Snowflake Challenge 2023 #4: Canon Ball!
Jan. 7th, 2023 11:38 amChallenge #4 asks us to do what fandom does very well and show what we read into the media we're fans of.
A lot of my interest in various canons is about the characters who aren't always in the spotlight and what they might be doing. And a lot of the fic that I write is extrapolation from the canon, either into the future, or what might have come into being to make the requested pairing happen.
If JKR wasn't a TERF and a terrible person, this could be a spot where I would talk about how the magical education systems in the United States actually work, compared to her belief that the system of houses and private schools survived unscathed through the years.
Having spent as much time as I have in the Dragonriders of Pern, I mostly choose to ignore the idea that the Records are perpetually in disarray and that knowledge is forever being lost from not being written down and not organized. There is a Master Archivist, therefore there is a classification and organization system, and it is drilled into every Harper before they leave the Hall. They might all believe their own system is better and use that, instead, but there's a system in place for organization and retention of knowledge.
I think Calvin never really loses Hobbes was he grows up. And that he and Susie at least try dating each other at some point in their lives. I have no firm opinion on how that turns out, nor how many times they try dating each other.
As a general rule, I tend to believe that there are more queer characters in any given canon, but that for reasons of marketing and attempted audience appeal, their queerness is never actually acknowledged openly. Miaka and Yui, Yukari-sensei and Minamo-sensei, Allen and Hitomi and Van (and Merle.) Chuck and Ned and Olive, Rainbow Day and Fluttershy and Applejack. (Possibly the Cutie Mark Crusaders, when they get older.) We're starting to see more of it in print, and hear more of it in podcast, but not see as much on screen, unless the entire production process is outside of a major studio or a AAA developer. (Unfortunately, the greater queer visibility has created a greater backlash against queer visibility.)
At this point, I'm pretty sure that the Mushroom Kingdom and the Koopa kingdom have formalized treaties about where the borders are between their various holdings, their alliances, and the like, and the constant kidnapping of Peach and subsequent calling out of the plumbers for rescue is a formality and a way of making sure none of the rulers get overwhelmed by the bureaucracy and the demands of the court, and giving everyone some exercise and keeping the troops in shape. The most difficult part of it is figuring out how to be creative for the next round, and making sure when there are others involved that they understand this is a gentlemanly contest rather than an all-out war and to pace themselves accordingly. Call it a Doozer-Fraggle-Gorg kind of relationship between everyone.
I firmly believe the Kingdom Hearts multiverse is connected to everywhere else, not merely the Disney and Square properties, but anywhere that hasn't been seen or shown hasn't had something important enough to require the presence of the Keyblade wielders. (Except in fic, of course.)
(This is kind of difficult, actually, because I tend to take the position that canon is a core and that if details need tweaking to make a story work, then do the tweak and don't worry as much about it, so long as the core is recognizable and mostly present. If you set a prompt in front of me, I'll be able to say "Oh, okay, for this pairing to work, this detail has to change, so for this story, this event happened, but turned out differently." Or "This AU has to happen, so these characters map here and these events map here, and that means Adrien is Cinderella, Marinette is the Baker, Gabriel is the witch, Nathalie is the giantess, and Émilie is the Narrator. (Who are the Princes? Chloé and Lila.)" So each fic that I write probably has an addition to canon in it, but those additions may not be consistent outside of their own stories.)
If you got the opportunity to add one thing to the canon of any of your fandoms, what would that be? Maybe there’s a character who didn’t get much of a backstory/storyline and you’d like to do something with them, maybe a show was axed too soon and you had thoughts on what could happen in a subsequent season, maybe there’s a new episode you’d like to have added.
Challenge #4
In your own space, add something to your fandom’s canon.
