Greetings! This is the Write Every Day Check-in post for 14 August 02019.

I don't really have anything super-inspiring to write about today. Among other things, it looks like I'm just going to have to sit tight and see if my recipient is one of the people that waits for a significant amount of time before commenting. It gives me a little bit of practice in the idea that sonia put forth in a Sundown Healing Arts letter about how people respond to mistakes, which emphasises that context is important in determining how big a mistake something is (and whether it's even called a mistake, as opposed to a risk or a gamble), that people with more privilege get to make more mistakes without disastrous consequences, and that there are healthy and unhealthy ways of fixing and calling attention to mistakes. It's a thing that I wrote and enjoyed doing and reading, so it's not a mistake on that grounds. Thee wasn't any attached DNWs to need avoiding, so that wasn't a factor. But, as you can see, there's a certain amount of my own self that's having an anxiety that things went all wrong because, well, there's no proof that anything went right, and my background is the sort where convincing myself that things are going okay needs regular positive feedback, possibly more than what someone with less trauma in their background might need. So it's an exercise in identifying the source and trying to decide whether it's something worth adding additional fuel to.

(And I can go "oh, hey, look! A distraction! See that other exchange that's going to open up soon? Why not focus on that, instead?")

Today, as I was writing on my WIP, I watched my plot jump tracks from one set of rails to another, presenting me with an alternate way of getting through the chapter that worked just as well and provided a solution to making sure I included bits that were mentioned in one of the things I'm taking inspiration from for this work. That's great. At the same time, I think I still have an entire chapter that might be a full-on "???" between this one and the next one that's going to be the conflict apex. After which I don't actually have a clue what happens, other than general ideas of what needs to (because it's in the inspiring material), but I don't have a clue how I'm going to put that together yet. Thankfully, since I don't have to write it yet, it's a problem I can put off until Tuesday to nom the juicy plotburger today.

Negative words, technically. (I took the last several paragraphs off while I figure out how to get at the next couple of plot points without burning any more identities and without relying on a syntactical ambiguity that the language I am writing in has and the language the characters are speaking does not.) Still three hours to midnight, though.

And the NaNoWriMo site and forums are undergoing substantive upgrades, so I was poking around the new forums, and someone in Reference Desk said "hi I'm an expert in trauma injuries & treatment; Police, Fire, EMS & SWAT responses (including response plans and techniques); 911 Dispatching. ask me things!" so I asked them things and that was 500 words in itself.

So, plenty of writing, then, but not perhaps on the projects you were hoping for.

15th: Some alibi level editing on kissing fic #2, which is now posted. And I wrote a little in-joke snippety thing on paper and posted it to someone. That might be all I manage today.

Got caught up in reading a book, so just 213 words today, but those 213 words included a graceful transition to the next scene, so I'm pleased.

Also waiting for a recip to comment is aaaagony. I obsessed over it this last yuletide, only to realize I was worrying too much when my recip did in fact comment effusively after just a few days. we have such an expectation of immediate validation sometimes these days, what with the fast pace of everything on the internet, that it can be so hard to exercise some patience. Writing in general is a tough hobby that way, it's such a long slog spent mostly alone until other people can read the thing and tell you if they like it.

Polished and posted both the Fan Flashwoks piece and the Simarillion Writer's Guild piece. Got 120ish words on the reverse bang.

Now I'm contemplating if I should sign up for Innumerable Stars (the minimum is only 500 words, I can do that!) but I really shouldn't.

I poked at the bookshop novel, revising a few things to make them go together better, moving things around, etc. This is going to be a long slog, but I still like the thing, so it's not bad work! ;-)

Picked up and consumed a new canon and wrote a pinch hit in one fell swoop, so it was a good day for me! I'm sorry your recipient hasn't shown up yet, waiting around when you don't know if the wait will be fruitful is really frustrating. I'm waiting on a comment from someone at the moment too, and while I liked the story in the end and I've had other positive comments it's not quite what I would have written without trying to work in their prompts so I continue to half-heartedly watch my inbox and hope...

Nice work! I'm not sure if I could do the whole thing of zero to pinch hit in a hurry like that, but it might a fun challenge to try for a weekend where I don't have anything else that I need to do.

It was a short canon at least! And I'd been eyeing it for awhile thinking I could maybe do something with the prompts if I liked the canon, which sounded interesting, so there was some pre-zero percolating for sure. I just needed to sit down with the source and see if it would line up like I thought. Plus it had a short deadline and had been lingering, which helps with the motivation - but it's definitely not my typical pinch hitting style. I know some people do this sort of pinch hitting regularly, but I think I'd burn out fast picking up loads of new things eek. But it was definitely fun, if you're tempted to give it a shot!

Ah, one of those awesome writing fortuities, when something that seems a tangent turns into a devilishly wonderful plot addition! Yay! I'm glad the writing is going so well for you. May the trend continue. :-)

Yesterday, I wrote a poem for my 21st wedding anniversary, which is today. It's our tradition that I give T. a poem for each anniversary. This one compared our 21 years of marriage to the ways in which that number is significant in our culture (eg. 21-gun salute, drinking age of 21, 21 wins at blackjack).

Congratulations on twenty-one years, and a poem about them. Did it happen to be twenty-one lines?

Alas, no--that's a brilliant idea, though! Nope, I'm afraid I was a tad long-winded about things. ;-) Anyway, he liked it, so I guess that's what matters.
