Greetings! This is the Write Every Day Check-in post for 05 August 02019.

I haven't exactly been doing research today, as the fic that I'm reading is longform and very MCU (The "Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail" series on AO3 and a spinoff series from it, "Yours, G. Miles", also on AO3). It's very good, though, in the way that people come back to themselves after traumatic events and forge their lives onward in spite of suh things. It's relatable in ways that I don't really need to go into, as I have neither been frozen for 70 years nor turned into a machine for killing, but sometimes the situations you get yourself into take a long time to dig yourself out of, and there are still some things that can provoke very strong reactions while you're getting out. Or there are times where you're not entirely sure that the things that happened to you really happened, and whether you're just imagining them. Having a good set of friends to help ground you in reality is important in those times. And I hope that you have people who will tell you those things. And people who will beta your work, even if they're not at all familiar with the fandom(s) involved.

I managed a little progress on writing today, as I'm trying to get around a plot point where it would be easier to resort to physical violence, but I realized that it would be the wrong characterization for someone to escalate that quickly and easily when they really need someone to stay with them to handle the parts they're not good at.

A few more short paragraphs today! (Also many notes taken, but at this point that's almost counter-productive, so I won't brag about that.)

Also, a handful of comments left, including one on a fic I'm reading. After a long period of silence, I'm trying to become more fannishly active as a reader.

but sometimes the situations you get yourself into take a long time to dig yourself out of, and there are still some things that can provoke very strong reactions while you're getting out. Very true. I love seeing these kinds of insights in fic. M.

(it occurs to me I might should preemptively warn people off of butterfly dreams because—it's not gaslighting, I don't think? but I bet it hits the same buttons.)

Yeah, that would be a good warning to include, then, if it's about perceptions of reality.

I was going to poke a bit at the new sci-fi story I'd started, and ended up writing 768 words despite being very tired, so yay. Plus, there was some plotting/planning for the novel. I think I might take the next few days with the novel for plotting and planning rather than actual manuscript writing. At this point, I need to take some time to think about what I'm going to write so I won't end up with a 500,000-word meandering draft where I have to somehow dig out the 100,000-word novel hopefully hiding in there.

That sounds difficult. I fear that if I went to write an actual novel-sized work, the draft would be my outline as well as the draft.

6th: 702 words on a little kissing ficlet for 15kisses. Other than not being sure about the final line, I think it's done. I'll sleep on it. :-)

The series you're reading sounds amazing! I'll have to check it out. For lots of reasons, I am a sucker for found- or made-family stories. I think it's one of the reasons I gravitated so enthusiastically to MCU fic. Anyway, I appreciate the thoughtful rec.

I submitted a short story to Uncanny. Talk about a reach goal. Still, it's a story I'm proud of, and I wanted to try it. I also edited half of Chp. 7 in the "ambush project" novel, so I'm back on that horse. Yay!

It is very much a found family story. And the inspired-by series about G. Miles is even more so such a thing, given the circumstances of the characters.

Go you on the submission! Hope they take it and print it and pay you well for it.

I was very busy on the 5th (we're sprucing up the bookshop for a party this weekend) so only (heh, "only") did some work on the nonfiction project. Made some progress there, at least.

No you didn't but after four degrees I'm done. After an injury ended my surgical career I turned professor. I'm on the other end of the torture learning
