Write Every Day: 01 August 02019
Aug. 1st, 2019 06:58 pmGreetings! This is the Write Every Day Check-in post for 1 August 02019. If you are unfamiliar with Write Every Day, it's a traveling show, bouncing between spaces, staying at one particular spot for a month, usually, before wandering on, meant as a place where people who are doing writing can check in about the progress they've made. The minimum amount of writing involved is usually the alibi sentence, a sentence written so that you can say that you spent time writing today. The maximum could be quite significant. Some people keep count with words, some of us keep count with where we are in projects, assignments, and stories. There's no wrong way to participate, so whether you're working on fiction, nonfiction, personal writing, meta, background, research, a thesis, or any other kind of writing, the writing you do counts as participation. And while this is an encouragement to write every day, there's no penalty if you have to skip one. Or two. Or an entire month. Come and go as you need to. Write on days that you can, skip on days that you don't have to. There's no pressure, no requirement, no obligation to participate past what you want to or are already doing.
Comment if you want to participate, indicating that you wrote today. You can provide as much or as little detail as you want, and I'll add you to the tally of people for today. As the month grows, the tally list starts looking pretty impressive.
I only started with Write Every Day recently, after someone on my circle (
alexseanchai) hosted for a month. The idea of doing a little writing every day makes sense, and when you're someone who does a lot of exchange writing, like I do, you have to be thinking or writing on a story almost all the time to make your deadlines.
Of course, when most of your writing is for exchanges and assignments, you don't get to talk a lot about the specifics of your writing, on the off chance that someone might see you talking about it and know who is writing for you, or they might be friends with someone who you're writing for, and that ruins the surprise that comes with exchange fic.
Which is to say, I hope that you'll help me through the month with your check-ins and your comments about what you're writing on. Or interesting things that you've come across. Because I have to be vague about what I'm doing much of the time.
I did some work today on an assignment, left a long comment on today's post related to the Giving of Grief (a reread of the Dragonriders of Pern franchise, knowing full well that it was not going to have aged gracefully since I last read parts of it), and continued to build out my post queue for said Giving of Grief, while managing the thrice-cursed practice of adulting. Let me know what writing you've been up to.

Date: 2019-08-02 02:24 am (UTC)I revised the story I "finished" yesterday, sent it to beta, got it back from beta, and revised it some more. Currently it needs a final sentence and a title -- wish me luck!

Date: 2019-08-02 03:06 am (UTC)Q: I'm in New Zealand, so I'm a day ahead of everyone else. Is it okay if I check-in for my-todays, or will that overly complicate your tallying? I know it's a bit of a hassle, sorry. *shakes tiny fist at timezones*
I currently have a couple of flashfics on the go, plus a WIP that's part of a series (AKA the episode-related fic), and three longfic WIPs that are starting to get a bit stale and dusty with neglect. I'm having an operation mid-month, and I've been terribly scattered lately, but ideally I'm aiming to finish the flashfics and the ep-related fic, and make some progress on at least one of the longer fics. (In practice, I'll probably start something new and my plate will get even fuller. \o?) Everything is fanfic for Guardian, a super-slashy SF Chinese drama about the police department in Dragon City which deals with supernatural crime. The guy in my icon is the department chief, Zhao Yunlan.
1st: I added 692 words to flashfic #2, which went in an unexpectedly sensitive direction and is definitely going to require some serious beta-age as a result.
Haven't written anything yet today (2nd), but I'm about to knuckle down and try now. Will report back. :-)

Date: 2019-08-02 04:29 am (UTC)I keep hearing a lot about Guardian, and how it's full of remarkably attractive men dancing as close to the line of being totally a couple that the censors will allow.

Date: 2019-08-02 06:52 am (UTC)And ha, yes, that is a highly accurate description. :-)
2nd: 369 words on the second flashfic. Hopefully the end is not too far off. :-)

Date: 2019-08-02 03:49 am (UTC)Today I finished editing and sent out this month's article.
Next up, think of a topic and hopefully a title for the next one to send out Sep 1. Sometimes the next topic pops right in, but I don't have any ideas for this one yet.

I got 300ish words on the TRSB piece, in bits and pieces, but words are words.

Date: 2019-08-02 07:05 am (UTC)I got Back to Creative Writing School via Kindle Unlimited, doing one exercise per day. Yesterday (Aug 1st) it was writing about my nicknames, and I hated it LOL. But still did it.
Today, the assignment was to write two pieces of atmospheric description (200 - 250 words each), evoking dread and peace, respectively. Finished that one already, too.
Now I need to add another 500 words to my writing prompt for

Hopefully, the writer block goes away soon.

Date: 2019-08-02 08:00 am (UTC)Today I noodled a bit, then wrote a little over 500 words of exploratory stuff for another essay (do I learn?). I'm not sure it's going anywhere, but we'll see.

Date: 2019-08-02 09:11 am (UTC)I'm currently travelling, so likely to not check in in time or even daily; I'll resume this when I'm back home. I'm currently also having a lot going on in RL so I'm not focussing on a certain project alone, but am doing anything between editing, writing small scenes or morning pages, nonfic, meta, or even letters of the kind I consider "writing" as they involve a creative and conscious usage of language, which is one of my personal measurements of what to call writing.
A small note on your introduction: usually, we like to point out that there's absolutely no requirement to write daily if people want to join. Even the expectation of this alone puts pressure on some people, and this challenge is supposed to be pressure-free - personally I think this is also the reason why it works so well for most of us. Also, it's absolutely not required to write fiction; meta, nonfic etc. all count - or whatever else people want to claim as their daily writing. :o)

Date: 2019-08-02 02:30 pm (UTC)I went back and edited the introduction to be more explicit about the things you mentioned. More clarity is helpful.

Date: 2019-08-02 01:10 pm (UTC)Anyway, I did write 652 words on a Hawaii Five-0 fanfic that I've allowed to co-opt my writing time instead of finishing second edits on the time travel lesbian romance novel.
ETA: And I'm a dolt! I meant to also say THANK YOU for hosting! I'm looking forward to sharing writing stuff with you. :-)
