Once again, it's time to see what kind of fiction I've put out for the last six months, and learn a little bit about what I was doing with them. Here we go!

  1. A Jet-Set Date (1857 words) by silveradept
    Fandom: Steven Universe (Cartoon)
    Rating: General Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
    Relationships: Amethyst/Vidalia
Characters: Amethyst (Steven Universe), Vidalia (Steven Universe)
Additional Tags: Pre-Steven Universe, Bickering Best Buds, Prankster Amethyst
    Summary:

It's date night for Amethyst and Vidalia. Once the child care issues are handled, Amethyst tries to get Vidalia to go places and have fun, but because she's Amethyst, some of the things she thinks are fun are less so to the human who has to consider her own thoughts and the fact that she's much more destructible than Amethyst is.

The Steven Universe gang are always fun to come back to and write more of, because of their development through the series, and the way that the inhabitants of Beach City are each their own kind of weird, and that weird is fleshed out enough with time and episodes that have them somewhat prominently. Vidalia doesn't get quite as much time as Onion does, but there's enough in there to know that she finds Amethyst inspiring, and it seems like the two of them would have similar ideas toward what makes a good date and what to do with them…even if Vidalia occasionally has to remind Amethyst that being human means that she's squishier and less likely to bounce back from potential bodily trauma.

  2. Sex Demon Knows Best (2979 words) by silveradept
    Fandom: Original Work
    Rating: Explicit
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
    Relationships: Succubus/Original Character(s)
Characters: Succubus Summoner | Horace, Succubus (Character)
Additional Tags: Blowjobs, Cunnilingus, Penis In Vagina Sex, muscle mommy, Knowing What You Want Even If You Won't Admit it, Enthusiastic Consent, Demon Summoning
    Summary:

Horace has summoned up a succubus to give him the best sex of his life. What he expected to see and who he was greeted with were very different, but despite his protestations, it becomes increasingly clear that the succubus dispatched to Horace is, in fact, exactly what he wants.

Sometimes you choose prompts in an exchange because you want to write something fun and smutty. And here we are. I really liked being able to play with the idea that the succubus knows what's sexiest for the summoner, even if the summoner doesn't actually believe that's what it is, because there's a lot of people out there who I think would have the same kind of thing happen to them if they summoned up a sex demon. There are so many sexy people out there who don't look like the people that our media suggests are sexy, and who have the skills to back it up and give someone a really good time, if only they could get past their prejudices about how a sexy person is supposed to look. Because Horace was willing to accept that this is the case, even if it takes some convincing of himself, and some half-hearted attempts to try and change the sex demon's mind, he gets to have a good time, and then to have a much longer good time than he was probably bargaining for. Which, of course, when you summon up a sex demon, you'd better be willing to have a marathon session, in case the demon likes you and wants to keep going until they're satisfied. (And the recipient liked it and found it hot, so mission accomplished.)

  3. From it, Dreams, and Nightmares, Were Born (981 words) by silveradept
    Fandom: Chrono Trigger
    Rating: General Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Lucca Ashtear, Taban Ashtear, Lara Ashtear
Additional Tags: dreamstone, Nightmares, Corrupting Influences, Trick or Treat: Trick, visions of alternate timelines
    Summary:

A piece of Dreamstone has found its way into Lucca's family. The inventor's urge is strong, but Lucca is determined not to repeat the nightmares she has already witnessed.

Sometimes what you need is just a short snippet of terror for the Trick or Treat Exchange, and Chrono Trigger, and the havoc that pieces of Lavos create when they are harnessed, found, or otherwise work their way into the world. And as the character whose nightmares are on screen, and that can also be fixed with the application of the right password, having Dreamstone start giving her living nightmares seemed entirely appropriate. Since the recipient had a "do not acknowledge this game had a sequel" instruction, I couldn't invoke both the nightmare of the past and the nightmare of the future, where Lucca's orphanage gets burned to the ground, although I could have invoked the nightmare of A.D. 1999 and the fiery destruction rained down upon the world from an emergent Lavos. Mostly, though, I thought the pieces of Lavos tend to work with the personal traumas of the people that pick them up and try to put them to use, and so Lucca had to relieve an alternate universe and a few other scary things. And also not to succumb to the temptation to use that fragment of Lavos to power things and provide abundant energy, given what she saw of Zeal and the Mammon Machine. She's smart, but she's also human, and so are the inventors around her.

  4. But What About Mirabel? (10384 words) by silveradept
    Fandom: Encanto (2021)
    Rating: General Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Mirabel Madrigal & Madrigal Family, Mirabel Madrigal & The Dragons of the Madrigal Family, Mirabel Madrigal & The Dragons of the Madrigal Valley
Characters: Mirabel Madrigal, Isabela Madrigal, Luisa Madrigal, "Abuela" Alma Madrigal, Bruno Madrigal, Pepa Madrigal, Félix Madrigal, Agustín Madrigal, Julieta Madrigal, Dolores Madrigal, Original Characters, Antonio Madrigal, Camilo Madrigal
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Dragon-Bonded Madrigals, Mirabel Madrigal Has a Gift, Supposedly-Mundane Mirabel Madrigal, Gossip, Nosy Neighbors, Misanthropic Goats, Sexist Neighbors, Plenty of Madrigal Magical Mishaps and Drama
    Summary:

On her fifteenth birthday, Mirabel Madrigal gave up on the idea that she might still bond with a hatchling dragon, and began to take care of her youngest cousin and prepare him for his own hatchling.

On his twelfth birthday, he bonded with a hatchling dragon, and Mirabel Madrigal was the only Madrigal born into the family without a dragon.

    Again.

But that doesn't mean Mirabel isn't still going to try and be a productive member of the family.

It's my Fandom Trumps Hate work for this year, and the prompt involved was great, about the thought of the Madrigal Miracle being related to having dragons in the valley along with them. The characters were mostly the same, as were their abilities, but there was also a second character to go along with, and also, it meant that Mirabel's manifested miracle went mostly unnoticed, because she didn't bond with a hatchling. That made her the outsider that she feels like, the one who doesn't have a dragon or a power of her own. And then we got to do all kinds of fun things about hearing one or the other half of conversations, and a misunderstanding, and then finding out that Mirabel hasn't been the odd one out because of a lack, but because she got something that didn't obviously manifest.

One of the things that I am proud of, but that wouldn't be noticed unless someone really recognized it, are the names of the dragons - except for Bruno's, they're all named after the flora and fauna found in Colombia, which is where Encanto drew its inspiration from. Each of the dragon names are thematically appropriate for their related Madrigals, including Bruno's. Again, it's one of those author details that nobody would notice or think about, but I'm glad that it's there. It makes for easily remembering the names of the dragons and who they're attached to.

  5. I See You Are A Technological Being (1232 words) by silveradept
    Fandom: Strange Planet (Webcomic)
    Rating: General Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Keeper of Knowledge, Beings - Character
Additional Tags: Technological Being, troubleshooting, A Normal Day in the Knowledge Center, Numberdevices
    Summary:

A normal day in the Knowledge Center, dealing with numberdevice issues, communication devices, and other common situations for the Keepers of Knowledge and their assistants.

  6. Unauthorized Narratives (512 words) by silveradept
    Fandom: Strange Planet (Webcomic)
    Rating: General Audiences
    Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Lifegiver Being/Cohabitation Commitment Partner Being
Characters: Lifegiver Being, Cohabitation Commitment Partner Being, Adolescent being
Additional Tags: Unauthorized Narratives, Appendage-Beasts, Anatomical Impossibilities, The Good Taste of Your Adolescent Being
    Summary:

Fandom, Strange Planet style, including some f the things that a lifegiver Being might look twice at to see if their adolescent Being is getting into things that will be troublesome.

Strange Planet is one of those fun comics that gives us looking at the human experience, as filtered through some slightly strange beings and the way they handle things. So, when this was the possible prompt, I decided it would be interesting to see if I could figure out how some of the strange things of our own lives would work through the perspective of those Beings. I started with the fandom one first, but found that I couldn't get it up to the required amount of words for a regular Yuletide assignment, so I set it aside and decided to work on my second idea, of what my usual day in the library would be like for a Strange Planet Being, although the Being does get most of the things that I have to deal with in sequence in a single work day, rather than spread out across several days, because it makes for a better story and slightly better hilarity involved that this Knowledge Keeper's reputation as a technological Being means they get ping-ponged from one issue to another without too much time in between. (Although, when I have similar things happen to me, it usually is one thing leading right into another and into another, so the only real change is that the problems are all technological, instead of the usual mix of library-related questions and tech issues.)

The recipient liked both of them, and several other commenters found them funny (and a few of them found them true-to-life.)

There we are! Another six months of materials, and this year's actual fic total is only about 37k of words. Actual writing totals is significantly more, of course, with the weekly book club, writing events, writing up some of my wrangles with technology, and the usual amount of dumping links on the unsuspecting. Plus comments and all the rest, so actual words written is way more likely to be north of 100k of words, spread out amongst the various places and services. One only wonders what the person who would have to archive me would keep, file, move, or otherwise, and what they would make as finding aids.
