Yep, that's it! And I use the [pre] tags for the gallows, yes.

There is also the graphic at http://oz-expression.nu/web/lj/hangman-0.gif (accrete by one for each wrong letter), which I thought you had, and now I have to go look up [pre] tags.

All the <pre> tag does is tell the Web browser that whatever follows is formatted exactly the way it appears, so don't change it. Otherwise, web browsers normally ignore line breaks and extra spaces, so you can get a jumble of weird stuff when you were hoping for ASCII art.

It's good for people who don't use images.

Precisely. Most browsers will also render that tag in a non-serif monospace font according to their style sheets because you're telling them "hands off" and they want anyone seeing it to know that such things have been done.
