Just tomorrow's left.
Dec. 15th, 2005 12:45 amAnd that's a great thing. Spend a couple hours looking nice and hoping that all the grades look good and answering questions from anyone curious enough to happen by, and then we're done. One semester in the books. It's a nice feeling, for as much as I complained about it, that it's done. I've been told second semester is a little easier on the brainmeats, and I hope that's true.
Pulling a story forward, it appears that the Ford Motor Co. has either grown some testicles or crunched enough numbers to notice that they might be taking a significant financial loss by restricting their advertising. One way or another, they've decided that they will at least have a nominal advertising presence in gay magazines.
Sam and Max are coming back! Woo-hoo!
A peek into the creative mind. Someone who can have nice long strings of thought like that is probably a creative. Or just distracted easily. Perhaps both (nobody says those two categories are mutually exclusive). Everyone, however, can benefit from the use of the Gremlin Principle when describing problems that they're not sure about. As someone who's used the gremlin idea in reference to my computer, it works. Believe me. And every now and then, when I come across a solution that I'm not entirely sure how it works, just that it does, I can point to the Gremlin principle and say "Well, I stopped them, but I don't know if I got rid of them."
I have to admit, at times it can be interesting belonging to a fandom that is cool enough to permit what is technically IP infringement, but is instead seen as quality control standards to ensure that things do well. It also helps that the fandom is usually honest enough to discontinue products that have been licensed. Admittedly, doesn't happen all the time, but at the very least, very few groups will start a project that's been licensed. Whether this sort of free distribution-until-licensed is a burgeoning model of come decentralized, p2p-enabled, currency-liberated new world organization is to be seen, but I have to admit that it's a unique sort of niche. I wonder whether or not there are fansubbers of our programs in other countries, doing the same thing... and whether they stop at releases or not.
Also, as a whetting for what will probably be a much fuller post come January one - the year in forty questions or so. (It's been around - I can claim any lineage I like on it.)
1) Was 2005 a good year for you? On the whole, I'd say yes, it was.
2) What was your favorite moment of the year? Good question. Bad as it will sound, I think it's being in the Rose Bowl at the beginning of the year. The rest has been business-as-usual for the most part.
3) What was your least favorite moment of the year? Any part of the year where I was needlessly stressed and panicky. That means most of the academic period for this year. And much of when I was looking for a job, as well.
4) Where were you when 2005 began? Either in California at Universal or asleep, depending on which time zone you're counting.
- 5) Who were you with? The marching band. This year will be the first in three where I'm not celebrating a new year with the marching band.
6) Where will you be when 2005 ends? I don't know. Possibly with family. Maybe with friends if a good party pops up. Just as easily, I could be by myself, even if surrounded by people.
- 7) Who will you be with when 2005 ends? Depends on where I am, really.
8) Did you keep your new years resolution of 2005? Nope. I don't make resolutions - I tend to forget them.
- 9) Do you have a new years resolution for 2006? See above.
10) Did you fall in love in 2005? I don't think I have, no. I've had a few friendships blossom, and I tried to get a date or two, but no, no falling in love. Not yet, anyway. (Question 11-14 related to If yes - with whom, are you still, do they know, do you regret it, in order.)
15) Did you breakup with anyone in 2005? No. That may be a qualified no, depending on how I want to view my circumstances, but I'm saying no.
16) Did you make any new friends in 2005? Plenty. I found bastions of square pegs, many refusing to be bashed into round holes, and thus I expanded my sphere of acquaintances and friends considerably.
- 17) Who are your favorite new friends? I don't think I can say any one, or any group, as a favorite, but they're all helpful.
18) What was your favorite month of 2005? Well, if the highlight of the year happened at the beginning, January's a good candidate, but April's probably the best month I had - in that I made a graduation, turned in a thesis, and began to ready myself for graduate schooling.
19) Did you travel outside of the US in 2005? No. I haven't been outside the United States in my life. I've been as far as one can go without actually leaving the United State, but no, I haven't been outside. Not even to Canada, which is a few hours away.
20) How many different states did you travel to in 2005?CA, IL... yeah. I think that's it.
21) Did you lose anybody close to you in 2005? *pokes memory* Nothing stands out, so I don't think so. Of course, that could be a fabrication.
22) Did you miss anybody in the past year Yes. It's cold and lonely being out here in Grad School land. I miss not having
welah around to talk random anime and computer and game things with. I missed not having a nice social group to fit snugly into for this year, but I'm getting better at avoiding feeling like an exile. I miss not having someone to cuddle with and go on dates and kiss and all of those other things. There's a lot that I miss this year.
23) What was your favorite movie that you saw in 2005? Actually in a theater? (That narrows the candidates considerably). I'd say I liked seeing Steamboy the most, even with the slightly botched ADR.
24) What was your favorite song from 2005? Well, I've abandoned the radio for the most part when it comes to music, but this year, I'd say that since I was introduced to Avenue Q's unique soundtrack, The Internet Is For Porn could certainly qualify as my favorite song.
- 25) What was your favorite record from 2005? I dunno, but if I get the new Trans-Siberian Orchestra record before year's end, that's probably going to be the favorite.
- 26) How many concerts did you see in 2005? One! (The rest was Open Mic night with
rain_luong, I think.)
- 27) Did you have a favorite concert in 2005? Dear Friends: Music from Final Fantasy definitely rocked the house.
28) Did you drink a lot of alcohol in 2005? Nope. There was some social drinking spaced out throughout the year. I've certainly drank more this year than I have in previous, though.
- 29) did you do a lot of drugs in 2005? Ah, no. Closest I ever got was contact buzzes.
30) How many people did you sleep with in 2005 The defendant pointedly invokes his Fifth Amendment rights on this question. Move along, citizens.
31) Did you do anything you are ashamed of this year? More than likely.
- 32) What was it? I've forgotten it, whatever it was. Which is probably for the better. Next question.
33) What was the worst lie someone told you in 2005? That would assume that I knew someone was lying to me. Perhaps the worst lie I was told was that "The Iraqi people will welcome us as liberators." or some other Bushism.
34) Did you treat somebody badly in 2005? I may have. I hope that their memories are somewhat sieve-like on my lack of tact or improper behavior. You know, forgive us our faults as we forgive each other's, and all that.
35) Did somebody treat you badly in 2005? Most likely. I may be exaggerating the degree of "badly", however, on any given offense to make myself feel better. I have no idea whether I was deserving of poor treatment or not when it happened, and I've probably justified it in some way that I was, through one fault or another. But my memory again eludes me as to specific offenses. Perhaps they will resurface if it happens again.
36) How much money did you spend in 2005? More than I can afford, and that was just on my college expenses for this year. I can't give you exact figures, but I guarantee that it was more than my income for this year.
37) What was your proudest moment of 2005? Graduation, I think. Thesis done and completed, degree earned, honors awarded, got one of those nice Latin phrases attached as well. Even though it was a stepping-stone to this semester and the "real" degree (and I'll still look at it like that), it does mean that I managed to complete a course of study.
- 38) What was your most embarrassing moment of 2005? Probably getting chewed out by my housemates for one thing or another. That's also some of the things that have incited the most rage, by the way. It may not be a great idea to embarrass me, because I'll either wail in despair or get really pissed off.
39) If you could go back in time to any moment of 2005 and change something, what would it be? I'd move the football at the Rose Bowl just a few inches, so that instead of grazing and going through the uprights, it got solidly blocked and then fallen upon, and I'd have a Rose Bowl win. Then this year would have been much more manageable.
40) What are your plans for 2006? Right now? It's mostly going to be defined by three major blocks - Winter Semester, Summer Work, Fall Semester. Perhaps with a little time in between for something like Anime Central, and if things fall down and get played right, perhaps a little travel in my future to a few new locales. That said, it looks to be a year full of academic aggravations and tuition turmoil. Unless, that is, someone in the various legislatures decides that education of all sorts is worth funding properly and makes some serious reparations. Even then, I still may wonder. It's going to be a similar sort of year as this one was, just with tougher courses.
