Relationships: Teenage Girl/Best Friend's Older Brother/Brother's Friend
Characters: The Teenage Girl Looking For A Good Time | Mallory, Mallory's Best Friend's Considerate Compassionate (and Older) Brother | Leon, Leon's Friend and Mallory's Soon to be Official Boyfriend | Marcus, The Avatar of Rage-Filled Destruction Who Must Be Avoided At All Costs | Ophelia, The Highly-Competent Shop Clerk that Leon May or May Not Have a Relationship With | Anna
Additional Tags: Threesome - M/F/M, Hinge Relationship, Attempted Seduction, Lingerie, Noodle Incidents, Polyamory
Summary:Leon returned to his room to find a nearly-naked woman in his bed. Far from being the stuff of his fantasies, now Leon has to figure out a way of satisfying the demands of his sister's best friend without aggravating the harbinger of destruction that his sister will become if she finds out this happened. He's going to need reinforcements.
Commentary:
Holly Poly helps with thinking through how other situations might happen, but this particular one seemed to revolve around the line about the clerk at Sense and Sensuality, and then what kind of situation might have developed around that particular line, and how it might turn out. Some of the details are familiar if you've driven some of the same streets and highways I have, but none of it actually exists anywhere. I think it spun out well, and I could come up with a really good pun for the title, so that's extra benefits.

Relationships: Carmen Cinea & Eiji Miyake
Characters: Eiji Miyake, Eiji's Mother (9th Elsewhere), Betty IX (9th Elsewhere)
Additional Tags: Making Friends, shared traumas, Maslow Says You Must Be This Self-Actualized To Ride
Summary:After being fired from O.R.M.Y.!, Eiji goes home, has dinner with his mother, and then returns to Carmen's dreamscape with the intent of providing her with something neither of them have had much of in their lives—a friend.
Commentary:
9th Elsewhere was a webcomic in the heyday of webcomics, and I was introduced to it by meeting the artist at a signing event where there was piro of Megatokyo, Sprite Monkey of Secret of Mana Theater, Caroline of 9th Elsewhere, and Brian of Flipside, I believe, and the poster there of Carmen in an umbrella, with Eiji being lookout on the handle, was intriguing enough to not only purchase the posters available, but to get to read the comic online. It stopped abruptly, although we did manage to get a book of what had been created shipped and published eventually, but it's a story that really needs to be picked back up again, and finished, because the characters are vivid, the places are wonderful, and the difficulties being suffered are all too real. So the poetry fiction fragment I received for the year lent itself very nicely to 9th Elsewhere, and what followed flowed out pretty easily from there, once I knew that it was Eij going back because Carmen needed a friend. Eiji does, too, and he'll figure that out as well, but yeah, it's a story about going back for someone because they need someone other than who they have to get through.
The title is also a double pun, where "Return to the Scene of the Crime" would have become "Return to the Scene of the Rhyme" but then was Subverted Rhyme Every Occasioned into the current title, because the rhythm is a term that fits this story very well.

Relationships: Reference Librarian/Her Badass Adventurer Girlfriend
Characters: Priestess-Caretaker of the Knowing Astrid Librum, Apprentice Adventurer Siren
Additional Tags: Post-Apocalypse, Secret-ish Conspiracies, Reintegration to the Wider World, First Kiss
Summary:Siren has one more task to complete before she can become a full-fledged adventurer - spend a night in the abandoned temple and bring back proof that she hadn't fled in the night.
The temple is not abandoned, and Siren's view of the world will have to expand rapidly to keep pace with what Astrid is offering her.
Commentary:
This story was something to work with where I wanted to see things from a limited perspective and then have that perspective continuously widen with more information until the truth is sufficiently revealed and that there's much more going on in the world than there appeared to be at first. Siren is itching to get out of her situation and start seeing the world, but what is supposed to be her initiation night ritual brings the world to her, in the form of Astrid, who I love having mace her a Priestess of the Knowing, a librarian who has to relate to the world through more religious metaphors rather than the ones she's used to, because she's part of pulling the world that was shattered into smaller and more local viewpoints back together into a more connected whole. But she has to wait before she can appear, because the people who aren't ready for the truth will have shocks that the librarians don't want to have happen. I think Siren and Astrid will have a lovely relationship together, both personal and professional.

Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Ikari Yui, Dr. Manhattan (Watchmen), Ayanami Rei
Additional Tags: A Conversation Out of Time, Talking To Two People At Once, Attempting to Change the Future
Summary:Doctor Manhattan has a message for Yui Ikari, and for the one who is also composed of Yui Ikari, on a way to prevent what has already happened by understanding what should not happen.
Commentary:
Sometimes you put in a thing because you think it will be cool, and the universe rewards you by making you write it. In this particular case, the idea that the events of Watchmen, and the final act of Veidt is responsible in the future for the events of Evangelion, and Doctor Manhattan and his time-traveling abilities are trying to head off the disaster that will be Yui's soul being pulled into Unit 01. Because, however, everyone he's talking to, including Rei, doesn't have a clue what he's referencing, there's a good chance his warning will go unheeded. This one took a little thinking through, because I put it in as a "wouldn't that be cool." A very good example of "don't put in prompts you're not going to want to write, because you'll get that one back almost all the time." Sometimes even when you do want it, you have to go "Really? That one?"

Summary:Reva is having trouble finding her thesis and the necessary supporting evidence for it, but in talking with her roommate and her instructors, she eventually lands on something momentous and that has the chance of shaking up known history. Assuming it doesn't get shot down again.
Commentary:
I got to obliquely revisit my characters from the previous Fandom Trumps Hate piece, now much more grown-up and established as academics in their own right. With some new thoughts about how First Ones names get put together and how they might be used for specific ways of referring to people. That, and getting to write a little bit of what I think the mythos around She-Ra is, and how they would have to be referred to by different names if I wanted to differentiate them throughout time. Which made for some fun names to conjure up to give the reader an idea of what kind of She-Ra powers they might use.
I also admit that I like writing stories that bounce back and forth between epistolary segments, or written segments and spoken ones, where the ext part guides the conversations, and the other way goes as well. It lets me worldbuild and accelerate time to wherever the next conversation needs to happen. It might not work quite as well for any longer works, but it does very well for the short form that most of my works are.

Summary:Prince Alfred is among the many who hope to find the sleeping Princess upon her wakening, but unlike the others, he's not interested on trying to brute-force a solution.
Princess Sera, once awakened, is ready to get out of the terrible situation she's in, and having a Prince with enough brains to follow her will be the best thing she can use.
Commentary:
"[X] in the Face of the Weird" is one of the tags that I tend to use whenever there's a situation where a person is confronted with something that, by rights, should break their sense of reality, but instead they treat it with basically the same things that they would have otherwise, and our Prince here is no different. As someone raised in a world where fairy tales, and their consequences, are very real, he's learned to cultivate a very strong sense of politeness toward anyone who even looks like they might have magic power or be related to a fairy anything. And it serves him well, getting him to the princess well before everyone else (after hearing the terrifying story of what happened to get this castle into this state), and it serves him well again when confronted with a princess who wants to get away from it all, and intends on using the prince in front of her who has so far managed to demonstrate brains, even if he's not necessarily the best hand with a sword. (Which is fine for her, that's who she wants anyway.) It was fun to write a princess who can hold her own with the prince, and a prince who realizes that the person with the plan is the person who should be leading. And that his princess is sufficiently strong-willed that she will do her plan instead of his, no matter how much he tries to convince her otherwise. Sometimes you just have to have a little fun.

Summary:Kiki ducks into her favorite ramen shop for a bowl and strikes up a conversation with two strange people, who claim to be entirely without magic, and yet describe a child and his tiger that seem to be very much magical.
Commentary:
Oh, I love Into A Bar. The dice are always goood to me and make me stretch my brain into new and interesting combinations to make happen.
So this time around they gave me Calvin's Mom and Kiki to work through, and the best Idea I had for them was to have Calvin's parents out for a meal where they could get some advice from Kiki about possibly-magical children, and that addressed the Hobbes Uncertainty Principle some, as well. I liked it, and as with so many of the Into A Bar things I've done, the people who read it are appreciative of what goes into trying to craft these kinds of combinations and how it's not what they would have thought, but it flows nicely.

Summary:Neal asked Kel about Yuki. Yuki asked Kel about Neal. Kel does not want to be a courier between them, and sets up a way to make sure that the two of them can talk directly with each other.
Commentary:
I've been working through Tortall in book club for the last year or so, and now that I'd made it to Kel, opportunities to write fic for that part of Tortall were available and now part of my repertoire. And while I love Kel, and will happily write for her, Neal and Yuki's romance is one of those things that happens almost entirely off-screen, and so it's perfect fic fodder. In this particular case, I decided on a tea ceremony as the appropriate cover to get Neal and Yuki talking directly, and as usual, Neal finds himself outclassed by the women around him. I think of Neal as someone who doesn't give up easily in those matters, which is why he gets the famously stubborn Alanna as his knight-master, and that Kel is enough of a tactician and commander, with Raoul's support, that she can plan and execute her own operations. That makes everyone happy - Neal gets to see Yuki, Yuki gets to needle Neal, and Kel gets to stay out of it. This one seemed to go over pretty well.

Additional Tags: marriage talk, Misdirection, secondhand embarrassment, A Yamani Lady's Relationship to Visible Emotion
Summary:Prince Roald is continuing to try and get to know Princess Shinkokami as best as he can. What is told to them as a formal dinner between several parties invested in their marriage turns out instead to be an opportunity for asking awkward questions about marriage, love, and other delicate subjects. Princess Shinkokami indulges, to Roald's surprise, but Baron Piers and Baroness Ilane are there to answer frank questions accurately for the Princess.
Commentary:
And then I got to do it again, but this time for Roald and Shinko. A little less obvious sniping and teasing, since the Imperial Princess wouldn't be quite so prone to such things, but still a lot of trying to work around misunderstandings and get more than a limited amount of information out of a Yamani princess. That, and the possibility of having the Crown Prince and the Crown Princess in a dinner with nobody around that would forestall the asking of awkward questions, and the language difference being enough that Roald couldn't understand a thing about what his betrothed was asking. It was fun to be able to do these ones back to back, because I imagine them happening around the same time, so from Baroness Ilane's perspective, she has Neal asking about poetry to court Yuki, and then Their Majesties have arranged for Roald and Shinkokami to come so that they can have someone to give them The Talk, if they need it, without the embarrassment of asking their parents or the attendants accompanying Her Imperial Highness.
- The Alliterative Accounting Agency's Villain Origin Story (3989 words) by silveradept
Fandom: Original Work

Relationships: Supervillain & Their Accountant
Characters: The Alliterative Accounting Agency accountant to the Supervillain | Jen Aubery, City-wide known Supervillain | Risqué | Miss Raven
Additional Tags: plots and schemes, Training Up A New Villain, Above-Board Accounting, Snark, Swearing
Summary:One of the city's best-known supervillains has acquired assets that need professional management, because of a condition of acquisition. What happens from there, Jen insists, only has to do with accounting, and above-board accounting at that. And yet, by the end, there's clearly been villainy afoot. Very subtle villainy.
Commentary:
This story was inspired by a Discord thread, where a friend detailed a certain situation where a supervillain, down on funds, bought a fast food restaurant to use as a lair, and because the villain didn't actually care all that much about the front operation, other than that it had to stay in business, they delegated all of the decision-making to someone else, and that turned it into the kind of place where the food was excellent, the space could be converted into homeless housing at night, and the wages were far better than what you would normally get working fast food. I took the core of that idea and spun it out in such a way that it's the accountant who ends up being the person who (unintentionally) created the perfect kind of villainy for our highly-capitalist world, and doesn't realize she's done it until the supervillain points it out to her. At which point, the accountant is all-in for continuing this kind of villainy and franchising it to make some serious bank as well as some serious social change. I like that the readers and commenters point out how much Jen gives away that she's competent for this kind of task just by the naming of the agency she works for, and I hope she's going to be a great villain in the future.

Summary:Micah was told by his daughter to go find her mother. With the aid of something of Entrapta's that works correctly the first time, Micah lands in Arendelle, where he meets the Queen and her consort and enlists the aid of the Fifth Spirit to bring him and his wife home again.
Commentary:
Sometimes mistakes happen, and this piece came out of such a mistake - the wrong She-Ra series had been requested, and I matched on it, and I checked in with the mods to check in with the recipient and see if this was still okay to go, and it was, so here we are. Let's put a couple of SPOP characters in combination with the Frozen universe. Given that we have Entrapta, that's not actually the hard part. The hard part was figuring out how to get everyone together, when there wasn't going to be a shared word among all the people who needed it, at least not until Elsa. But then I decided, because Olaf was going to stick his nose into this story for comic relief, I may as well make him useful as well as comic, and using his magical construct status to suggeset at some hidden depths that he doesn't even realize he has, and probably won't think about again until he has to use them again. That pretty well sorted everything that needed to happen to get everyone together, and then it was Anna and Kristoff and Sven all making significant fun of things, because that's what they do, and the creatures around Elsa also choosing to have fun with others, instead of being serious. (They all tease Elsa, because she needs the reminder to not be so serious all the time.)
This one worked out all right, there's some clever bits in there, and the recipient enjoyed it, even though it wasn't what they had probably wanted, so that makes it at least a 1.5x success multiplier, or something.

Summary:A dragonrider in a strange land has found the one who may be able to take him home, and tasked with removing the blight upon the mines while he's at it.
Commentary:
Another example of "don't suggest things that you're not actually willing to write," because sometimes you click in and go "Oh,m that would be fun to write," and it comes back to you in your assignment. A Pernese dragonrider, trying to work with the great dragon Smaug, and the two of them having very incompatible views of the world, made for plenty of conflict, but much like the other thief, K'van, used to being the Smallest Dragonboy, is able to let the threats and insults roll off of him, flatter Smaug long enough to get close enough, and then ride the dragon back to his own planet.
I'll admit, I was glad this one came out for Trick or Treat, with a low minimum word count, because I don't think I could have sustained the idea that much longer than it went on. And it was still okay, and enjoyed by the recipient. Sometimes ideas only go so far, but this one went far enough.

Summary:Cora must stand in front of the assembled Masters to deliver her work in the history of After Thread. Will they accept her into their ranks, when what she has to say is in defiance of many of their traditions?
Commentary:
And here we are, at Yuletide, where I finally get to indulge one of the things that I really want to see more of: the era after dragons on Pern. Not just because I expect it to be a complete and terrifying revolution against the order that has been imposed upon the people of Pern for the last thousands of Turns, but also because the things that AIVAS introduced back into the society to make it possible to permanently defeat Thread are also many of the necessary tools to permit the widespread dissemination of information and misinformation, and the Harpers just won't be able to keep up with this. So instead I have someone giving the equivalent of their dissertation to both set the scene and to give dire warnings about the future, with a mix of the curious, the interested, and the people who refuse to see the writing on the wall.
With one digression into how things might be peacefully resolved, and bringing in a lot of the worldbuilding that Todd did, without bringing in any of the other things that he contributed to make the place worse. I don't know how my recipient found it, whether they were hoping for something that was more pretty dragons and fighting Thread, or whether something like this was acceptable or even excellent for them. I admit that I have a specific kind of relationship with Pern, having gone through all of the books and read them as closely and as best as I could, and that relationship always shows through when I'm writing fic for Pern. So it's possible that I didn't match up with the expectations of the person requesting, even as I did my best to do well by what they did provide for me.

Summary:A short essay about the ways that Homeworld attitudes toward fusion reflect the attitudes of at least some subset of the culture of the United States, both in seeing cross-Gem fusion as against the natural order (leading to discrimination and ostracization) and in the ways that the disapproval of cross-Gem fusion reinforces White (Diamond) Supremacy.
Commentary:
There were three works that I was requested to produce for Fandom Trumps Hate this year, and this is the first that I managed, an essay about the role of fusion in the world of Steven Universe, and how the way that Rebecca Sugar set up Homeworld, the Diamond Authority, and the strict social rules regarding when it's permissible to join with other Gems reflects a lot of the same strictures that people who are queer, trans, or not-white suffer under in a white-supremacist society. That it's a literal White Diamond at the top makes things a little more obvious in some ways, but there's plenty of evidence to support a reading that cross-Gem fusion is meant to be a middle-finger to many of those strictures and the structures that support them. (Along with something from Amethyst about the costs of trying to mold yourself to a structure that intends to hurt you.) So, yes, as always: Keep Beach City Queer.

Additional Tags: Arranged Marriage, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Enemies to Friends, Great General Ballister, Rival General Ambrosius, Great Villain Nimona, expecting the worst
Summary:Ballister, defeated, agrees to marry Ambrosius to keep his people safe. He keeps looking for the barbarism that he expects from an empire that would do such a thing to the defeated, but all he can find are people who are much happier with their life than he is. Except for one entity that has her eye on him to lead her army, and she doesn't believe in "no". Unlike Ambrosius.
Commentary:
The other two works I created for FTH both wanted Nimona as the standing canon. For this one, I went off in a very alternate universe direction, casting Ballister and Ambrosius as rival generals who had met on the battlefield before the story began, with Ambrosius the winner, and proceeded along a pathway where Ballister keeps expecting the worst, and then receives something significantly better than that everywhere he goes. The recipient was hoping for something in the mercyfic category, and I'm not sure I actually hit the brief as fully on the target as they would have liked, but I believe I included a lot of potential dangers and expectations that Ballister has about his status as a prisoner that turn out to be just expectations.
I also recast Nimona a bit, to make her more into the terrifying Great Beast and destroyer that she shows flashes of in the source material, but otherwise gets stopped from following through on, because I needed a greater-scope villain to do more direct threatening of Ballister with, but also so that Ambrosius could mount some kind of heroic rescue. If only Ballister hadn't passed out before most of it happened.
This one took some doing to write up, mostly because I kept going as best as I could, but never fully sure I had what was desired. I'd talked with the recipient beforehand and sent snippets, but with deadlines looming and material back from the beta, I decided perfect is the enemy of complete, and posted what I had. I'd written the thing that I'd set out to do, and now it would be on the recipient to judge whether I'd hit the mark or not. (At least one person has requested a continuation, so I know it worked for at least one person.)

Summary:Ballister asks Nimona if humans can learn magic. Nimona demonstrates how she taught Gloreth all those many years ago, first to Ambrosius, then to Ballister himself. It involves a lot of feelings, and admitting to those feelings in front of other people.
Commentary:
For the other Nimona work, we stayed closer to the canons of the comic and the movie, and instead when exploring on the idea about whether magic could be taught to others from Nimona. Which turns out to be a question that is fraught with history, and perhaps not the best teaching methods, and a detour to see Meredith Blitzmyer, and a lot of feelings come out from Nimona about her past relationships and the time she's spent being herself. The recipient also requested some pronoun fluidity with Nimona, and the beta suggested mixing up the transformed forms more, so I put those things in there, but hopefully it still makes sense and has good flow.
And that will get us through the year's worth of material. Hopefully, I'll be better about things in July and go back to the six-month situation, but no guarantees. Hopefully this year is better for all of us than last year was.
That said, I apparently turned in just over 61k words this year (including one thing that I cross-posted that you've already seen here in this journal). That's a pretty good haul of fic, and it doesn't count all the words here on the journal or in book club. So, once again, a good year's worth of writing, and here's to more of that good writing in the upcoming year, for me and for all of you.
