Week's end.
Mar. 24th, 2006 10:23 pmNew icon. Thanks,
2dlife, who I believe constructed the whole thing for me. Now I'll show off the shiny, using some of my new space.
So, tomorrow morning, nice and early, I get to meet
annaonthemoon. And then I get to give her the tour of Ann Arbor and make sure she gets outfitted with the proper garments (you see, she went to a different Big Ten school) for her return trip. We think it should be an enjoyable weekend for both of us, as I'm not planning on doing much for schoolwork over the weekend. It'll be a nice relaxation from my work.
Of course, I also would like to move out of where I am soon. Mostly because my mental state probably isn't being helped by being in the place I am. It's probably as much me not being involved (mostly because of no opportunities) in things as it is the perception that the only time any of my housemates want to talk to me is to get annoyed at me for something. So, that's just a bad situation, and I'd probably be best just leaving it alone.
There are other stories, more important, like the sheriff being prosecuted for saving lives during the hurricane in New Orleans. Commandeered some federal supplies, he did, and distributed it to the people while the federal agency was dickering around. And so now he'll possibly get charged and/or prosecuted.
Also, we find that there is hope in the youth of America (not that we ever really lost hope in them - they often seem to show up both my generation and the ones before us), as a sixteen year old gay man shows off some titanium-alloy nuts, talking about why he should be able to marry. Read his own account of the story. If it is as he says, then there's some seriously cool stuff going on there. Regardless of what you believe religiously, there are things granted by the government to married couples that are useful. Why deny those rights to a group simply because it's not an XX/XY pairing? (And there are probably good grounds for many of those pairings wanting to adopt, too - could certainly help the pro-life coalitions, too, if they want to make the argument that people shouldn't be aborting because there are people willing to adopt.)
Alabama's NAACP slames the War on Some Drugs. And rightly so - jails are filled with plenty of people who might have toked up once and been busted for it. If you have an educated public, and a public that is able to choose (so we're advocating a little more than just health awareness) whether to use drugs, then you might find the abuse percentages going down. Admittedly, there are still probably some drugs that are worth regulating and showing as public health risks, but they tend to be harder than weed. Plus, there's probably a disproportionate number of poor and minority people in those already-overcrowding jails because of minor drug infractions. Makes me wonder whether corrections and the military are taking each other's populations - once drug-charged, then they might want to get these people to join up in the military on the premise that nobody else would want them. So one drug charge could result in getting killed an ocean or two away.. Add on to this the regulations that the Federal Government has so lovingly put on that makes anyone who's had a drug charge ineligible for federal aid, and you've got a great recruiting tool there. Perfect for shipping off your undesirables. Not that I can put up any proof, of course, but it does sound like a great possibility.
Anyway, since
annaonthemoon will be arriving early tomorrow morning, I should probably think about going to bed before too long. Although, if I can, the temptation of watching the school's hockey game is great... we'll see what happens. After watching the goalie get hung out to dry, it might be better to get sleep.
