Today was a wash, even though it probably was a very important and productive day. For my feeling good about myself - utter and complete zero. For saying things that needed to be said, much better score. Reduced to tears at least once, brought to anger at least once, it's been a roller coaster of a day. And it's all because trying to please everybody often ends up in pleasing nobody, because then I look like I'm a liar. And none of it had to do with work. Talked with [livejournal.com profile] annaonthemoon about the progress she's made so far while she's been here, about the necessity of standing on her own, finding her own life in the town, and taking a positive, problem-solving approach to setbacks rather than a run-and-hide strategy. (Doctor, heal thyself. Shut uuuuup.) Things are still in flux with her as she finds out just how badly she was misinformed about housing and employment. As for a social life, I'd give her another month, not just for stability, but the town is relatively dead at night when the students aren't here. Once school starts, things should pick up. If nothing else, she could go down to Goodnight Gracie's and hang out there on the open mic night. I'm trying to give a friend a hand or two in getting adjusted to the town, and then I do plan on telling her "Okay, training wheels are off. Go find your own path." I firmly expect her to have a very nice circle of friends of her own and that between work and socialization, she won't have much time at all for me. Which will be true, because I'll be stuck here in front of this keyboard reading six twenty-page reports week in and week out. It's going to be ugly and graceless, but my studies take precedence, and anyone trying to hang on from there either adjusts to that reality or gets picked as an object in a game of Sink. (No wonder I can't get a date.)

Stanford band suspended. Again.

Waaaaaant. Have nothing to house it in, but want it anyway. (Actually, already have a housing for the computer. Would have to get another to justify the other case, and while that's neat, I don't think I can afford that any time soon.)

Alaskan pipeline shut down, gas shocks expected. As if it isn't enough of a shock to a lot of the people who are balking at $3 US gas prices, this'll probably make it worse.

Cafe where you can beat on the waitstaff. Bet if you start a fight with someone else in the cafe, though, you'll get thrown out and arrested. Catharsis is interesting, but, well, that might be taking things a little too far.

Help me caption the following article. It's about a party where the idea is to masturbate as much and as orgasmically as possible to raise awareness about safer sex. Pure wankery for a good cause, perhaps?

Speaking of sex, it's the music, of course, that makes kids and teens have early sex. And there's a tiny blurb about all the other context going on in a kids life that might contribute more to the decision than music, but who reads past the headline? And with that scintillating piece of reporting, we see that Reuters photographers have been doctoring photos. Reuters has at least, admitted it, but this only makes it harder to trust anything at all in the world. Like, did 5,000+ people in Tel Aviv protest the conflict?

Feds change state laws on welfare - pursuing education is not an acceptable thing to do and still receive welfare with. There must be work! Regardless as to whether the education will actually pay off more in the long run (you know, higher education meaning better job and taxes and such), or other stuff, there must be work! Feed the machine, sacrifice your own dreams just to survive...

...yeah. Rather than, you know, giving temporary assistance, like it's supposed to, more people are going to be forced into working something dead-end that takes away their improvement time and probably keeps them on welfare longer. Nice going. And with a potential attempt to make the National Guard mobilizable by only the President's say, one could have local Guardsmen doing things to local homeless to ensure they work.

American Madrassas, which appears to be more than just your average sort of VBS, but one that's training the next generations of Freds, Pats, and Jerries. Or Stephens. Stephen Baldwin, to be precise, and his crusade against an adult shop. Well, at least it's not Scientology. Not much better, but it's not that.

Anyway, going to bed. Sincerely hoping I'm not overracting to anything, and that issues before me clear up in amiable ways. I'd rather everyone was happy. Including me. If that doesn't happen, that means in some way that I've failed. And I don't take failure well.
