Write Every Day: 11 August 02019

Greetings! This is the Write Every Day Check-in post for 11 August 02019.

Today got a few things done. Most of it, though, was spent clearing out some tabs and then going to work on my WIP, which is very clearly taunting me about the compact (let's say something like 10k is "compact" in this case) story I had in mind, suggesting that it's going to be a lot more than that. Having written something in teh 23k range earlier this year, and then following it with an 18k sequel, I feel pretty confident that I can manage a big wordcount, but this one started (again!) with a simple idea and is making itself more complex every time I stare at it and add more to it.

Thankfully, I have a killer beta for this when it gets written out, which will make it better when I finally actually get through writing all of it!

Which is to say, between the projects of clearing out my tabs and writing on this WIP, I probably cleared close to 3000 words of my own writing (some of those words are link text and the thing I'm using as the conceit of this story and it's plot-driving abilities.) Which is a good Sunday, indeed.

I mentioned the 1200 words after midnight this morning, and there's also most of 300 more tonight, plus various small additions and tweaks throughout the draft. Not counting anything said in discussion of the story. And honestly if all I'd done today was look up the varying severity of burn injuries, I'd call it a good day's writing?

It's not fractaling out in that way. The plot is still progressing as intended, it's just the itinerary is showing more stops along the way than I had originally accounted for.

300 words on the big WIP, unwriting the last couple hundred words from yesterday. As before, I'm not sure these words are right, either -- maybe I'll pull a Penelope and redo them all again tomorrow.

Sometimes that's what happens. I've had a couple of times where a thread looked promising, only to realize that it's not as promising as thought and I have to unwind the whole thing. Sometimes those become alternate takes on the idea, but usually, they just go back into the drawer for later.

525 words and some useful plotting/character analysis done on the reverse bang. At least half of those words were aided by doing 20 minute sprints/timed bits with a friend. That and writing while walking seem to be working for this thing.

Also checked in for the bang, and read a post from one of the authors I follow which sparked a nice set of comments about the character and relationship she had written about in the post, which in turn gave me some insight into one of my characters.

789 words on the fun side WIP that I can hopefully finish tomorrow thereby eliminating a distraction from my main WIP, plus 269 words on said main WIP. Not too shabby, given how much else I did today!

Alibi sentences for the 10th and today. We put on a party at the bookshop celebrating 15 years in business, and I am bone tired. The party turned out well but I've gotten zero writing done. 8-/

Sometimes it's good to celebrate accomplishments. 15 years as a bookshop is not shabby at all.

Congrats to your awesome word count!
I wrote 1,2k yesterday, finishing that blog post and doing some small scenes for a fic. Also, you forgot to put me in on the 9th, I reported my tally for it in yesterday's post.

Excellent wordcount! Also, I can soooo relate to a project starting out seemingly short(er) and ending up, well, NOT. I wish you good words and many of them, in that case! :-)

There's a little bit more to go for you, then, and that's pretty neat.

The project itself is still proceeding along the plot track that I put for it, it's just making more stops than I had anticipated, and so there's a lot more words to be done.

I got in about 500 words.

I have a 25k to write and I have no idea that I can get that much out of my idea... by the time I outline and plan, I really never any desire to actually write the thing. I am usually a seat of the pants writer for this very reason. I like telling stories that I don't know. If I plan too much, then I know it already and tend to just get too bored to finish... strange huh?

Not too strange. But then again, I also outline in a way that I have a suspicion of who the characters are and what they're doing, and then I let it play out and see if I was right. Sometimes I have to add someone or something in there to get past a block, and sometimes another character steps in and gets the scene moving in the direction that I want to go.

I'm always tempted to write the big exciting stuff first, but that's usually the end of it, and I try to save that for when I'm not feeling motivated to write what I've got in front of me. Or when I'm really blocked and need the future narration to show me how I get around that thing.

Polished off another exchange fic yesterday/the 11th and also finally started my iddyiddybangbang fic - and I'm kinda rolling around in the fluff of it all. I'm going trope-iddy with a Notting Hill AU and there's is a glorious lack of original plot happening and yet it's hitting all my writing buttons and *flail* I now understand why people enjoy this challenge so much.

Pre-emptively for today/12th, and I've written about half of another exchange fic. Only this time I'm, gasp, early! Apparently having what felt like five thousand deadlines in quick succession has accidentally improved my time management skills, haha. No iddy work yet, but I'm about to start and have tentatively set myself a 1k a day goal in the hopes that I get it all drafted this month and have plenty of time to do some canon review to check my voices are spot on and get a beta for it, hmm... but we shall see! I am a terrible last minute deadline person most of the time :/

Idfic is supposed to be a really good exercise. I don't know that I've done anything that's totally id, but I know I've done a few things where I had to just admit that if nobody liked it other than me, that was fine.

Hooray for time management being a thing that comes with practice.
