Greetings! This is the Write Every Day Check-in post for 12 August 02019.

I'm beginning to see how people can veer off of their established canons into better places, as one of the series that I'm following for the potential it has for magical-girl stories and the exercise of artifacts of world-ending strength on the regular seems to think that jokes that trigger the embarrassment squick are go-to surefire humor bits. Something about fish, guests, and writers' rooms, or something.

I got to the newest volume that will be subjected to the Giving of Grief, and waltzed my way through the first chapter, realizing that there's a particular pattern to the work that's going on and seeing how it will stack up to the ones already gone before. I'm not sure how much I don't like this idea of writing a trilogy by writing one thing, then looping back to the beginning and writing it again from another perspective, and then moving forward from there in the third work. If it was so important to include the second volume's material to the plot, it really should have been included in the first volume. I also have a bad feeling about this particular work, as in the span of how far I've gotten, a baby saved from disease has gained control of one of the dragon hatchlings, and there's already signs that she's somehow managed to Florence Nightingale the person that saved her as a baby.

1,060 on the distraction, dumb fun side WIP, and it's done now, so I can no longer use it to avoid working on the main WIP, which I added 207 words to today. I know why I keep wanting to hare off into other side WIPs: the main WIP is far more serious than my usual sort of writing, so I keep wanting a kind of pressure release for my desire for lolz and romance. Inching ever closer to a complete draft of the main WIP though!

Excellent work. Sometimes we need a pressure valve just to change gears and get away from the mood we've been in.

Managed to get exactly one sentence in before I got hit by Surprise Adulting that then ate the rest of my day.

Yep! And it was at least one thing that I wasn't worrying about, as the day progressed: I didn't need to find time and focus for an alibi sentence.

One sentence is still writing. And Surprise Adulting is a pain to deal with.

There has been a LOT of Surprise Adulting, these last two months. Not my favorite thing.

Not mine, either. If I have to adult, I'd love some warning beforehand so I can marshal my defenses.

I keep getting told the timeline is one thing and then it SURPRISE becomes something else.

Ugh. Do you have any temporal vortexes or known time travelers to shoo (or do violence to, if that's what it takes) so you can get back on a stable timeline?

No, I don't, more's the pity. Although honestly, if time travelers made themselves known to me right now, I might petition to get to come with.

I worked on the bookshop novel, after ignoring it for weeks. I made some changes that had percolated for a while, so that felt satisfying. It's still such a mess -- especially from my last attempt to organize it! But I think I can knock it into shape. Eventually.

so getyourwordsout challenged us to write as much as we could in two days, from midnight just past to two midnights from now, but first set a goal for how much we could? and I explicitly said I did not want to hyperfocus for hours on end for this purpose, and with that in mind, I said 4K?

Also, is that the right name for the trope/issue where people fall in love with the person who nurses them back to health?

Not much fiction, but wound up writing a comment to the HHS (department of Health and Human Services in the States), re the proposed policy change intended to strip medical antidiscrimination protection on the basis of gender identity/presentation. Rather went off. Phrases like 'blatant civil rights violation' and 'stealth evangelism' might've gotten thrown around.

Oooh, someone deserved a telling-off. Sometimes those are the kinds of lettesrs and comments that are best to read (and that you wish they did read).

(Ugh, I can only hope that if 2020 moves away from this, everyone will realize the smoking crater left and pitch in to get things back on track. Or even maybe stop listening to the people with the money that think this was a good idea. Or possibly eat the rich people for their role in it. Something.)

On Day 12, I edited Chp. 12 and got a rejection note on the story I'd submitted to the reach magazine--expected, but still painful in that way rejections have. *sighs* Anyway, onward! ;-)

Aww. Too bad on the rejection, but now you have one. Which means you can start working toward your first sale!

If only it were my first... *sighs* I've actually gotten pretty good about the sting of rejection, and I've sold a couple of things here and there that make the rejections seem less painful. That said, it is never NOT going to suck a little. ;-) I appreciate the encouragement and support. :-)

Took the weekend off and came back to my desk feeling fresher and more productive yesterday. A solid 400 words on a difficult section! Plus a few comments!

The re-telling you mention sounds like a writing exercise rather than a plan for a trilogy. Hm. M.

It really does, doesn't it? But it seems to be the plan for this book, to tell the same story from a different point of view so as to get a more complete coverage.
