Write Every Day: 10 November 02019

Greetings! This is the Write Every Day Check-In Post for 10 November 02019.

Today, I accomplished things in other than writing, a practice I usually refer to as "backburnering", because while I have a great few opening lines for this thing I want to work on, I still haven't yet figured out the gist of the story as things are going along. Some of the details will revel themselves to me over time, but it's sometimes nice to have a general idea of the place you want to go when you let the characters loose to play. I spent my time effectively and well, by which I mean I collected several achievements on a game that I'm not really sure I'll ever be able to do quickly enough to collect the speedrun achievement on it. Because a single successful sequence of it can take an hour or two if you stop and think about things as you go along and engage in the tactical necessities for it. Ah, well. Still, useful progress today on that.

Also spent time clearing out some tabs, and did some shopping, and also, after have realized that a fic I wrote predicted something that happened in the canon about a half-season later than when I had set the fic. And the pairing hasn't happened yet, but still, it's kind of weird to find out you have guessed correctly about a future canonical event entirely by accident.

Today is also the tenth day of November, so for the NaNo folk, they're hoping to be a third-way through the novel they intend to write, with a target just shy of 17k. I have written longer fic than that this year, but we're soon going to be getting into "longer than my longest fic" territory, even if we won't be getting into "longer than my longest series" until we're almost done with this month.

tweaked firelight a bit. plotted out a thing, fsvo "plotted" that mostly work out to "I have an idea and it should work". attempted to canon review for the latter, failed; brains suck.

I missed a couple of check-ins, mostly because I was focused on writing a story for Femslash Exchange from the scratch on the deadline day because the first story I started just wasn't working out, and my health and stuff were conspiring against me. Uh, anyway, on the 8th I wrote a couple of hundred words of my novel before rushing off to another town to go to theatre with a friend. On the 9th I wrote, um, over 2000 words of the said Femslash Exchange story before asking for an extension so I could finish it; plus I managed to get in my slightly over 100 words of the novel. And on the 10th, another 800+ words to finish the Femslash Ex fic draft, because that story didn't want to be short; plus another ca. 100 words of the novel.

So now all I need is to get the Femslash Ex story from a garbage first draft to decent story before the reveals!

Thank you! Yeah, I normally take longer than that to put together a first draft, especially one of that size (3K words). Deadlines are wonderful (if stressful) muses.

As someone who has picked up a pinch hit our two, I confirm this. They're good when you need to make something in a hurry.

This is something I'm only just learning. My current theory is to make a list of the obstacles and complications the POV character will face -- not necessarily how they'll react to or overcome them, but a list provides enough forward momentum that I can generally write a bit faster once I've sorted them out. :-)

Day 11: One more pass through time travel fic #4 (adding 101 net words, but making a lot of tweaks) and sent it back to beta. Started thinking about the obstacles and complications in time travel fic #6. Tomorrow I'll either start the rewrite on #5 or firm up the plans for #6... or both! :-)

That's a possible way of going about it. I haven't quite figured that bit out, either, but there are ways of making it work.

Day 10 -- 120ish words and a fair amount of thinking about the timeline on Lamps. I'm still poking at my HLH piece, but it's all back-of-brain at this point. I hope to get a chance this week to watch the episode I need for one of the characters.

Day 10: wrote 534 words on the WIP. No editing on the draft, alas. Just didn't find a block of time where I could devote enough concentration to it.

Day 10 was my birthday, so I spent it having fun just kicking around, low-key, with my husband. I did add 251 words to my fanfic before we left the house for the day's festivities, however, and that felt pretty good.

Sorry I missed to check in yesterday - I'm piled with work for the voluntary job since a couple of days, and simply forgot before I went to bed. NaNo is ploughing along. I'm still meeting my personal word count goals each night and I'm at nearly 24k already. But it's a struggle on most days, as I've written down all of the world building notes of the ideas I had so far which don't need further research or thorough pondering (*), and the narrative part still isn't behaving in any way. I started a second version of it which is somewhat better, but my characters insist on doing everything in such a detailed way that I'm still on my first day of events, at nearly 9k. *sobs* I'm likely going to throw all of this away again later, but it serves the purpose of discovering my characters and their oddities quite well, so there's that.
I wrote 2,6k on the 9th and 2,7k on the 10th, with 2,3 and 2,1k for NaNo respectively.

(*) I need to draw maps, get some ideas of how many of my peoples are speaking which common language, and how well they might understand others, get ideas about political systems and some ecologigal and geological details, and make some sense of the number of warriors each nation is having involved in the conflict which is the starting point of the story. And these are just the most urgent questions. *tears out hair* To imagine I decided to write Fantasy because I didn't want to deal with the kind of thorough research I'd need for a historical novel... XD

but still, it's kind of weird to find out you have guessed correctly about a future canonical event entirely by accident.

Good things! And you know, sometimes you end up writing about 150k for a 50k novel, because that additional 100k is the stuff you need to explain to yourself about why everthing happens the way it does.
