Once again, the last six months worth of work posted to the Archive of Our Own, not counting all of the other projects and writing that I am engaged with, only some of which will eventually migrate to the AO3.

  1. Four Black Mages Walk Into A Sunken Temple (1504 words) by silveradept
    Fandom: Final Fantasy I
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
    Relationships: Black Mage/Black Mage/Black Mage/Black Mage
Characters: Fire-Aligned Black Mage | Koji, Ice-Aligned Black Mage | Quilo, Lightning-Aligned Black Mage | Rai, Status Effects-Aligned Black Mage | Nick
Additional Tags: Banter, Black Mage College Dropouts, Innuendo, Suggested (And Quickly Discarded) Black Mages/Kraken, Irreverent Attitudes Toward Saving The World
    Summary:

On their way down to fight the Fiend of Water, the four Light Warriors reflect on how they have managed to get so far without screwing things up, which astonishes them as much as it does everyone else.

I couldn't not do this for Holly Poly, since I drew the same recipient from last year and 4x Black Mage was put up specifically because of the 4x White Mage fic I did the year before. I'm kind of hoping that next year they put up 4x Red Mage and I end up completing the set, or something like it. The recipient also enjoyed this much more irreverent take, since I imagine the Black Mages being a little more hotheaded and boastful than the White Mages might have been. I also couldn't resist setting it in the Sunken Temple, since that's where most of the Black Mages' skillsets would shine. Admittedly, this did mean having to check and see if a group that chose to pass up Class Change would still be able to access high-enough spell tiers to be effective against those enemies (they can).

  2. Drop The Puck, Drop The Gloves, Drop The Pretenses (2608 words) by silveradept
Fandom: Humans Are Space Orcs (Meme)
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Doctor Fawkes & Jasmine Kerrigan & Yuri Swift, Katebrica & Yuri Swift
Characters: Botanist With A Healthy Hockey Fanaticism | Jasmine Kerrigan, Engineer Who Was A Netminder In Juniors And Knows Her Stuff | Yuri Swift, Team Mom and Kraken Fan With Anthro Tail | Doctor Fawkes, Bird-Species Grad Student Who Really Doesn't Get Why Humans Like Violent Sports | Katebrica
Additional Tags: Girls' Night, ice hockey, Women's Ice Hockey, Fist Fights, That Feeling When You Realize You're Sitting Next To Aliens That Might Turn Homicidal At Any Moment
    Summary:

Katebrica's been invited to watch the holobroacast of an important ice hockey game for research on ver thesis about human interactions. When there's a dirty hit in the game, Katebrica realizes that humans are a very complex species to try and study.

One of two rejected-for-DNW ideas in this set, this was the initial idea I had for Yuletide, but after I realized I was going to be discussing the violent aspects of hockey, I made an inquiry and a mod suggested that the work wouldn't as a gift, so instead, I went with Girls' Night, and came back to this one to finish it off. I like this one because I feel like a lot of the Space Orcs stories I consumed fundamentally focused on the weirdness of humans and kind of swept under the rug that to an alien mindset, there's plenty for them to be weirded out or terrified about when it comes to what humans do as pastimes, and that sport would be one of those things that's head-tilting.

  3. We Didn't Start The Fire [This Almost Scans If You Squint Remix] (630 words) by silveradept
    Fandom: Miraculous Ladybug
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
    Relationships: Adrien Agreste | Chat Noir/Alya Césaire/Marinette Dupain-Cheng | Ladybug
Characters: Adrien Agreste | Chat Noir, Alya Césaire, Marinette Dupain-Cheng | Ladybug, Original Miraculous Ladybug Character(s)
    Additional Tags: Remix, Filk
    Summary:

Ladybug needs convincing to save the world, because the world doesn't look like it wants to be saved, in something close to the form of the Billy Joel song.

This was one of the [community profile] snowflake_challenge prompts for this year - to remix a work into something else, and the work that I shamelessly borrowed [personal profile] alexseanchai's outline for was the thing that made the most sense to do on the timeline. Plus, I had a sense of the song and was able to make quick progress on the remixing. It's silly, but apparently, there were some people who were checking it to see if it scanned by singing it.

  4. Office Hours (778 words) by silveradept
    Fandom: Chronicles of Narnia - C. S. Lewis, Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling
    Rating: General Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Hermione Granger & Susan Pevensie
    Characters: Hermione Granger, Susan Pevensie
    Additional Tags: Graduate School
    Summary:

Hermione visits Susan during office hours, seeking clarity of why Susan is so certain various other forms of magic exist outside of what she was taught at Hogwarts.

This one is the one that got posted for the exchange, with a very curious graduate student (because I can't imagine Hermione not going on to graduate studies after she gets through her final year at boarding school) and someone else who has also been very exposed to magic and who could turn that into a career in academia herself. It wasn't the best idea I had, but the first thought that I had waltzed into DNW territory again, when I asked about it, since I wasn't sure.

  5. Chronoartifice (996 words) by silveradept
    Fandom: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling, Chronicles of Narnia - C. S. Lewis
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Hermione Granger & Susan Pevensie
    Characters: Hermione Granger, Susan Pevensie
Additional Tags: office hours, bad memories, Time Eggs
    Summary:

Perpetually problem-solving Hermione Granger visits Dr. Pevensie during her office hours with a possible solution to averting the situation that took Susan's family from her.

And this was the one that went in the wrong direction for being a useful gift, regrettably. It's not actually tagged with Chrono Trigger as a fandom, mostly because Gaspar and his Time Egg idea are being discussed, rather than any action being taken on it, and it's supposed to be an Easter egg for someone to recognize both the name and the device under construction. (Way to spoil it, self!) But I like the idea that Hermione is feeding Susan ideas about how to get the family back together because her sense of justice is completely offended by how it happened, and Susan is doing her best to deflect Hermione's interest, but she can't stop her from continuing to think on the problem.

  6. Giving In To Temptation (2963 words) by silveradept
Fandom: Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
    Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Dingo/Galahad/Zoot (Monty Python and the Holy Grail)
Characters: Dingo (Monty Python and the Holy Grail), Zoot (Monty Python and the Holy Grail), Sir Galahad (Monty Python and the Holy Grail), Castle Anthrax Maidens
Additional Tags: Extremely Dubious Consent, Spanking, Oral Sex, Consent Issues, It's Galahad's Consent That's Not Enthusiastic, Castle Anthrax Is a Maze of Twisty Passages All Alike, Breaking the Fourth Wall, Get On With It!
    Summary:

All Galahad wants is to find the Grail, or if it's not in Castle Anthrax, to get out and continue his quest. The maidens of Castle Anthrax have a very different idea in mind, and they're all conspiring against him to make sure the laws and decrees of the castle are carried out to the letter.

Oh, this was far too much fun to write, but I definitely wanted to think about what might have happened to Galahad if the ladies of Castle Anthrax had gotten their way with him. And to keep it properly Pythonesque, so that meant balancing the comedic effects with the very real punishment scene that was going to have to happen. I think it turned out fabulously, one of those pieces that flowed well, hit the notes correctly, and delivered a satisfying experience. Even though I'm often shy about writing something that explicit.

  7. Safe Words (6975 words) by silveradept
    Fandom: Miraculous Ladybug
    Rating: Mature
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
    Relationships: Adrien Agreste | Chat Noir/Marinette Dupain-Cheng | Ladybug, Adrien Agreste | Chat Noir & Marinette Dupain-Cheng | Ladybug
Characters: Marinette Dupain-Cheng | Ladybug, Adrien Agreste | Chat Noir, Juleka Couffaine, Rose Lavillant, Kagami Tsurugi, Alya Césaire, Nino Lahiffe
Additional Tags: Top Alya, Bottom Nino, Rope Top Rose, Rope Bottom Juleka, Learning to Top Adrien Agreste | Chat Noir, Experimenting With Bottoming Marinette Dupain-Cheng | Ladybug, Everybody's At Least A Little Kinky Here, Panic Attacks, role reversals, Akuma After-Effects, Asexual Kagami Tsurugi, Impact Top Kagami, Minor Adrien Agreste | Chat Noir/Kagami Tsurugi, Minor Juleka Couffaine/Rose Lavillant, Minor Alya Césaire/Nino Lahiffe
    Summary:

After a particularly nasty akuma's effects, Ladybug finds herself relying more than she wants to on Chat Noir's ability to calm her out of panic attacks. If Marinette can keep those feelings in check, with the help of her friends and Adrien, then she won't have to risk the Chat Blanc future just so she can pull herself together. Adrien seeks help on how to best manage the new, more leading role he's taking on in their dynamic, since Chat Noir feels extremely out of his depth.

And, mostly unintentionally, we shift from Pythonesque smut with experienced practitioners to two awkward people just starting to stretch their abilities, even though they've been practicing with each other the whole time and not knowing it. I like this work because, as one of the commenters noted, it's about muddling your way through and having a supportive community keeping you safe. Which is not to say there isn't a place for works where everyone's experienced and sometimes even preternaturally good at knowing what each other wants, but sometimes you just want a work where there's fits and starts, where confidence only gets you so far, and you occasionally have to run out your safeword when it becomes apparent that you'd otherwise need to renegotiate in the middle of the scene in front of people who shouldn't be privy to your secret identities.

  8. Scraps and Fragments of Advice (2695 words) by silveradept
Fandom: Epistory - Typing Chronicles (Video Game)
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Original Protagonist Character (Epistory) & Original Companion Creature (Epistory)
    Characters: Original Protagonist Character (Epistory)
Additional Tags: Epistolary, 5+1 Things, Memo From Your Past Self, Past Relationship(s), Elemental Magic, Memory Loss, Time Loop, POV Second Person
    Summary:

Guidance from the past to the future, first in hints, then in a shoulder to have feelings on, in the hope that this time around, the loop is broken and the protagonist goes past the point of no return.

This one also clicked for me, and really well for the recipient, because Epistory is the kind of game that has a rich and expansive world that's there to help the protagonist's story along, a place constructed from memories that are usually only hinted at. If you gather all the collectibles, you get a clearer picture, but that doesn't mean the picture is clear. And since the story is very personal, it seems like a different protagonist would have different memories, and a different story. The epistolary format worked out really well to tell it with. I think more people should want to play Epistory. And write fic for it, but we still have to get over the hurdle that it's a typing game, and that the player is going to do a lot of work to fill in the spots of the story that aren't explicitly put out there.

  9. One Functional Etherian (1911 words) by silveradept
Fandom: She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018)
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
    Relationships: Adora/Catra/Glimmer (She-Ra)
    Characters: Adora (She-Ra), Catra (She-Ra), Glimmer (She-Ra), Bow (She-Ra)
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, working through trauma, Gestures of Intimacy, Learning to trust, Found Family, Kissing
    Summary:

Catra is still getting used to the idea that she's not the enemy, she's not terrible, and that both Adora and Glimmer still want to be with her and they might even love her, even after everything she's done.

Because of the way the source worked out in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, it's really easy to do fic in that universe that's about working out your traumas, recognizing that things are different, and learning to believe someone when they say something that, for a significant part of your life, was a lie, or something they believed firmly but demonstrated wasn't true with their actions. And about not trusting yourself as a post-trauma entity, about the voice in the back of your head that says the person who hurt you was right and you really are a terrible person at your core. Luckily for Catra, she has people who are too stubborn to get pushed away and people who understand her experience well enough to love her for it anyway.

This work was also notable because in the time between receiving the assignment and posting the fulfillment, the recipient's account disappeared! So, instead, the community itself got a work from me, and hopefully those members of the SPOP fandom that find it enjoy it. (Or people who just like the story.)

  10. The Princess (and Prince, and Queen) and the Pea Test (2937 words) by silveradept
Fandom: Prinsessen paa Ærten | The Princess and the Pea - Hans Christian Andersen
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Prins | Prince/Prinsesse | Princess (Prinsessen paa Ærten | Princess and the Pea), Dronning | Queen/Prinsesse | Princess (Prinsessen paa Ærten | Princess and the Pea)
Characters: Dronning | Queen (Prinsessen paa Ærten | Princess and the Pea), Prins | Prince (Prinsessen paa Ærten | Princess and the Pea), Prinsesse | Princess (Prinsessen paa Ærten | Princess and the Pea)
Additional Tags: Trans Prins | Prince, Alchemical Construct Prinsesse | Princess
    Summary:

A thunderstorm reveals the true reason why the Prince has been so unwilling to take any of the brides that have been presented to them, and the Queen must contend with the consequences of her own words and actions that brought this situation to bear.

I think this one went over well, which made it all the more disappointing to take a knock that it was too close to the recipients Do-Not-Wants after all was done. I offered any necessary changes, but then got back "no changes were requested". And by the comment that was left, it really seems like the recipient enjoyed the work! How frustrating. (Also, words mean things, and so I had additional the additional frustration of "that thing you are telling me I did, that is not the word to use for it, even if I don't know what the right word is for it")

Those frustrations aside, this was another one of those stories that I thought went really well, and that I was putting together something solid and enjoyable and a clever take on the source material. So, mission accomplished in telling the story, and I would be able to enjoy it more if there weren't that aggravation that's also attached to it. I'll have to get over it, and I will, eventually, with time.

  11. Much Ado After Nothing (5933 words) by silveradept
Fandom: Much Ado About Nothing - Shakespeare
    Rating: Mature
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Beatrice/Benedick (Much Ado About Nothing)
Characters: Beatrice (Much Ado About Nothing), Benedick (Much Ado About Nothing), Don Pedro (Much Ado About Nothing), Claudio (Much Ado About Nothing), Hero (Much Ado About Nothing), Original Characters
Additional Tags: Bisexual Benedick, Verbal Sparring, Sharpened Wit, Applying Wisdom to Marriage Vows, Benedick's Past Statements Come Back To Haunt Him, Minor Claudio/Hero (Much Ado About Nothing)
    Summary:

After the events in Messina, Beatrice and Benedick take a honeymoon, but everywhere they go, parts of Benedick's past are waiting to greet him and give his wife a fuller picture of who she has agreed to marry.

Beatrice and Benedick are one of my favorite dynamics to work with in other fandoms, so it was nice to be able to come back to the source and speculate on what might have happened after the events of the play. I may have taken some significant pleasure in piling up the misadventures and past statements of Benedick to have them bite him in the ass now that he's married, much to Beatrice's amusement. But they also have some serious conversations and negotiations that I would expect them to about their new married life. And there's the running joke about not going to Padua.

  12. Little Sunny Dragon Superhero (Or So They Think) (2663 words) by silveradept
    Fandom: RWBY, Miraculous Ladybug
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Yang Xiao Long, Sabine Cheng, Original Miraculous Ladybug Character(s)
Additional Tags: Crossover, Good Parent Sabine Cheng, Mistaken For A Superhero
    Summary:

Yang gets punted into the 21st arrondissement after taking the fall from the platform and meets someone who mistakes her for one of the heroes her world already has. Helping Yang comes second nature to Sabine, not that she knows she's helping someone with many of the same abilities as her own daughter.

I was itching to write some RWBY for this year's Into A Bar, and Yang specifically, for the high likelihood that she'd get into a bar brawl and clean house. And then the Random Number God assigned me Sabine Cheng, from Miraculous Ladybug, and the punching would have to get shelved. At least for this story. I have no doubt that if Yang thought she could get away with it, she might go back to the pub where she ended up and start a few things with some people because of the way Sabine reacted to some of their statements. When she's not out trying to help out the Miraculous Heroes with a more direct approach to busting heads and breaking akumas, because Yang really doesn't have much tolerance or patience for someone like Hawkmoth or Mayura.

  13. The Crushing Grip of Reason (2339 words) by silveradept
    Fandom: Labyrinth (1986), Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling
    Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
    Relationships: Hermione Granger/Jareth (Labyrinth)
Characters: Hermione Granger, Jareth (Labyrinth), Goblins (Labyrinth)
Additional Tags: With Cameos By Ron Weasley and Harry Potter, Taken By The Goblins, Treaty Negotiations, References to "The Area", Black Hermione Granger
    Summary:

When Hermione is wished away to the goblins, Jareth finds his old tactics don't work on her, and Hermione finds someone who might come close to being her equal.

Why not, right? Rarest of Rare was for fandoms and pairings that didn't have a whole lot of works associated with them, so I knew I was going to get an opportunity to do something properly weird, and this is what came out - Hermione stolen away by the goblins, meeting Jareth, and being completely un-charmed by his physical attributes. But I think they do manage to win each other over in the end, through their heated discussions and negotiations. Or at least like each other enough to want to see each other again for another round.

This seems like a smaller amount than usual, (AO3 stats says it's 35k so far, so not really) but it isn't, I don't think, and there's been plenty of other writing involved this year. Because this year was the year I finished Pern, all the way through, each novel and short story with snark and cocowhats, which is a hell of an accomplishment, and I should really get on importing the rest of it to AO3 when I have time. But also, I took a week off and then decided to start in on David and Leah Eddings' Belgariad series, which is proving so far to be the cardboard sets and visible wires version of the epic fantasy that we're supposed to pretend it is. So that's entertaining, at least, even if the protagonist fails the sexy lamp test.

We'll be back in another six months or so with more works to share. See you then!

Oh, I remember reading The Belgariad when I was... 12? I think? It's the series that kicked me to reading in English: I read it first in Finnish, then in Swedish, and in English, and have been reading pretty much in English ever since. I loved the series back then which means I probably should stay the hell away from them now. 😁

Your Hermione/Jareth sounds properly weird. I salute you!

I'm not sure what interested me in The Princess and the Pea one, but it was such a delightful surprise -- now it's hard to think of the original without this one filling in the blanks and answering all the questions. Oh and I love the Queen, she's awesome. <3 I'd happily read the sequels if any are forthcoming.
