Well, right now, I'm updating from a remote machine at the moment, as my ISP has conked out for the count. There will be people arriving tomorrow to deal with the problem, however, we're a bit cheesed about it. Soh, I'm taking advantage of the University's wonderful computing resources by hijacking a computer that could probably be doing real work right about now.

I also happening to be listening to some MP3s that I brought across with me. My roomies are both having marathon programming/learning sessions up here, so I'm by myself. I do have reading to do, so I won't waste time too inefficiently. Still, the danger of going stir-crazy is quite high.

And I have a randomish thought for today: Why do villains get cooler music scores? This is both a movie and video game trend as far as I have figured... the themes we always remember are the ones for the villains, bosses, and bad dudes. Can anyone explain why this happens?

Oh, and tomorrow should be a lot of fun. More details after I survive it.

Current dramatic convention gives villains an entrance, which calls for dramatic emphasis. Hence emphatic music. It also tends to play during dramatic moments ("The world is mine, muahahaha!"), which are also often the memorable bits.

Dramatic moments for the heroes tend to be character moments ("I've...always loved you...", ect etc), and thus get either the romantic themes or the main title themes.

This is very true. Williams explains that Luke's theme, to continue with my SW consideration, is a slowed version of the Main Theme. Also, rather than brass fanfare, he changes it to horns and clarinets. Ben's theme is again slowed from that, and he often will use clarinets and violins, to soften it further.

Any romantic moments use Leia's theme, which is designed to be romantic and calming, rather than energetic and stirring (and therefore less memorable).

Throne room? I don't remember Ben's theme there... Are you perhaps confusing it with the Imperial March at Vader's death scene? It's played on a single flute or f. horn (I don't remember which). Extremely powerful.
