adrien Agreste | Chat Noir, Alya Césaire
Additional Tags: Quadruple Drabble
Summary: Adrien asks Alya what constitutes a "Marinette Special" before demonstrating he already knows.I did this as a Fandom Stocking fill, I think, and then the recipient encouraged me to post it to a wider audience. And it picked up a fair share of kudos in a hurry. It was certainly the fastest to 50 kudos, but I think that's more a function of the fact that the Miraculous Ladybug fandom is pretty big, and so getting something up to 50 is just having someone show it around enough.
Miraculous Ladybug is definitely a canon that I'm starting to have the same sorts of thoughts about as I am Pern. There's a better story lurking underneath what we're seeing, if the showrunners would be willing to think through and show the consequences of the actions that characters are taking. This, however, is just a bit of fluff to fill a stocking.
- Here, A Thought Comes (1229 words)
Fandom: Steven Universe (Cartoon)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Connie Maheswaran & Steven Universe
Characters: Connie Maheswaran, Steven Universe, Stevonnie (Steven Universe)
Additional Tags: Fusion Headspace, Post-Episode: s05e18 A Single Pale Rose, Spoilers, Season/Series 05 Spoilers
Summary: Stevonnie's headspace is not at serene as they need it to be. Connie tries to convince Steven that the way he's approaching all of their problems isn't healthy for the fusion or for Steven and Connie individually.Steven Universe is another big fandom, but I've been spending a lot of time just getting through the canonical material. There's a large contingent of the fandom that I've been staying away from because they seem to be more about condemnation and ship wars than celebrating the good things about the canon. But I got a really good fragment of poetry for this prompt, and Stevonnie was the first thing I thought of, and the shared headspace that happened in "Here Comes A Thought" and the surrounding episode.
Steven Universe is also one of the shows that shows a lot more of consequences of actions than others do, and shows how highly traumatizing it is to everyone, Steven included, to have to make these decisions and live with their consequences. It's also ery good about having family and friends there to help you through the tough times, so that's what happened here, as well. Connie trying to convince Steven that he really shouldn't go it alone.
- The Beach City Problem (1814 words)
Fandom: Steven Universe (Cartoon)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Original Human Character(s)
Additional Tags: Worldbuilding, movie review, Transcripts, Government Conspiracy
Summary: Two transcripts and a movie review, recently obtained, that hint that the government has always known about the Crystal Gems...and has tried their best to make sure the rest of us just think it's Beach City being Weird. And then there's this, which is just great. The recipient asked for more about Gems and Beach City and wondered if there were government conspiracies to cover up the presence of the Gems, and this idea of transcripts and cover stories came out pretty quickly. (It probably also helped that I was listening to Bag Man, a podcast about how Spiro Agnew was a corrupt motherfucker and the prosecutors that convinced him to get out before he could become President when Nixon was going to resign.) I thought it was great, and I also really enjoyed getting to portray the President in Steven Universe's universe as nonbinary.
- Legendary Shipping (1970 words)
Fandom: Original Work
Rating: General Audiences

Relationships: Ancient Immortal Excited About the Internet & Her Human Online Friends
Characters: Ancient Immortal Excited About the Internet
Summary: They used to be scared of her. She thought she might be able to make them scared again. But the people of this era are less easily scared. Instead, they seemed fascinated to hear about things that would have frightened them. And then there's this, which I had an idea for when I was signing up, and so when I got this prompt, I was glad to be able to get to write it. It's a simple premise - what does an immortal who is just discovering the Internet do when she finds out there are still websites devoted to keeping her memory alive? And furthermore, what happens when she encounters what seems to be new stories of her (that are really just, RPF(ish) of her and someone else beyond the void) that people are writing.
It's one of those pieces where I get to talk about fandom from an outsider's perspective (being written by someone who is fandom-adjacent). It was a lot of fun to do, and I'm very glad my recipient enjoyed it.

Series: Part 1 of The Heart of the Miraculous
Summary: Dreams herald changes to Ladybug and Chat Noir, who discover new depths to their Miraculous Keyblades as Hawk Moth and his allies step up attacks and bring new foes to contend with. The struggle between Light and Darkness begins in earnest on another world. And then I did this. A more than 20,000 word fic that was the first part of something. And it's been seen, but not much kudoed, commented on, or bookmarked, so I guess my thought that there might be a small audience that would be interested in seeing how the Kingdom Hearts and Miraculous Ladybug universes would work together was off about how small it actually was. Also, that's a lot bigger work than I usually do. It started with a single idea - "What if Nathalie's surname was more than just an interesting joke?" and has exploded from there. I still have a few more things to do on the sequel work before it's done. And even then, it threatens me with the idea that there might still be more stories to be told in this particular crossover. I suppose the best thing about it is that I wrote it for myself to get the idea out of my head, and therefore any comments or kudos on it are good comments and kudos?
- Wedding Preparations (1838 words)
Fandom: Thor's Wedding (Edda - Snorri Sturluson)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Loki & Thor
Characters: Loki (Norse Religion & Lore), Þórr | Thor (Norse Religion & Lore), Þrymr | Thrym (Norse Religion & Lore)
Additional Tags: Thrym is a dudebro in all the worst ways, Loki enjoys coded language, Genderbent Thor and Loki, Genderbending, Gendered Expectations, Misogyny
Summary: Thor doesn't want to go to her wedding. Loki tries to shepherd her as best she can until they can both get to the good part.I really like Thor's Wedding as a story, because it's in the best traditions of gender fuckery, a strong theme of which runs through the entirety of the Norse (and many other) myths. So I came up with two versions of how things might go, and this one, which is the one that I used to fulfill the assignment, I decided instead of it being "let's get Thor to cross-drees", it would be "Thor is the baddest bitch around and this performative femininity bullshit is not her thing." And then ther's Loki, who is absolutely enjoying herself the entire time, poking and needling and otherwise delighting in how this whole grand trick plays out.
- The Game Begins Again (1443 words)

Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Loki & Thor
Characters: Þórr | Thor (Norse Religion & Lore), Freyja | Freya (Norse Religion & Lore), Loki (Norse Religion & Lore)
Summary: When Thor wakes up, his hammer is missing. Loki wants to play, but Thor is not necessarily on board with the game this time. This was the ultimately discarded start to a different version where Thor is rather reluctantly dragged along into all of this, because Loki is trying to cheer him up from his sadness and things get a lot out of hand. It probably would have ended with lots of smashing and a little bit of thrill from Thor about being able to put the hurt on so effectively, but it was probably going to take a long time to get there, and after I'd written this first part, I hit a roadblock and wasn't sure how to get around it. So I shelved that draft and wrote the other one instead.

Characters: Lonely Golem who can't build himself friends
Additional Tags: Post-Apocalypse, Found Family
Summary: After the latest failure, a Golem gets wrapped up in the affairs of the survivors when it turns out the language of the creators didn't die when they left.Original Works fests on AO3 often bring out the most interesting ideas. Many of them are strange, most are delightful, and they always exercise my brain in different ways than in writing more traditional fic. They're a neat check-in for my own brain to produce something based on a single sentence or two, with no real constraints on where it goes other than it has to make wordcount and get turned in on time. (And not cross someone's DNWs.) I like the sort of things that my brain can come up with when given that kind of flexibility.
- Organizing the Library (2368 words)
Fandom: Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Beast/Belle (Disney)
Characters: Belle (Disney), Beast (Disney), Lumiere (Disney)
Additional Tags: Fluff about Smut
Summary: Belle has embarked on the task of organizing the Beast's library. He wants to help her succeed, and then realizes that some of the volumes may not be fit for a lady he wants to woo.One of the nice things about transformative works is the amount of playing-around you get to do with canon. For a property like a Disney film, where only things suitable for general audiences would be shown, there's a lot of space where you can make things far more realistic. And so I figured that Belle, while she was captive, would want to reorganize the library to suit her tastes, and that the Beast would only belatedly realize that the library contains porn, both in words and drawings, and rush to try and get rid of it before she noticed, lest she think of him as just like every other man she's encountered and sink his chances of love right before they run out of time to break the enchantment. It makes for a certain amount of comedy where the aristocrat gets to be on the receiving end of the humor. Plus, I got to sneak in more than a few jokes about librarians and organizing books.

Summary: Chat, chilling, taking selfies and admiring the cosplayers at convention, where he's one Chat among many. And then this happened.
I do not know why this work has garnered 200 kudos in less than two months, surpassing every other work I've done in total and speed of acquisition. The punchline came first, then I just worked backward to how it would happen, and figured out the form the story would take along the way. Much like the only other work I've gotten more than 100 kudos for, it was an idea that I dashed off, made sure there weren't all that many glaring errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar, and posted it. I only ever saw one recommendation, and that was someone else pointing it out (I mean, there are a lot of bookmarks, but bookmarks are often "things I want to read later" rather than "this is something good", so...)
And yet, it continues to gather things. Much more slowly now than it did at the outset, but I had a moment there of "oh, goodness. This took off." and I am thoroughly convinced that this work is the only time that something like this will ever happen because I got lucky. While others around me are getting these kinds of totals regularly.

Characters: Lê Chiến Kim, Ondine
Additional Tags: Aromantic Lê Chiến Kim, Possibly Asexual Lê Chiến Kim, Lê Chiến Kim Loves Action Movies, post-Syren, Alix and Ondine Are Going To Be Great Friends, One-Sided Attraction
Summary: After the movie, Kim and Ondine talk things out with each other. Kim gets mightily confused until he realizes he hasn't actually told Ondine a very important part of why things happened the way they did.All four of these works were comment prompt fills for (or inspired by)
queerly_beloved's pride fanworks fest. And all of them were Miraculous Ladybug because that was, of the things being offered at the time, the one thing I knew well enough to be able to write. They're all different takes of various sorts, playing with the characters and their situations. It was a lot of fun to write each of them — Marinette is hella strong, Sabrina finds her backbone, Kim is just clueless, and the outtakes were hilarious to envision, without having to envision what they would be outtakes of. This also means that Miraculous Ladybug is now at the top of the fandoms I've written works for. With a whole seven. (And not counting each of the posts of the giving of grief as separate Dragonriders of Pern works, which they very well could be.)

Characters: Miles Morales, Aaron Davis (Marvel)
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Alternate Universe - Uncle Aaron Lives, Phone Calls to Prison, Awkward Conversations, Role Models, As Slice of Life as Being Spider-Man and The Prowler Can Be
Summary: Miles still keeps in touch with Uncle Aaron, mostly by phone. Getting shot didn't stop their relationship, but it definitely has changed it, and neither of them are really sure what happens now.Spider-Verse! Which is a great movie and definitely worth seeing when you get the chance. At some point, I'll have to sync up the animator's commentary track and watch the whole thing again, because it's just really awesome. The recipient for this requested an alternate timeline so as to continue exploring the interactions between Miles and his Uncle, and it seemed like in most times where Aaron would have succeeded at living, he definitely would not be walking free. The repeated messages came from a podcast interview that I had listened to where someone was being interviewed from prison, and the interview itself kept getting interrupted by this recording that says eerything was being recorded, as well as the time left on a call to the person in prison, so that made for an interesting framework of how to strucutre the conversations as well, since they're also about hiding and finding out and suspecting and not going all the way into knowing. This one took a serious turn away from its original draft when the beta got a hold of it - it was going to be something more akin to the subjects that the Movement for Black Lives would be interested in, but the beta strongly suggested that would run afoul of the DNWs, and so it was reworked into the form it has now. Which is an equally good story, just not the one that first came out.
And there we have it, already making a big case that this year will be the most words-prolific year to date. (It helps that there's that 23k monstrosity right there eating up a lot of the around 50k that I would otherwise do in a year.)
