Greetings! This is the Write Every Day Check-In Post for 6 November 02019.

Civic engagement was on my mind yesterday, in the sense of the first Tuesday in November is the day when most general elections happen in the United States. petra offered drabble commentfic in various fandoms for those who had voted in their last election, whether that was on the specific day or whenever the last election was for a person. (May still be offering?)

I suggested the Great British Bake-Off, since the era that would be written in was the one where Mel and Sue were the hosts, and there was a lot of puns about bread involved in the 100 words. Which I could read in Mel and Sue's voices, and it was delightful. A great reward. (My state no longer gives out "I Voted" stickers, but instead has a tear-off strip at the top of the ballot for someone to work with, which is far less fun than being able to sport something about one's civic engagement. I personally would love for them to mail out stickers like "I Voted: It's like punching a Nazi, but safely," but there's that pesky thing about being nonpartisan. Admittedly, I would have thought that "Nazis deserve to be punched" was a nonpartisan sentiment, but these are the times we live in.

Today, in writing, I bounced through a couple different assignments. One is just getting started in its shape, so it's in the proving drawer at the moment. Another, I have an idea for set pieces and things that will be happening further on in the piece, aiming for a specific goal, but I have to fill the intervening space, and I'm following my own advice on this matter: Write the thing, no matter how odd or off it seems, so long as it gets you there, and then let your beta have at it to help you figure out if it makes any sense at all later. Draft first, revise second, tinker third. It's served me reasonably well so far, and it is likely to continue doing so as I run through this stretch of assignments. Still one more to arrive soon, and then it's going to be a little bit of a juggling act for the next few weeks.

Day 6 -- 325 words that will easily grow into more. Turning the trials of the day into words. In the process learning several useful things about how the nominally not hostages (they are totally hostages, just no one wants to say that out loud) live.

Not entirely sure how many words, as they're on the work computer - eek! Bad Chanter, no cookie. But I definitely got several paragraphs in during quiet moments.

Day 7: 101 words and a thorough edit on TT fic #5; 60 words on TT fic #6 (which I started last night); and I got TT fic #4 back from beta and am thinking through some of the changes I need to make to that, mostly POV-tightening and more emotion.

(This is too many balls in the air! I need to finish at least one of these ASAP!)

Day 6: edited just one section of the draft for a net of 11 words. But also wrote 2,682 words on the WIP, whew.

Those are sometimes the best stories where you're not sure where they go. Sometimes they lead to pure awesome.

Wow, yeah, "nonpartisan" now means, "Don't show that you abhor the party that associates itself with Nazis for votes." Ugh.

I voted early (10/26), and it was awesome! For the first time, they had an electronic check-in book, so they just scanned the card we'd gotten in the mail, and we signed the iPad, got our paper ballots, put them in the machine, watched our votes verified and recorded, heard the ballot drop into the lockbox, and left. It took maybe two minutes from walking in the building to leaving. Truly, it was awesome.

I wrote 1285 words total on Day 6, including a writing exercise at the student club I moderate and then the rest on the fanfic I'm working on.

That's interesting, having a kind of set date for elections; we don't have anything like it. Elections are always on a Sunday, though, so it's easier for most of the volunteers and voters, since shops and lots of other things are usually closed on Sundays. Coincidently, I voted today, too, though; I happened to got the postal voting letters for the parish council elections (which are every six years and postal only).
My tally for yesterday is 2,9k with 2,4k for NaNo.

It is good, in that it's the same, but also, it's terrible, because it's not a national holiday (-ists don't want Undesirables voting, which they would if everyone had the day off) and it also means the start of campaign season stretches interminably backwards.

Hi... okay if I drop in? I didn't plan on doing 'write every day', but I'm trying to finish on a WIP and having daily check-ins is quite helpful. I have a White Collar fic, now at almost 18,500 words, and planned for about 27,000. I write extremely slowly and until now I barely got 100-200 words a day, but then I listened to a podcast that suggested to sit and write and ignore attempts to think and edit. They said that it's possible to get 1000 words in half-an-hour. So I tried it, and now I'm managing about 500
