...I did a concert! Yay me. I did not keel over, and I got to do the Rocky and Bullwinkle dance, as well as see graduate staff doing it as well. Very, very, highly amusing.

I also did a study session. Finally, I came home and watched Playboy's 50th on A&E. Actually, a good thing, that, because I noticed a couple of things.

The first was in the way the cameras were. In the historical segment on Marilyn Monroe being a centerfold, it was a completely nude picture. In fact, a lot of the objects and pictures were uncensored with respect to toplessness. However, people who were topless were immediately blurred out, as well as one of the pictures in a segment. This seems arbitrary. Perhaps the rules are different?

The second is something of Playboy's, and Hugh M. Hefner's status as uniquely American institutions. After all, we're still fairly conservative with regards to open sexuality and things like that. Yet, at the same time, we see Playboy surviving 50 years, talking about not just sex, but politics, culture, and other things. It is, as it always claims, "Entertainment for Men.," and yet, there are a large amount of women who have to have bought into the philosophy of Playboy, not just as centerfolds, but as interviewers, contributors, and people involved in the other things that Hef does. It makes me wonder: do most men want to be Hugh Hefner? Or is there something else about Playboy that draws us into it and has us keeping it, of whatever age we may be, under our beds? Would it be better for our culture if we could read and display Playboy openly?

All difficult questions. Perhaps Hef really did hit upon something when he started the magazine.

Anyway, I'm still procrastinating. I think I'm looking for source material, but it could very well be that I just want this whole thing to end without having to do much more. I need a day off that I can relax to, and I don't think I'll get one any time soon... oh well. Semester ends Wednesday... with an exam that day... not as the last class, but still...
