Just by poking around, I managed to fix the problem I was having with flash not giving me sound - it was looking in the wrong direction. A quick edit and sound was restored, so I got to see how the timing worked on The Echo. Making the mod made Firefox crash, though, so I got to test the Session Restore Function, and it works as advertised, although it reloads the pages fresh, rather than the cached versions that were there. For something that changes links quickly, though, that means some things get lost. Oh, well. Such is the transient nature of things. But welcome back, sound in Flash. We missed you so. And Firefox 2 has been behaving nicely for me - any connection problems seem to be the fault of either the modem or the router. With the new tab setup, though, RadialContext may become a very important piece in the operation again. Unless there's an extension or preference setting that lets me return it to the older style with the shrinking tabs and the one close button.

Spent a good portion of the day with [livejournal.com profile] welah, catching up on life, eating at Cici's, and watching Kill Bill vol. 1 all the way through (I'd only caught the last third or so.). So I'll have to go back and watch vol. 2, as well as several of the other movies that he has. Funny that he's moved back, and now I'm starting to think about moving away after all is said and done. And I will move away, if the job will have me. That's the tough part, of course - leaving the place you've grown up in.

A positive step from New Jersey. (Also a very hot topic for today in the blog environment) While they didn't institute that same-sex marriage must be legalized, the courts did decides that "the unequal dispensation of rights and benefits to committed same-sex partners can no longer be tolerated under our state Constitution". They told the legislature to find a solution. There will apparently be bills introduced to make same-sex marriage legal. (Noted in the article - same-sex couples can already apply for domestic partner benefits. This sounds like someone went for and will get the whole ball of wax, including all the other marriage benefits.)

LEDs at 160 lumens means bright, power-efficient lights. Although that depends on whether we like LED light and can stand it in great quantities... and possibly brighter headlights. Oy. In a much more crafty and creative project, Holy Sliding Shelf Unit, Batman! Those are the kinds of bookcases that we need.

After a little bit about why atheists, nontheists and agnostics aren't necessarily stepping up to the plate, Wired publishes a call to arms from the New Atheists, that says not only is belief in $DEITY problematic, but respect for the belief in $DEITY is equally problematic. Atheists, to make ground, must be willing to say they're atheists proudly and to convert those who are wavering.

R.U. Sirius, in consultation with the director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office, tells us that the Military Comissions Act doesn't suspend habeas for citizens, assuming that the executive actually follows the law. They're about as optimistic as I am about whether the executive will constrain themselves to just stripping the habeas and appeals rights of noncitizens considered to be "enemy combatants". We'll have to see if and when the Executive decides to overstep... or whether they've already done so in the signing statement. In other privacy-related news, while it's being sold as a the best biometric tech around, people don't want to give up their fingerprints because it's associated with being arrested for a crime. Sounds like the people in Oz have good heads on their shoulders. Besides, putting biometrics in a database still makes it hackable. I wouldn't want my fingerprint to go elsewhere as much as I don't want my identity or anything else to fall into a thief's hands.

Great news from Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert - his speaking voice is back. After having lost it nearly 18 months ago, returning to his nursery rhymes helped him reclick and reconnect and remap his brain to refind the things that were lost. And through rhyme and repetition, things seem to have returned to normal. So that's happy news for tonight.

And no post, it seems, is complete without mentioning sex in some way. Considering this article was linked or sent to me by no less than three people, it most likely deserves attention. Although it could be considered a bit of a "Well, duh", it appears that science keeps confirming that having regular sex is pretty good for your body. Probably pretty good for the mind, too. And for those who have wonderfully loving relationships, good for feelings and all those other sorts of things.

Last marks for tonight - Practice subversive optimism. Be confident in the rightness of your cause (but base not this confidence on blind faith without research), and optimistic that the right cause will win out in the end.

Re: the new athiests--
Great, yet another self-righteous religious affiliation trying to cram its doctrine down folks' throats.
have they not learned -anything-?
